I came along with my kids for a class field trip with 8 kids who are 5 and under. Yeah. The tar pits aren’t nearly as exciting to a bunch of snot faced kids as it might be to your favorite grown up geek. It’s in LA, it smells like someone is resurfacing your drive way, and someone will get actual tar on themselves.

project 23 is an ongoing excavation into the prelapsarian detritus and primordial ooze that continues to crop up around the la brea tar pits. amusingly enough, no amount of civilized construction can prevent the oozing of tar among the manicured lawns of lacma and the page museum. project 23 documents the prehistory of los angeles: from ancient pollen to bones and fangs. a fine reminder of how fugitive is human existence. do not miss the giant sloth statues near by. they provide comic relief. recent excavations for a new pkg lot found a mammoth skeleton!
