The only good thing here was the Apple butter and rolls. The wait was ridiculous and the food not worth the wait or the cost. The Hoosier ham and cheddar cheese was heated but the bread wasn’t toasted. The slaw had way to much pepper. Overall I don recommend the place.

So disappointed in our experience. While the waitress was super nice the food was not. We went in for a late lunch and ordered the«big salad bowl». I wish I would have taken a picture. It was iceberg lettuce with 4 small slices of Colby cheese and ham and a little bit of turkey thrown on it for $ 12.75! It was literally the smallest salad I have ever ordered as an entrée. Definitely not worth the price.

Visit Nashville. It is the cutest little town and has so much to see and do! We stopped here for lunch and it was pretty good. I do agree with a prior Unilocal review when they said it was like a local Cracker Barrel. It has a store out front and the menu is pretty similar, though much smaller. We had heard that they are known for their biscuits and apple butter and this was so right. They were so delicious and I honestly could have made those my meal! We all had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, coleslaw and biscuits. It was home cooking and fits with the town. I enjoyed it very much, but it is a good comparison to Cracker Barrel.

Service was not good. No refills at all. Had to go get our own apple butter and straw. Very disappointing. Especially for the price.

Very good dinner. I had roast beef and my wife had fried chicken. Not a fan of the fried biscuits, kind of doughy.

We ended up here for our Thanksgiving meal. we happened upon this place as was glad to see it was open, since we really didn’t want to wait until 3 for the place we made last minute reservations at. They were serving their full lunch and dinner menu, with tons of pie options for desert. They had a turkey dinner, but I opted for the smoked sausage plate, with veggies, potatoes, coleslaw, and fried biscuits(with a side of apple butter). The staff was friendly and was all in good spirits despite having to work on Thanksgiving. In the shop attached they had a wide selection of jams, preserves, and candies.

On Thanksgiving Day this was the only restaurant in town that didn’t require a reservation. The staff was friendly and there was no wait for a table at lunchtime. I opted for a traditional turkey dinner and received a plate that was overflowing with green beans, stuffing, potatoes, turkey, cranberries, gravy, along with a basket of fried biscuits, and apple butter. To top it all off I ordered a slice of pumpkin pie, which arrived warm. It was all delicious and more than satisfied my desire for a country Thanksgiving dinner. We looked at the prices of other Thanksgiving meals in the area and this one was $ 5 – 10 cheaper. Given that it was relatively empty, it must be one of the best kept holiday secrets in Brown County. I definitely plan to stop in again the next time I’m in town.

On a recent trip to Nashville, IN(cute little town, highly recommend it), we were debating on where to go for lunch and settled on Nashville House. Big, big mistake. Could have been the worst place I’ve eaten this year. It is kind of like they tried to be a local version of Cracker Barrel and failed miserably. When we walked up, it wasn’t busy at all, but somehow still took about 5 minutes to get seated. The table had the basic salt, pepper, etc. and then this random dish of apple butter just sitting out in the open. Wonder how long that had been there. And apparently that’s just how they do it. Their menus were extremely basic with few offerings, primarily sandwiches with a couple other items thrown in. After waiting another 5 minutes or so, a server finally came by and took our orders. I ordered the ham and cheese on wheat with fries. They then dropped by a basket of fried biscuits, apparently to dip in that apple butter that had been sitting there since before we arrived. I’ll just put some pre-packaged butter on mine, thank you. They were flavorless and a bit hard. When the meal finally came, mine had the cheese almost all the way off the sandwich, melted, so it was next to impossible to push it back to where it belonged. The bread was too small for the sandwich, making it difficult to eat. The entire sandwich was bland and the fries looked/tasted like they had come straight from a frozen bag. Once we had trudged our way through the meal, we sat and we sat and we sat, waiting for our check. More than 10 minutes later, it finally arrived and we were able to get the heck out of there. I have no idea how this place survives in a town with so many great places to eat, other than suckers like us who unsuspectingly sit down. Save yourself the disappointment.

Had a Sunday lunch here this weekend on a trip to Nashville to see Brown County in the Fall. I was a little torn on whether or not to leave a review because the ones here – both good and bad – all seem to cover the experience pretty well, even though many of those reviews are 5-years-old or older. The place has a really cool atmosphere and the fried biscuits and apple butter are amazing. The fried chicken we had was fantastic. So all the reviews praising those things are true. The staff were definitely not up to a 5-star experience. I didn’t have any bad experiences, but watching the staff I’m inclined to believe most of the bad experiences related in other reviews. And the prices are definitely in the«only do this as a tourist experience» range. The price vs quality ratio here is what you’d expect in a theme park, not a country restaurant. As mentioned by other reviewers, while the specialties are great, much of the food isn’t up to Cracker Barrel standards but is priced twice as high. If you’re looking for a tourist experience for lunch in a neat old building with antique looking wooden furniture and a great Hoosier staple of fried biscuits and apple butter as your appetizer, this place is worth the trip. If you’re just hungry and want some from scratch comfort food, you might be better off at other options or even a chain like Cracker Barrel.

