We found this place by chance. You would not know its there since its tucked back in a place with a tiny store front! We were pleasantly surprised! When we arrived ppl were just starting to come in for dinner. I had a heaven roll which was very good and fresh. There are a lot of good choices and a good variety!

I ordered take out on a weekday night for 2 rolls. I just felt like getting some sushi and it’s close to where I live so I thought why not try this place out. I’ve seen it many times on the way back home, but I never tried it out so I thought why not. So over the phone they told me it was going to take 20 minutes. I got there in about 30 minutes and they told me that they’re working on my order. Offered me a free drink while I waited, which I thought was a very nice gesture. So I sat near the sushi bar and noticed that they haven’t even started to work on my order. I waited an extra 10 – 15 minutes while I was there for them to make my two rolls. I was a little annoyed because they told me 20 minutes.

Found this little gem down the street from my hotel and will be coming back a lot while in town. Everything was delicious, clean, and perfectly displayed. Thank you for the great experience.

This was our first time here and everything was SO delicious !! We started with the spicy crab crackers which are amazing, I’d recommend anything with spicy crab then I got the spicy pork and he got the red Bull sushi roll. So many creative sushi rolls! And everyone we saw got a complimentary cucumbers salad which of course was SOO good! Our waitress was so sweet and attentive. DEFINITELY going back!

In my opinion, Tokyo has the best sushi in Louisville! The rock and roll and VIP rolls are my favorite but I’m sure you can’t go wrong with anything. Reasonably priced and friendly service. Always very happy with my experience here!

Visited this place for the first time today. Portions were very large, had sushi, soup, fried rice and ceviche. One roll will fill you up if your a normal size girl very filling! Family owned

Tokyo conyinues to be our sushi home. We travel extensively six months a year all over America and Europe. No place like here. The family is most gracious and will accommodate anyone’s palate — just ask.

Went here tonight. Food was good, but absolutely hands down the worst waitress I have ever had anywhere. Ever. She messed our order up time and time again. When we complained to her it wasn’t right, she got very rude and literally laughed at us and walked off. We had to flag her back and asked when our correct order was coming out. She tried to get us to «just take» it the way it was incorrectly made. When we refused, she huffed and left. What had to be 20 – 30 minutes later, we overheard her put the correct order in. I asked her«Did you just now put our correct order in? Just now?» She laughed and said she«must’ve gotten confused or something.» It was literally one sushi roll, that we ordered originally, and 5 – 6 additional times. It started as not a big deal, but her continued rudeness, arguing with us, and completely flippant attitude got old very quick. Then the order, this rare-impossible-elusive-complicated-confusing sushi roll, comes to the table, made wrong. I pointed it out to her, and she made an excuse and walked off. No correction made. Then she tells us she took it off. Bill comes, and it wasn’t removed. We complain and she tells us her manager won’t let her take it off. We request the manager. He agrees to remove the roll. We get a new bill, and the roll is removed, but the total cost never changed. We address it with him and he says«why does it matter?» We explain that they tried to fool us by removing the item but altering the price so we still got charged. We ask for the last receipt to show him and he says they no longer have it. He then asks«what can you afford» with a smart tone. We had to tell him to take the roll off so we could leave. He ultimately does. Then the table beside us tells us they never got half their food, had the same problems, and when one of the children asked if their food was coming the waitress told her(who was about 7 – 8 years old) that she was rude. I will never return business here, needless to say.

Really good sushi — fantastic by Louisville standards — and a lot of other tasty Japanese food too. Don’t let the unassuming outside appearance fool you. This is worth a visit by any Asian food fan.

I don’t even like sushi very much, I *never* order it anywhere except Tokyo! Lest that deter you from taking my advice, my girlfriend loves sushi and Tokyo is also her favorite in the city. I usually get the volcano roll, while she loves the sunset roll. The chicken katsu is also amazing, as is their fried rice. To top it off, the service is wonderful. If you like Japanese food, Tokyo is Louisville’s best kept secret.

I was dismayed yesterday to hear that my favorite sushi place was closing. Luckily I had plans to try a new place. And Tokyo Japanese Restaurant did NOT disappoint. Lets get the cons out of the way quickly: — It IS in fact actually open. Not much to look at from the outside. We were worried that they were actually no longer in business based on the looks from the outside. The place next door is out of business and Tokyo doesn’t really have much curb appeal. — It felt a bit pricey based on it’s location and visibility. — Super way out of my way. But now lets get to the pros!: — Free cucumber salad brought to us to start. I’m not a big fan of cucumber, but it wasn’t bad(so if you *like* cucumber, it is probably great!) — Edamame starter is HUGE. Meant for 4 people… waaaay too much for our duo. Still, good! — So many options! Variety is the spice of life! I got a traditional roll(Crunch Munch… one I *know* I like) and one of their specialty rolls(Playgirl Roll… to try something new). Both were fantastic! — Service was attentive, but not on top of us. It probably helped that there were only 3 or 4 groups total the entire time we were there. But still… I like that. — They have plum wine. It’s like liquid candy. I love plum wine. A fantastic meal! If you are willing to drive a bit of a ways for delicious sushi, I highly recommend it!

