J & B Deli Grocery

My FAVORITE breakfast sandwich in New Haven. When friends that have moved away come to visit, it’s a frequent stop!

Fantastic. Stuffed Grape leaves. Fresh Basil mozzarella and tomato. Best baked tofu ever.

J&B Deli grocery recently underwent a renovation last year. The product is a shiny, spanking new deli that maintains its warm buffet of home-​made goods, but with added seating and better lighting. The food they prepare is made fresh daily (I know because I see him in there early in the morning, cooking and prepping in that cramped kitchen behind the check out counter). Typically carries common standard produce — broccoli, peppers, mushrooms, garlic, onions, etc, with some added treats — gouda cheese, eggs, fresh mozzarella, fresh bunches of basil, tasty fresh fruits. Prices are around what you would be paying at Gourmet Heaven or Stop N Shop, but the quality of the produce is much more fresh. They also have an impressive collection of chocolates. Only take credit cards if your purchase is more than $ 10. Hours are typically M-​Saturday, they close around 6pm. Not open on Sundays.

the fruit here is the freshest i’ve ever seen in new haven. the salad bar selection didn’t look that appetizing altho they had kimbap! i’d go back and try that.

Since Shaw’s has closed, J&B is the closest spot for me that’s within walking distance for me to get most of my groceries. You can get fresh veggies and cold cuts here, which is awesome. In a pinch, I usually go there to get things like bananas or potatoes. But, I really like the place because they make their own kimchi and carry a bunch of other Asian-​y type groceries like curry sauces and dumplings. The veggie dumplings that they sell are unbelievable. Really, really good. Definitely a good resource for folks living in the immediate area.

This place is so handy, I wish it were open longer hours.
Nice salad bar, useful selection of groceries, yummy egg and cheese sandwiches. Decent coffee.
Closed by, like, 6 PM. Shucks.