Traditional southern Indiana dishes served in a nostalgic dining room. The turkey and dressing is very good, the fried biscuits and apple butter are amazing, and the coleslaw is a bit different and tasty. Try the sassafras tea!

Food was excellent. The waitress was pretty good but I have a thing about employees throwing fits about how busy they are or that the hostess seated people with no silverware. The customer should not have to hear this.

I don’t know why this place doesn’t have more stars. Most importantly, my meal was amazing, starting with the free biscuits and apple butter. The crust on the fried chicken is unbelievable, and the portion sizes are great. So you get a lot of food for the money. Second, the environment is charming and the little store up front always completes the experience for me. A trip to brown county isn’t complete with a stop at the Nashville House!

I don’t know if I would say it’s cafeteria food, but it’s not much better. The biscuits and fried chicken were actually quite good. The chicken was very moist and the breading was very good. That’s were the good ends. The corn was canned, and the potatoes tasted instant and bland gravy. The prices were ridiculous for what you get. The service was mediocre at best, and for what they charge it should be impeccable.

This place is probably an institution in the Nashville, IN area. Come here and except your American fare with a country twist. The location is right smacked in the cute downtown area where you can find lots of shopping places. Parking can be a little tricky and you may need to walk a few blocks or so but it shouldn’t be bad. On a busy weekend, prepare for a long wait specially for a large party. While waiting, they have a shopping area so you can get more souvenirs and a wide variety of cooking gadgets, country style mixes, etc. Once you’re seated, the ambiance is like going to your grandma’s house in the countryside. It’s warm, cozy, and busy with all the folks eating their heart out. I love that they serve country biscuits before your meal. Gotta carb up before your cholesterol-induced entrees. As for the menu, probably the most popular is their country fried chicken. You can ask for dark or white meat or maybe a bit of both. As a tip, order a half size. The portions are just way too large unless of course you’re that hungry or training for a marathon.

I was extremely disappointed in our experience here this past weekend. I usually do not complain. I ordered the meatloaf and was unable to eat it. After 1 bite I asked my wife to taste it and she had to put her bite in a napkin. She ordered the chicken pot pie which tasted okay but was little more than a bowl of thickened soup. When our waiter came around he never asked if everything was okay. He saw I hadn’t eaten mine and ask if I would like a take home box. I said no I can’t eat it. He just cleared the table and left the check. We had such a good weekend in Nashville only to be so disappointed in out dinner Saturday night. I would not recommend this place at all.

This place should be avoided at all costs. The food is school cafeteria quality for exorbitant prices. $ 17 for dryer than the Sahara desert roast beef, box mashed potatoes and canned green beans? And that was a bargain compared to many of the items on the menu. The cole slaw was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tasted. It was so finely minced that it had the consistency of mush. Absolutely terrible. My wife had the«chopped steak»(a hamburger) and the bun was completely stale. This was a $ 14 item. There are better options in the area. Check out the Pine Room Taven for high quality food at lower prices than this hole.

Tradition… tradition!(in my Fiddler on the roof voice!) This is the quintessential Brown County country cooking place. And 99% of the people come here for one thing… Fried Chicken! I have read and overheard some negative comments towards this place’s prices for their Fried Chicken plate dinners($ 17.95…but I dont thisnk this price has changed in the past 10 years). Now while I agree that this is a little steep for some country cooking, I also understand that this place is NO somewhere I will be eating lunch everyday, Its a destination… part of the Brown County/Nashville experience… so suck it up(or you can pay $ 14.95 for the chicken lunch plate, but it is mostly dark meat… if your feeling that). All dinners served with coleslaw, which is VERY unique to Nashville House. A very lightly seasoned but almost pureed coleslaw with a TON of black pepper. Super good(and you can buy the seasoning packets to make your own at home in their gift shop). You also get corn mashed potatoes and gravy with your meal… these are meh and you will shortly forget they are on your plate once you see your mound of hot crispy chicken!!!) You also get a basket of warm Hoosier Fried biscuits with apple butter. For me, the whole Hoosier Fried biscuit and apple butter thing stars and finishes here. I have not found a better example of this Indiana staple anywhere. The restaurant is more like a hall and can be loud, but it doesn’t matter because as soon as you start crunching into your chicken, all else will drift away.

