This is a really great shop and always has everything I need, as well as some specialty items you can’t find at your typical chain craft/art supply stores, I prefer to go to the art supply stores in the New Haven area when I have the chance after class to stock up on a few items and take a look around. The service is wonderful, everyone there is very knowledgable and friendly. I always come out satisfied with my purchases, everything is very good quality and they carry a good range of brand names. They also have a student discount which is very nice. Thank you Hull’s!

Great service, custom framing, and some hilarious and adorably quirky kids items are just part of what makes Hull’s such a local goldmine. My boyfriend and I stopped in while just killing time before dinner and ended up walking out $ 100 lighter. Overall, the store is a bit on the pricey side but they certainly have some good finds. It’s weird to describe the greeting card selection in an art supply store but if you’re looking for a unique, silly card for any occasion, here’s your place. Employees are friendly and the store(from what I’ve learned) runs coupons from time to time so be on the lookout if you’re in the area!

I’ve had several pieces of art framed here, and the staff have been extremely helpful in meeting my budget while still helping to find me options that worked with my taste. I’ve been extremely satisfied with the quality of the frames and when there has been something missed, the staff has fixed it quickly and without a hassle. I would highly recommend them for custom framing.

Before choosing Hull’s for a custom framing project, Unilocal reviewers provided me with enough positive reviews for them to earn my business. I worked with Stewart who clearly went above and beyond to ensure 100% quality assurance. He and his staff were available by phone or email and I couldn’t be happier with the finished product and the price which was very reasonable. I will certainly use them again and highly recommend their services.

Best custom framing in the area. Fantastic customer service: we went in with a certain idea of what we wanted, and the designer listened to us very patiently, showed us exactly that, and then suggested something else as well, which turned out to be even better. Custom framing is pricey, but I agree with Rachel that I wouldn’t try to «save» money elsewhere(I did just that a few months ago and I was very unhappy with the results). Tip: they do run coupons, so be on the lookout. We are very, very happy with Hull’s. Thank you Stuart!

Hull’s has been around forever and everyone seems to know but the best thing about the store to me is they carry supplies architecture people need: chipboard, corrugated cardboard, bass/balsa wood, metal sheets, acetate, modeling materials, etc. Easier than ordering online and right across the street from school of architecture. The store is also for serious artists. My friend was looking for craft supplies and they don’t have much of that. But for a smallish place the paint section is pretty well stocked and(unlike Joanne’s or Michael’s) the employees actually know the products. There’s a ton of brushes and pens – every conceivable. For those with a paper fetish they have an amazing assortment of colors/kinds for painting, printmaking, drawing, crafts(plus that soft Asian lace stuff). The paper selection was the best I’ve seen anywhere, especially for a small store. They have a large variety of frames too. Found an old looking white shabby chic frame, rich cherry wood and cool silver metal poster frame all for 50% off! Schlepped around NYC for deals on frames last summer and could have just gotten them in town. Gah. To sum: I compare Hull’s to Nica’s grocery: Not sprawling with every brand but convenient, cute and covers all the bases. Has the necessary plus certain specialty items you wouldn’t know existed otherwise. Also easy to navigate, the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. Oh and it’s near my favorite coffee shop;)

I had a bunch of custom framing done at Hull’s while I lived in New Haven, and they did a truly EXCELLENT job every time. I can’t recommend them enough. I have since moved to San Francisco, and still haven’t found a framing place as good as Hull’s(which is a little depressing frankly, but that’s another story). For the beautiful job they did, the prices were decent — custom framing is always expensive. And they ALWAYS had the job finished on time, which is more than I can say for most framers. Whoever would’ve thought I’d be nostalgic for Hull’s? Weird.

We’ve had custom and ready-made frames done at Hull’s and we’ve always been impressed. I haven’t had tons of framing done before, so it’s hard for me to say how their prices compare. The service was wonderful. The employees were knowledgeable and friendly(one of the items I wanted framed was related to my wedding, and I was congratulated on my recent marriage by every employee who saw it). They listed the prices of various options, told me clearly what each price point included, and patiently helped me pick out the right combination for me without pushing anything. As a matter of fact, they once discouraged me from buying when I first came in because a big sale was coming up and I could get a much better price if I was willing to wait a few weeks. In addition, I was once sent to another store that carried items that matched my needs better. Honestly, even if I could save a few dollars if I went elsewhere, I wouldn’t. This store is about great service, not about squeezing profit out of every sale. As long as I live anywhere near New Haven, I will get all my framing done here.

Handy. I don’t know if, as per David’s review, EVERYTHING is a little too expensive. My picture hooks and twine were a bargain. I agree about the service, though. Thank you, Hull’s Art Supply! The exact kind of picture hook I needed wasn’t on display. But all I had to do was ask, describe the thing a bit, and the young guy behind the counter took off at top speed into a little room in the back. He beckoned me to follow and there they were. Not only is Hull’s stocked to the brim out front, they do seem to have more stock on hand and they’re knowledgeable about what they have. I’m not a big asker — if I get a bad vibe from a store, or if they seem to have what they have — I’ll probably just wander off. But here, the friendly atmosphere made me comfortable piping up when I didn’t see what I needed. As I mentioned elsewhere, in addition to art supplies, Hull’s has blank books and gift-type things that attract someone like, oh, my little sister. And they have a good reputation for framing. Not to be confused with the somewhat understocked Hull’s Hardware and Hobby. But Hull’s Art Supply and Framing appears to be opening a small framing-only branch on Whitney Ave.

Everything is a little too expensive, but that’s the price you pay for service. I had three large posters framed here, and when the owner discovered I didn’t have a car to transport them he offered to drop them off personally. Having just spent three years in the UK I was too freaked out by his kindness to accept the offer, but that’s quality.
