Has gone downhill. Heard it changed owners a while back. It used to be the best Chinese food I’d eaten in Illinois. Egg rolls and crab rangoons are still good though.

I have tried many places in the area and this place I feel is the best chinese food in Mchenry. Their egg rolls are big and delicious, crispy and full. Each item I’ve tried on the menu has been great… and i’ve tried a lot of their food. Honey chicken, bourbon chicken, egg foo young, beef and broccoli, crab rangoons, general tsos chicken, beef chow mein, etc. All good quality food. The value is very good for the money. I test a lot of chinese food on if my kids will eat it, and they LOVE this place! Even the picky eaters!

This used to be the best Chinese restaurant in the area! We would drive from Wisconsin just to have this Chinese food! Not any more. New owners is what I’m hearing. The food is not good anymore. The boneless ribs, general tso chicken, the boneless chicken just to name a few have new recipes. Yuck! If any of the others who noticed and no longer like Chinatown find a place like the old Chinatown let me know because I’m going to be looking for a new place.

USED to be best chinese food in mchenry. Grew up on ONLY going here. Since they changed owners from the woman to who im thinking is her son, he is cutting corners. Have only been there twice(thinking maybe he was just filling in for the day) went back the second time and it was just aweful. They lost a customer of 10 years. Stop cutting corners you’re ruining great food and a great reputation. Only reason I gave 3 stars is to hope for a change.

We have been going to Chinatown ever since they opened, and were always pretty satisfied. Not anymore. They appear to have changed owners, who have apparently decided to cut corners. Steamed dumplings were awful, and everything else ranged from just OK to so-so. If you are going to buy an established business, why change things? Will not go back.

I’m never expecting a spectacular 5-star meal when I order Chinese take-out food. That’s what’s so great about it. China Town in McHenry left me confused. We couldn’t decide between Won Ton or Egg Drop soup so we decided to get the best of both worlds in Won Ton Egg Drop Soup. It was disgusting. I don’t know if they just threw a bunch of egg whites in to make the broth but it was thick, goopy, and tasteless. I ordered Beef Lo Mein because I was in the mood for noodles but there weren’t a ton of noodle options. This was OK but plain. Nothing exciting and not something I would order again. My boyfriend got Sesame Beef which was really delicious if all you’re looking for is flavorful Chinese take-out food. The portion was HUGE too. We also had to try the Pork Egg Rolls and they were amazing too. It’s so hard to decide how to rate it but the disturbing soup is what left an impression on me.

I’ve driven by Chinatown several times in the past but only just went in here tonight. There was a constant hum from the kitchen as 6+ people prepared take-out orders for the customers coming in and out. The large take-your-own-condiments area was also quite impressive. I ordered Crab Rangoons, Pork Eggrolls, Beef Chow Mein(for the aunt), and General Tso’s Chicken. The Crab Rangoons and Eggrolls were good. I was thinking the Chicken was alright– nothing to write home about — UNTIL I ended up with a piece of what seemed like Saran Wrap plastic in my mouth. Uhh…grosss. I did call the restaurant, who apologized and asked if I wanted them to make me a new one(No, thanks. I’ve pretty much lost my appetite). Shortly after getting off the phone, I tried to force down the rest of the food on my plate… and then bit into something hard: seemingly a piece of bone. Really? My appetite is now TOTALLY gone, and the leftovers are going into the trash. For a $ 9.50 take-out entrée, I’d expect fewer foreign objects in my food.

I have been here 4 times and the food is the best offering in the McHenry area for fastfood chinese. You can’t really compare Plum Garden with this restaurant since this is fastfood not a seatdown restaurant with ambiance. My go to menu item is always kung pao chicken and it is a good measuring item for any chinese restaurant IMHO. The food is good and fresh. My only issue I have is the amount of rice they give you with the lunch specials, it’s not enough. This is my fastfood chinese choice in McHenry. Value is very good.

I must agree with Zachary! This place is awesome! All we order is the BBQ pork with yellow rice. 6 tubs to-go lasts about a week in my home. We freeze dry them and bring them back to Cali. Have been eating here since 1997 and it is still the same. The lady who runs the show always remembers us and I think she is permanently pregnant but she still hustles!

The best, most wholesome, freshest, and most delicious chinese food in the area. Friendly owners, large portions, no MSG, special requests are happily accomodated(if you want something they don’t serve, they may work out how to make it, test it out as a special, and possibly even add it to the menu in time). Mostly takeout, but dine-in is available in simple, semi-self-serve style storefront room.
