What is there not to say about Gilbert’s bar and grill? Place is simply amazing! World class Chinese food on the weekends and great lunch specials during the week. Matt the owner is a joy to visit with and a beacon of positivity. He runs a catering company in his free time and can literally cook anything you want. Definitely worth checking out!

Love Gilbert’s catering, so I thought I would try the restaurant out. Well, they do have some of the best fried pickles in town. And the other food was good. Waitress was nice and we had good service. But dirty tables everyone I looked. There were more dirty tables than occupied tables. When we arrived we were told to sit where ever we liked… well, kinda hard to find a clean table that wasn’t surrounded by tables with dirty dishes. I hate having to see dirty dishes while I try to enjoy my dinner… I think all agree on that. The staff was lingering around and then even ate dinner at the bar while we ate dinner. Didn’t bother me too much except I wish they had bussed the dirty tables before taking their dinner break. Had high hopes for this restaurant but they need new staff that cares about their job. This place used to be a popular spot. And has potential to be again. Maybe the manager/owner will take some advice from these Unilocal reviews…

I read all the reviews on how great Saturday Chinese was, a group of us went and I wasn’t impressed. It was a variety of mishaps through out the night right down to some really large gross piece of foreign object floating in the beer on tap. Switch to bottles. Not much of selection on wines, after we asked what to you have, to order from there to being told, sorry we are out of that. Bringing out the wrong beer later, etc. The wait staff was very nice and somewhat attentive but I personally don’t think they had enough staff for the busy place. As far as food goes, it was nice that you didn’t have to worry about what to order, just get surprised but I noticed that most of the dishes all had the same sauce on them. I didn’t like the shrimp at the end, it was breaded, soggy and the heavy brown sauce over powered it. Ribs were really good, the beef & broccoli was good. The people with me even commented on the way home that it was only so so, not as good as it used to be.

This restaurant was very dirty and service was less than desirable. There were only three other tables in the restaurant and the server did not have good time management skills. If you want to wait awhile for your drinks and to order, then this is your place. The food came out cold and you don’t get much food for the price. Overall, you will be very disappointed with this restaurant and I highly discourage this place.

This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. We came to Gilbert’s with high hopes and were very let down. The fact that your supposed to have a reservation is hilarious. The wait staff was extremely rude, and there was hair on my plate. The chicken wasn’t even cooked all the way through. Yikes. I don’t understand how this place gets any business. Absolutely disgusting.

Gilbert’s is a locally owned restaurant that provides numerous options on American food. The real ticket to enjoying Gilbert’s is their lunch specials which are provided Mon-Fri. During college my friends and I would eat here every Wednesday for the delicious Teriyaki steak, baked potato, and salad. The lunch specials are all great and are reasonably priced for the large amount of food you get. If you’re a Texas Tech student looking for a good American meal and quiet place to have lunch, this is the place to go. The only flaw is the small staff which sometimes fall behind on days when the lunch crowd is much larger than normal. However, the owner is always quick to emerge and wait on customers himself and make sure they are all satisfied.

Average American food with some fancy surprises. Overall, there are better places for this fare! I tried Gilbert’s a couple months after they updated the outside of the building with a new sign & logo. Unfortunately, the inside of the building does not reflect the outside updates. The table and upholstered chairs are older and did not look well-kept, same as the rest of the bar. The inside seemed kinda dingy and bar-like, making no bit of Gilbert’s style(both food and décor) follow a common or understood theme. The food was too expensive for the portion and flavor. The shrimp and the chicken sandwich were both all-around average, but nothing stellar, and did not stand out as something worthy of getting again. My food came out lukewarm, but the service didn’t allow me to have it addressed in a timely manner. The restaurant has a gritty bar feel to it and was average. I had high hopes for Gilbert’s, so I do hope it improves!

I had always heard about Gilberts and never tried it up until they started catering for my workplace a few times a year. BESTCHICKENFRY in town! Love their food! Great for catering!