Yesterday my folks and I went to The Old Nashville House for lunch. We got there sat down and waited 10(Not kidding) minutes for us to even be asked if we needed anything. Me and my dad remember how awesome the biscuits are so we waited(10 minutes) until the server came over and asked her for some. She instantly went from being nice to a total 5 letter word with a capital b. From then on it seemed that EVERYTHING was a(bleep)ing chore for her. I ordered a ham sandwich that seemed to be made of honey baked ham, cheese from the IGA down the road and two pieces of wonder bread(All for the LOWLOW price of $ 12.95). Mom got the same thing and Dad got the three piece chicken dinner. He initially asked for all dark meat. Which seems like a respectable request. She brings it out and it has two pieces of dark and one white. Dad wasn’t mad but asked her if he could have a piece of dark meat as a substitute. The server(who we’ve established is a certain five letter word starting with a capitol b) gave him a look like«Really?!?» and went to the back. When she left I made some minor joking comment to dad about how she was going to pour hot grease on him for making her work extra hard. This is where it gets interesting. The bus boy(who was either a moron or a complete stoner) must have over heard me say it because he told our server. She came back and jokingly said«Oh don’t worry I’m not gonna spill grease on ya.» At that point I had enough I went into«disgruntled diner» mode. She walked away and I asked one of the other bus boys who the manager was. Three guesses… It was our Server… SURPIRSE!!! Yeah. It get’s better. So as I’m walking by the moron bus boy I look over at him and say the following in my best Steven Segall voice. «You need to learn to keep that trap shut or someday someone isn’t going to be as kind as I am.» Then glared. As i was walking away I shared a laugh. Mainly because acting is so much fun!
Anyway, I «cool off» and walk back into the resturaunt. Five letter word server is standing there talking to my father(who is equally unpleased) she goes«Oh yeah I’m the manager for the last 20 years.» to me(I don’t get it. My mind was boggled). So I told her the same thing I said to him. In my quietest calmest voice I said«You need to inform your bus boys to keep their mouths shut.» and I walked away again. I waited outside patiently for my parents to leave. My speech had no effect on the manager so I hope the following statement does. If anyone on the staff of The Old Nashville House is reading this please take heed to what I am about to say. Your manager. The old Five letter word with a capital B one needs to understand that she is SERVING the public. The public does not serve her. The restaurant should probably check their situation. If it’s not the prices it’s DEFINITELYTHESTAFF!!! All of us have been to Nashville on a Saturday afternoon. We know how busy it is. Shouldn’t the restaurant be busy as well? (sigh) Ok I think I’m done. Just a quick recap Crap Staff Prices too high Food is cheaply made. Bottom Line: Lower your prices(or get better quality food) and Teach your staff better manners. Malcak Out!

I don’t care what sort of tradition this place is carrying on or how nostalgic some might be for it, this place is a crazy rip off for the most lackluster food on earth. I was stunned at the prices considering the quality(or lack thereof) of the food. Yes, the deep-fried biscuits are artery-cloggingly delicious, particularly with the addition of their apple butter. The combination tastes like an apple fritter and is maybe worth about $ 3 or $ 4. Unfortunately, that’s not my idea of dinner food and in order to acquire them, you have to spend between $ 18-$ 25 for entrees that are barely worth one-third of that. Barely. The fried chicken is fine and the portion is large, but I’ve been to roadside shacks that serve better and only charge $ 5 instead of $ 20. The ribs($ 22) are tender, but they’re drowning in a barbecue sauce I swear is Open Pit. So, yeah, not even a good sauce. I, unfortunately, ordered the T-bone steak($ 23). Quite frankly, I didn’t want to order anything when I saw the limited selection and outrageous prices, but it was on someone else’s dime(as I would have never chosen this place), so I went for it. Absolutely the blandest, toughest steak I’ve ever had. I only ate about a one-third of the steak and a good portion of that third wound up in unchewable masses in my napkins. That the peas served with it were mushy and grayish and looked as if they’d been cooking for a decade made it even worse. Way to remove all nutrients from the one item with the potential to actually be good for you! And their allegedly famous sassafras tea tasted just like any iced tea, but at least it was reasonably priced. On the plus side, when we complained about the lacking flavor and abundant toughness of the steak, the waitress quickly offered to remove it from our bill. So, yay for considerate service. But the bill with tip still came to more than $ 60 for some halfway decent chicken and ribs. I’d rather go to Cracker Barrel a hundred times for reasonably priced and reasonably tasty country comfort food than visit Nashville House again, and I don’t even like Cracker Barrel. Seriously, the owners of this place should be ashamed that they’re charging what they’re charging for basic home-style country food just because it’s in a Disneyesque area full of tourists. Admittedly, pan– or deep-fried country-style comfort food is by no means high on my list of favorite cuisines, to say the least, but when it’s done right and priced by someone sane, it can be great. Unfortunately, this isn’t that sort of place.
