Excellent food, very good salads and pizza. I recommend the fajita salad which comes with a very tender and juicy flank steak. The blue onion pizza serves up carmelized onion pizza which is tasty. So good we came back here twice in a three day stay especially if you are looking for something non hispanic cuisine in the area

The hummus was wonderful. I ate a salad which was a generous portion. This was a great little spot to come eat. The service was quick & friendly.

The Pizza is fantastic best I’ve had in a while. Do yourself a favor and go here you won’t be disappointed. Oh and they have beer

The blue onion has been in McAllen for a long time now and it has a good clientele base. I think it really benefits from being different from your typical valley lunch spot, but if you are comparing it to options in other cities it falls short. What are the positives? It’s different. They have a menu unlike any other in the area, fresh Mediterranean style salads and sandwiches. The prices are fine. The service is friendly and the ARTICHOKEDIPISAMAZING! Seriously the artichoke dip is hands down the best thing here and alone worth eating here. Alright the negative: the food isn’t impressive, it’s just sort of ok. The pizzas are not impressive: kind of like a cracker with some toppings. The sandwiches are just ok. The chicken is just ok. I thought the flat bread was store bought, but I was told they bake it fresh(I couldn’t tell, it doesn’t seem any better than a package). Also it always seems smoky inside like it needs better ventilation. Bottom line is that I wouldn’t suggest this place, but if someone wants to go there I’m happy to go eat artichoke dip.

My go-to restaurant for lunch, sometimes it gets packed but service is fast yet the food remains great. They have really good lunch specials, I always get the salad with balsamic vinaigrette(with no flower seeds) and half a sandwich. Tip: Roasted red pepper sauce, hummus, and artichoke heart dip are great as an appetizer. They all come with pita bread.

I don’t like Hummus, but I love it at Blue Onion. Goat cheese? Usually not, but the Blue Onion makes it work great. Artichoke dip… Forget about that stuff they microwave at Applebee’s. Blue Onion has the real thing. My advice is to try a sampler of those three great tastes. Then, even though you really won’t be hungry anymore, eat a San Franciscan pizza.

Really good and reasonable prices. Only ordered their salads. Had the fajita steak which gave plenty of meat and lots of veggies. Served with a side of pita bread on the side but thankfully I only ate one(watching my carbs) also had the grilled chicken. Didn’t try the chicken but looked delicious! :)

Loved this place! I’m visiting from Houston and honestly the ambiance reminded me of restaurants in the Houston Uptown area. Food was great! Dips were great tasting(hummus, artichoke dip and goat cheese) and the pizza had a great mixtures of flavors. Especially loved the music

Much potential here. Friendly wait staff, great jazz but my meal was missing something. Everything was fresh and prepared right there but meh… $ 19 for an iced tea, dinner salad and a small cheese pizza with mushrooms.

Great service and the food is delicious. They have several vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes in the menu which is rare for a restaurant in the RGV. The mushroom wraps and gyros are the best.

Wow! What a refreshing break from the fried food bonanza that is the Rio Grande Valley. I had a fantastic lunch here today. This Mediterranean-influenced menu will leave you full but not stuffed, and the single best reason to come here is their heavenly flatbread. Chewy, warm, fresh and thick — it absolutely made my chicken pesto wrap. I enjoyed friendly service despite coming at a busy lunch hour. But the food was worth the wait, and I only wish I’d gotten some flatbread to go!

I was stuck in McAllen for work and didn’t want to go to a chain. So many of them had absolutely miserable ratings on Unilocal, which I trust almost to a fault. So I looked for somewhere with decent ratings and came across the Blue Onion. The food was incredible, the service was fantastic. A decent selection of local IPAs, too. And I don’t even like onions. Will definitely visit again next time I’m in town.

I was really disappointed, especially after seeing so many great reviews here. We went on a Sunday, and the place only had about 4 tables with people and a few at the bar. We had to flag down our waiter. He never refilled our drinks, and didn’t come ONCE to check after he brought our food to see if we were okay. The food is okay, if you don’t really know anything about Mediterranean cuisine and want to settle for something other than Mexican, yet the service was horrible. All in all, we were never brought our check, so we had to get it ourselves. The girl who printed it out was very sweet, but she handed the check to us without a pen. Simple confusion, but she seemed distracted… JUSTLIKEEVERYONEELSE. At that point, I knew I was never coming back. Maybe they just had a bad day?

First of all, I can’t believe I have never eaten here considering that I am a McAllen native. Secondly, this was a really nice surprise. This location has a nice little atmosphere, nothing too fancy, just simple but elegant. It feels different from other McAllen eateries. Tired of eating nothing but Mexican food, we stumbled across the Blue Onion and my fiancée and I were really surprised with the food. It is very fresh(the flatbreads tasted freshly baked) with really nice ingredients standing out. Simple but very well made food. The meats in our dishes were delish! We both had meats wrapped in flatbread and both were winners. Try the flatbread appetizer-the goat cheese and roasted garlic are sooo good! Go to Blue Onion for something a little different in McAllen!

This place is awesome! I’m not really into this type of food(wraps/pizzas/salads) but if you are, this place is a «must try»! The flat bread is awesome. The soup I had was like this beef stew(Friday special). It was the best french onion soup I ever had! Yes is was both a french onion soup and a beef stew. The waitress said that the most popular dishes are the al pastor and the gyro wrap. I tried the gyro and it was off the chain. Had semi raw onions In it. Non onion eaters beware. Prices were fair. About $ 10 a wrap dish. Came with cole slaw, bean salad, and a cucumber dressing in side.

This place is located in a freestanding building in a shopping center. It was freezing in there, so beware and take a jacket. There is a nice variety of pizza, flat breads, salads, and items you can get as a sandwich or a wrap. My coworker and I each ordered a wrap. I got the portobello and garlic wrap with tomato, lettuce, and a chipotle mayo and she got the fajita pastor wrap with salsa. They both came on freshly made flatbread with a side of black bean salad and a side of vinegar coleslaw. The food was very good. The mayo was very light and I almost didn’t realize that it was there. The plates were large and neither of us was able to finish our meals. It was tasty and someplace I would recommend to someone in the area. The only issue was parking. It’s in a busy shopping center, so parking was an issue.

You had me at thin crust and«mini pizza»(like the size of a dessert plate). So salad and mini-pizza was the perfect lunch portion for me. I ordered the San Franciscan as I always love a good sausage, roasted garlic and fresh basil on my pizza and this particular one had it all… Menu is well varied with pizzas, calzones, flatbreads and dips. Mention that it’s your first time, and you may get a free dessert… I did ! Btw, Sally, my waitstaff was one of the best… she is a role model for customer service!