I have not been impressed by this place regardless of how many chances I have given it. It honestly deserves three stars for the food but the staff treated me and my wife as a chore when we were in there last and they deserve to loose a star for that.

The service was horrible we made reservations 2 days in advance for 8′ o clock, 8:45 im still waiting for my table, so here it is 9:00 still no table so we leave, no hostess was at the front and people that got there 20 minutes after i did got a table before i did. I have been coming to this place for years but im so disappointed i dont know if I’ll be back. Oh it also took me 20 minutes to get a drink from the bar, the worst service I have ever seen at any restaurant. Gilbert get your sh*t together or you will be out of business soon.

Absolutely the worst restaurant I’ve been in Lubbock. I have no idea who is reviewing this place, but we went to the Chinese Dinner on the day that is the special and was terrible. The pork rib was pretty good, but after that it was aweful. The beef flavor wasn’t good and it was cooked poorly, the chicken was barely edible, and the worst was the shrimp, which tasted like catfish. There are way better restaurants and with better service in Lubbock.

This is my most favorite steak in town! Hands down the best little restaurant. Furthermore, the catered food to events like wedding and parties etc is the same quality you find in the restaurant. It’s a great place for a date or the whole family!

Sooo good! Everything was homemade and exceeded expectations. There was one waiter and the place was packed, but he never forgot a single thing and did a spectacular job. If anyone complained about the service that night, they are impatient and have no soul. If he’d only had 2 tables, the wait would have been outrageous, but the poor guy had the entire place and only one cook cooking in the back. I will be back! It has a cool hole in the wall atmosphere and I loved the food.

Our family went on a Saturday during a recent visit to Tech and it was great! They only serve it on Saturdays, and we were thankful to have gone on that night. Great food, large portions and great service!

All the Sriracha in the world wouldn’t save the Chinese food here. Service provided by a dude in a sweatshirt. Might as well be a buffet.

This was my first visit to Gilbert’s for the Chinese night(Saturdays) after hearing much about it. I was told I needed to make reservations but after arriving it was obvious that reservations are pointless, you can make them if you’re feeling like following the rules, but they didn’t even ask our name when greeted so, no need. After they took our drink orders we waited 20 min kinda confused how it worked. After 25 minutes the first plate of ribs/spring rolls came and HOLYCOW, the food doesn’t stop! Lots of food and although not the best Chinese ever, it’s still really good. Give it a shot, it’s locally owned and afterwards go next door to Gatsbys for some good coffee!

In don’t think Gilbert owns this place anymore. Ate there on Saturday evening for the Chinese food… that’s really the only reason this joint made it as long as it has. the Chinese. Anyway, at one time you had to have reservations days in advance and we just called at 6pm on Saturday and got a table. The food was decent but nowhere near as good as Gilbert’s used to be. Gilbert or no Gilbert, sadly this place had lost a step or two.

I called to make reservations for a dinner party of 6 as a trial-run before booking our rehearsal dinner here. Spoke to the owner/manager Matt and he was very polite, informative, and answered all of my questions. I’ll update my review after we dine there next Friday but so far my first impression is great! :)

I would not recommend this place to anyone. Their chicken strips are mostly batter. Their fries are over salted. They ran out of lemonade and chicken fried steak. All of this on a Friday at 7pm.

One word: awesome. When ordering my salad I told the waiter I couldn’t decide between the spicy vegetable soup and the house peppercorn ranch salad. The waiter said whichever i ordered he would replace it with the other if I wasn’t satisfied. I ordered the soup and it was among the best I’ve ever had. Towards the end of the meal, the manager came by and asked how my soup was. He was happy to hear I liked it, but then I realized he was baiting me because he then handed me a take out container of the house salad dressing. This stuff is crazy good! I ordered the cajun ribeye which was good but not great. I prefer my cajun food to be extremely spicy and this wasn’t spicy enough. It was a good steak but I wish I had ordered a filet. As a plus, the bread was great and the drinks our table ordered were carefully made and did not disappoint. Gilbert’s is worth finding, it’s not hidden but it is easily overlooked… and remember the peppercorn ranch.