I really like their sushi — they put their own nice spin on it and it is good stuff. I love the guys that own/work here. They are great! Super helpful and welcome you in to eat even if you are arriving a bit late. Today there were some snotty business men(yes, I heard your guffaws about your wives and women in general and I can’t believe your bigoted a$$es are still married) that were definitely taking advantage of the owners hospitality. But you know what? The owner was his ever gracious and precious self. He is definitely the kind of man you want to know!!! I have had fried rice, Udon soup, and sushi here. I will stick with the sushi. They do a good job with it!

After searching for a good sushi place, we decided to try Tokyo. My first impression was, «Oh, this is it?» It is a very small storefront in an out-of-the way area. We were greeted immediately and asked to sit anywhere. There were two waiters and two sushi chefs at the bar. They were in no way busy, which I thought was odd for a Saturday evening. Our waiter took our drink orders and shrimp tempura appetizer order and the order was out before we had decided on what rolls to order. We ordered a Temptation, Dragon, Rainbow, Tiger, and Butterfly. All were amazing! I’m not into the raw sushi as much, and the menu was very easy to follow with completely raw, fully cooked, and deep fried rolls on separate pages. It took a while to get our rolls, but a large take out order was before us. They brought us one wrong roll, but fixed it promptly. I did have a ginger salad as well. It was ok. Good flavor in the dressing, but WAY too much dressing. I’d ask for it on the side next time. I know this is small, but I was very happy that they have metal chopsticks instead of the cheap wooden ones! If I based my rating on food alone, I would have given them a 5. However, the only atmosphere is 2 TVs above the bar with sports. No artwork. No music. If you are looking for atmosphere, you won’t find it here. Also, the bar is closed. I’m not sure what happened, but they aren’t serving any alcohol and they don’t know when/if they will start again. No sake, Sapporo, or plum wine with sushi here :(

Went there for a quick meal after work. My mom got the chicken hibachi style dinner(as she doesn’t like sushi), and I got 2 sushi rolls. Both were good. Nothing too fabulous but they were spot on. Lots of sushi options. Don’t waste your money on the miso soup though.

Nice little sushi spot. Don’t have all the crazy rolls like Saki Blue, but good quality fish and ingredients. Definitely recommend!

I used to be a regular of Tokyo, but after a disappointing experience some years ago, I decided to avoid them. We were in the area recently and after being underwhelmed by the sandwich store next door, decided to give them another chance. To our surprise, the folks working there were not the Asian folks I remembered, but a bunch of Mexicans/Central Americans. We decided to stick around and give it a shot, and I’m glad I did. We started with an appetiser of Tempura Shrimp. Under the previous régime, you got a couple of shrimp and a bunch of battered, fried vegetables, but they offered four shrimp. Plus points for that. Then the main course arrived — Caterpillar and Spider Roll. Tast could have been better, but they were very good and well-presented. The waiter, who looked Mayan, was excellent. Total bill came to about $ 30 including tip, which ain’t bad for a sushi lunch for two. We shall return.

Went at 1:30 so it was slow and easy to get excellent service. The staff was very friendly & food was so so so so SO good. I’m a simpleton when it comes to food, but also a chicken fried rice connoisseur. The sign says, «the best fried rice» and I left without an argument. It was pretty dang good. Take this review for what it is, one mans simple opinion about a simple entrée done right. On a side note, my girlfriend had the Cardjnal roll and also enjoyed it.

Made it back here for another lunch. Two sushi and salad combos. I was very pleased with the sushi, I do wish there was a wider variety of combos on the lunch deal but I can understand why they limit the selection. The rolls were cut for 8 pieces and my father and I split the two rolls half and half and with the salad we both had a large enough lunch for a non-ravenous appetite. Sushi/sashimi fish in general is fresh frozen and thawed before serving. The difference is things like quality of fish to begin with, skill of the chef in slicing it, quality of the freezer and time for thawing. So, I assume the fish(like at most restaurants) was previously frozen but it was done so in a manner that let it taste very fresh and the angle of the chef’s knife was right to set the tenderness of the fish.

In my opinion, this is the best sushi restaurant in Louisville. My family eats a lot of sushi, we usually go out for sushi at least once or twice per week. We have not found better than Tokyo in Louisville. The fish is always extremely fresh and high quality. The presentations are wonderful as well. They do not make the rolls swimming in sauce and tempura, you may be able to find a few on the menu, but Tokyo has the quality sushi experience to offer. Members of the family who do not like seafood still love Tokyo bc they offer a wide variety. The service is always exceptional and welcoming and the venue very cozy and comfortable.
