Onyx Bar & Grill

The place looks run down. Drinks are weak. They should only serve beer because the bartenders cannot mix a drink properly. Despite how little customers there were in there it took forever to get the drinks made and served. I would not go back there and would not recommend it to my friends. If i could make one recommendation that would be go out of business.

Stopped in for dinner tonight. My DH and I had draft beer from the wide selection and my son has a kiddie cocktail. For dinner I had the seared blackened ahai tuna salad, DH had the build your own chicken sandwich, and son had the kids cheeseburger. Food arrived quickly and tasted good. Everybody cleaned their plates. Decided to try the Moscow Mule drink special and ordered onion rings off the appetizer menu to go with it. Both were fantastic! Good service, nice and clean, friendly staff.

Just came from this place and the service was fantastic! The lady serving was super nice and helpful! Food was pretty good. Didn’t win anything on slots but I’m okay with that. Probably going back!

Sat at the bar bartender ignored us because she was to busy chatting with a group of her friends instead of serving us. Moved to a table made eye contact with multiple severs but ignored us also. They weren’t busy they were just standing by the waitress area gossiping to each other. Left after 15 – 20 min after not getting asked if we wanted anything. Bouncer seemed to be the only one doing his job.

First off this place is just a bar with typical bar food.
If you are looking for just a place to have a beer or 2 then this place will fill that need just fine. If you are looking for ANYTHING mixed, then forget about it.
I literally even asked the bartender what her best drink was and she said «I am not very good at mixing drinks, I will try but can’t promise anything.» I tried anyways and she was right, it sucked.
I then came back another time with a different bar tender and asked the same question and she goes «Ehhhh I make an ok Rum and Coke but even that is shaky at times.» I decided against a mixed drink this time because I knew what I would be in store for.
As far as the place itself its a pretty decent place, they have the tvs all around the front and have gaming in the back. I have never found the atmosphere to be bad either, I have never seen a fight in this place, granted I don’t stay til 2AM either but I have been here a lot as its really close to my home.
All in all it’s a bar, good environment, stick to beer and you’ll be fine.

About an average sports bar in an average town. The place is in an average same looking strip mall but at least they have an above average eye-​candy staff. The place looks pretty decent and a real good layout for a attached strip mall bar but the menu is non-​existent and they would be better off just selling beer. there is like very little in their menu and goig for lunch seems impractical. a good place for a cheap brew though.

This is our second time to visit the restaurant. This time we brought my parents. The food is great! We had the burgers and my parents had Rueben sandwiches. We feel they have the best burgers in Rockford area! Everyone loved the food. Server did a great job too!

After visiting my parents’ house, the boyfriend and I needed some food before hitting the road back home. Apparently, everything closes early on Sunday with your only option being Mc’D. However, I was not in the mood for fast food and really wanted wings. I remember passing by this place a few times, but never took the time to check it out. We came in and found a table immediately. It was past 9:30p on a Sunday so getting a waitress ASAP was no issue. The bar its self is a standard Machesney Park/​Loves Park bar.
Their specials did look pretty good and priced nicely. The boyfriend and I settled for wings. They’re only 50 cents on Sundays too. haaayy! We were thinking they would be small so we decided to order a lot. Our wings came to our table and were huge! We got BBQ, buffalo, lemon pepper and garlic parmesan. To our surprise the wings were actually pretty damn good! They were fresh, tasty, huge, and cheap. Needless to say we finished most of them.
We didn’t order drinks since we had to drive back home to Chicago. However, next time I am in town I will make sure to swing by this place.

Regular pub grub nothing spectacular. I always get a burger and it is always good. Service is fast but it is almost always empty when I am there.

Why is there lettuce under my wings? If u wanna give the illusion of wings being healthy, give me carrots and celery like it’s 1999.

Normally enjoy the food and drink specials. Ordered good for delivery today and was very disappointed. Chicken wings were luke warm at best and overcooked/​dry as can be. My wife’s burger was chewy and full of gristle. Daughters Mac and cheese was coated with a ridiculous amount of pepper. I will never order from there again

The wings here are great and only .49 on Sunday. I’ve only been here a few times but everytime the bartenders have been over the top nice and made sure to engage in conversation they’re all cute too. The manager is also over the top cool and eager to please; you can tell he really cares about this place and wants it to do well.
If you’re in to NASCAR this is the place to watch it. Food specials, drink specials lots of tvs and they got the sound cranked up.
They also have punch cards and if you fill two of them up you get a personalized mug.

Great food, friendly servers and nice seating.
I really like the specials they have and how everything is displayed. When a server comes over to me and I have to ask what the specials are, then memorize what they said and pick something… that can be a downer. I like how all their specials for each day of the week is on a big banner over the bar so there’s no questioning what is what. The drinks are responsibly priced.
Sometimes it’s nice sitting out on the deck after work on a hot summer day. I would definitely recommend this place to friends.
The staff is beyond friendly and reasonable.

