CASHONLY Fish Corner is a surprisingly nice restaurant in Little Haiti. I was tempted to come by for a long time, after reading an old Miami Herald article written by Sidonie Sawyer. This is a Cuban-styled fish shack — but with a modern ambience with brick walls, clean interiors, and comfortable seats. What was missing is a counter to see the fresh catch — but perhaps they get it from the back since this is not a restaurant with high traffic and turnaround. But then again, we’re still living in a recession. The service was friendly, and they gave me more tartar sauce upon request. Fish was fresh tasting and freshly fried. The veggies were also fresh. The side salad is barebones — typical of a Cuban joint. Cubans just don’t know how to do salads so as long as the salad was fresh, I’m fine with it. The large cafeteria window outside is convenient, but it’s better to go in. Overall, a good fish shack — one I hope to revisit. The hours have since expanded — to 9 pm, I believe. I would call to double check.

Fish Corner is just down the street from my office, so a friend and I popped in for lunch the other day. It’s a bright blue building with red accents located smack-dab in the middle of Little Haiti. They have a walk-up counter(likely big with the breakfast/cafecito crowd)., and a about a half-dozen tables inside. They have a cafeteria-style hot food bar for their daily specials, but also have a rather large menu to choose from. There’s also what looks like a fish counter to the side, but it doesn’t seem to be in use. My friend and I both opted for the fish sandwich(a STEAL at $ 6!), and had a choice of fish(tilapia, snapper, and something else I can’t remember). We both chose the snapper, and within minutes our HUGE sandwiches made an appearance. A single long filet spanned the length of the Cuban bread, topped with lettuce, tomato, and little crunchy fries, with some tartar sauce(or mayo, if that’s your thing) on the side. De-lish! I opted for the combo, but they were out of fries, so we got tostones instead. Also yummy. Overall, Fish Corner is a great place for a cheap, tasty, fresh fish lunch. To let you know how good it is, my friend and I have been talking about our lunch there since we went last Thursday. Then, on our way to lunch today, there was a flyer from Fish Corner on my windshield. Talk about signs. I’ll be a frequent customer, for sure!
