Soya is fantastic. Sushi is about marriage of simple flavors, especially the rice quality. In my years of being an avid sushi eater, the rice here is some of the best. It clumps nicely and doesn’t fall apart, even with a splash of shoyu. The Chirashi was prepared beautifully and arranged with care — however ordering Omakase isn’t recommended.

I love eating at Soya. The food is fresh and the employees are always nice. Their sushi is better and more authentic than Sticky Rice. If you want some really good food and nice atmosphere go to Soya!!! Try the combination dishes. I usually get chicken and shrimp, it is always delicious. The fried rice is so buttery and tasty. For sushi try the Midlothian crunch or the crunchy shrimp roll. You can’t go wrong with anything you choose from this restaurant.

This place is not good !! The portions are really small and expensive. The rice and sushi rolls don’t have any flavor. Very disappointing! If I could give it 0 stars I would.

The people were all friendly, however — Very pricey for tiny, tiny portions. Never have I spent so much money on so little food. I feel ripped off, and I always know I will be ripped off with most sushi places anyway, but this one went to a whole new level. We had to go to another place to eat there just to feel food. And we even ate some before coming here! No. Tiny portions and way too much money. I don’t even know if the food was good or not because there was so little of it to even taste anything.

My daughter and I went to Soya and had a wonderful experience! The server was friendly and helpful. My daughter, a vegetarian, was so thrilled to have choices! The sushi is very fresh and beautifully made. The miso soup is wonderful and the ginger dress in on the salad was fantastic! My daughter had edamame and yasui(noodles) and loved it so much that she just went and picked up some takeout there! I had a wonderful sushi mix and it was incredibly fresh and tasty! They are a family run business and it shows. They pay attention to detail and are warm and welcoming. I can’t wait to go back! I would have ordered some takeout, too, but my husband was already cooking his best dinner! I will definitely be ordering soon! P. S. — My daughter said it’s just as good as takeout! I highly recommend this restaurant!

The sushi was excellent but the service was horrible. Our sushi arrived to the table before our water and coke and we had to ask for plates and dishes for soy sauce. All of our sushi was spicy and our drinks sat empty the rest of the night, we sat at our table with empty cups and plates for over 20 minutes before we had to ask for our check. We will probably give them one more try but we definitely did not enjoy our first experience.

Me and my wife love to come to Soya for sushi when we are over in the Hull Street area. Service is always great, and its usually quite inside when we go. If you go make sure you try the most awesome sushi roll anyone could ever have… its called«The Playboy roll»…it comes flaming to your table by bicardi 151!!!

Sushi is pretty good. I tried 3 different rolls(kamikaze, California, philly) and the steamed shrimp dumplings. No complaints. I like that they use actual cut fish instead of a «paste» like some places. Decent atmosphere. Prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity. I’d try it again.

So… this is a great place for sushi. Terrific atmosphere. Friendly staff and owners. We get the same thing each time. Edamame, salmon sashimi, volcano roll and Seattle 2 roll. It was presented beautifully as well as Delish! Sometimes I just get the rolls to go without the experience. Well worth the price!

I absolutely love this place. This is the best sushi I have ever had and I travel halfway around the city to get sushi from here.

I would give 4 stars but for the price. Every time I have been there, they have been prompt, helpful, and respectful. Their salads are fresh, their sushi is better than a handful of places(but certainly not the best), their chef is animated, and they have overall good choices. Their hours are funky, I admit, and there have been about 4 or 5 times where they have lost my business because of the strange hours they insist on keeping. Multiply that number by just 10 people, calculate each person to be about $ 25, and you’re losing about $ 250. Multiple that by the number of times I had to turn around and go somewhere else and you’ve lost about $ 1250. Pity.

My boyfriend and I were craving sushi and since we just moved to the Hull Street area we gave Soya a try(on recommendation from friends). When we first arrived we were shocked that the restaurant had not yet opened, we arrived at 12:15 the restaurant opens at 12:30. That seemed strange but there is a Barnes and Noble right there so we came back. When we were seated the waitress(singular– as in there weren’t any others working) said she would be with us in a minute, she moved on to help the other 4 tables that were there and seat another before getting to us. We ordered 1 salad, 2 soups and an order of edamame for starters, then we ordered the Fire Dragon roll and a Spider Roll and an order of Salmon Sushi(2 pieces) Our drinks did not arrive until the salad and soup came out(approx. 10 minutes after ordering). The waitress forgot to put in our order for edamame. she was apologetic, but we were already starting to get annoyed with the whole process. Finally our Sushi came out, the Spider roll had a total of 5 pieces, 5 small pieces and we did not think it was worth the price. The Fire Dragon roll was larger, but we were expecting Spicy as the menu stated it would be. Over all our experience was lacking, we have had better sushi in the Richmond area for less money, better quality and with better service. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. Highly disappointing!

How do you manage to stay in business not opening until 12:30 on a Saturday?!? The lunch crowd starts at 11:30! Boo… I was really in the mood for sushi and was excited about the reviews. Walked in and was told they were closed. Good thing because my feet stuck to the ground. Maybe try mopping the floor.

My husband and I had a sushi craving to kick off our dinner-and-a-movie date we had planned. Lo and behold, as we’re heading to the theater, there’s a tiny out of place sushi restaurant that lures us in. Excellent sushi. We got four rolls because we couldn’t decide between two of them. Probably would have done just fine with three. The staff is overly helpful, but they manage to be cute about it and not annoying. Planning on returning every chance possible!

We tried this place for it’s convenience as we wanted to catch a 7:10PM movie at Commonwealth 20 across the street. Apparently my fellow Unilocalers either caught them on a good day, or they’ve never REALLY had good sushi/sashimi outside of Midlothian. I was stationed on Okinawa for a year, have lived in L.A., near NYC, and travel a ton. Folks, We simply need a better sushi place near Brandermill/Woodlake/Deer Run/etc. The portion for price is out of control, which would be fine if the quality was over the top awesome. You get exactly ½ a cup if that, of seaweed salad for $ 5.95.(??) Most place I’ve been to, and I travel substantially for work, give you a nice cup or so to share for that price. We also tried their«octopus and sea vegetable salad» as another app. Unimpressed now for the same as above AND the quality. We received exactly 3 small slices of octopus, sliced cucumbers, fake crab that you buy in any market, and an overly sweetened dressing… you guessed it… for $ 5.95. Another sticking point, I get that they do not have a full bar, but I like club soda or mineral water w/lime, or any carbonated flavorless drink with my meals, «No we only have water-water.»(??) We had a soft shell crab roll that was meh. We also had a white tuna roll that was very good. We also had 4 different Nigiri: Octopus, Eel, Mackerel, and Salmon Roe roll. The mackerel was not fresh and quite dry. The salmon Roe eggs were not the bright orange you get at other places with the fresh seawater saltiness you’d expect. They were dull in color, a bit away from brown, and flavorless. Don’t think I’ll be returning.