One of my favorite bars in the area! Always a good atmosphere. Some nights they play music videos to songs playing which I love and others are sports games. Servers are always nice and attentive. My favorite spot is the bar but when meeting more than one person we always get a table or sit on the nicely done patio area weather permitting. Always an excellent night out

Tried out Onyx on Monday night, and was disappointed with the experience.
The night started off well enough with me arriving a bit earlier than my dinner group, and was immediately waited upon when I sat down at the bar to wait. When my friends arrived, we were immediately seated. It was a REALLY cold night, so we pretty much had the pick of tables… but I really appreciated the fact that the guy (I’m guessing the manager?) was easygoing enough to let us choose where we wanted to sit, helped to pull together tables so we could be more comfortable (with our group of 8), and then was more than willing to change the channel to the college basketball game that we wanted to watch.
Unfortunately, it started to go downhill as we started to order our dinners. Here’s the play-​by-​play:
For appetizers, we ordered:
— Calamari — which they were out of
— Variety of wings — honey bourbon (which were apparently very good, but that I didn’t try), Cajun (which lacked any kind of real seasoning, and tasted primarily of… grease), and mild buffalo (which had no kick… and unfortunately no real taste to them either)
— Mozzarella sticks — average… but the «tangy marinara sauce» lacked flavor
— Fried dill pickles — wanted to like these… really, I did… but they were overly-​breaded, and it tasted like they were using old oil.
For dinner, I ordered the pork tender sandwich, which I split with someone who had ordered the Italian beef. The Italian beef, although a bit dry was hands down the winner of the two sandwiches. While it wasn’t the most flavorful of sandwiches (even after dipping in the au jus), it was waaaaaay better than the pork tender sandwich. If I were a betting man, I’d put a large sum of money on a bet that this sandwich is purchased frozen, warmed up in a microwave, then thrown in the oil to try to crisp it up. What was achieved, unfortunately, was a really bad sandwich.
The highlights from the rest of the group:
— The grilled chicken sandwich was dry, lacking flavor
— The buffalo chicken sandwich was pretty good
— The burgers (can’t remember which ones were tried) were pretty decent
— The panini looked… underwhelming
— The full rack of ribs looked incredibly small, and the ends were a bit overdone and tough, but the middle section of ribs were pretty good
May seem a bit harsh to give this place a 2 star rating, especially given that the service was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, the meal was so underwhelming… and just plain bad (for a large part of our group) that the service wasn’t enough to move this up to a 3 star rating for our group.
Would I be back? Maybe to watch a game and grab a beer… and possibly some of those bourbon wings that smelled quite good. But for dinner? Doubtful.

Your typical sports bar n grill! Place is very clean and our waitress was very friendly and helpful. We fully enjoyed the Wednesday night special, all you can eat crab legs!
I was impressed how quick we were taken care of as the crab legs kept coming! They were great!

Checked out Onyx over the weekend for lunch. Nice space, plenty of seating, decent menu and lots of TV’s.
Food — typical bar food. I had the steak wrap and it was fine but it was loaded with bleu cheese, kinda overloaded to the point where it was over powering. The walleye sandwich was excellent.
Looked like they had good weekly specials, will have to come back on a Monday night for wings.
Our waitress was sorta flighty, it started to get busy and it just seemed like she was a bit overwhelmed.
Over all… tucked away in the back of a strip mall so plenty of parking. Definitely will check it out again.

I went to Onyx 6÷16÷12 and I have to say that I was not impressed. I personally enjoyed when the space was Olive. The food, drinks, and atmosphere was better.
The majority of seating indoors is high bar stools and tables which proves difficult if you have back and or knee issues. In the back there are a few (possibly 6) tables that are lower but were snagged already by older women. I had a Patty Melt there which 1. was quite rare on the inside instead of the medium well I asked for. 2. I ate anyways and regretted that decision not terribly long after leaving as I was needing a bathroom asap. 3. Unfortunately the most flavor of the whole burger and fries came from the bread and ketchup i used.
Sadly the atmosphere, poor food, poor service, and waitress that was not very helpful/​knowledgeable about the menu just made the whole experience terrible.
This may be a good place if you like bartop tables, somewhat pricey food for what you get especially without much flavor, and a sports bar near 251 and 173. I personally have had better food, service, and atmosphere at other smaller local sports bars/​pubs in the area.

Onyx is nestled away in the side of a strip mall. It is a top end Bar for the Rockford area with very nice décor and TV’s…It also has a very nice patio on those nice days. They have daily drink and food specials… so check them out.

The girls at Onyx are very friendly… I’ve never got a wrong drink or mistake on my food. Have to say thats a Plus for me…

I’ve had several of the Burgers. All amazing! Make sure to get some spicy ranch for the frys. I have also try’d the wings. They are Big and the best I’ve had in town. I used to be a fan of the Page, but I found a new home.

Hey, Not everything can be 5 stars all the time… I feel the Wings, eventho excellent are a bit pricey when you dont have the deal.

This place is great! Loved the food and the atmosphere. You can’t go wrong here. It was much better than I had expected & the food came quick!
