Been going to the Grill for 24 years. It’s my second home. Breakfast is the best. Great hot dogs and Gus and Carlos put their luvv into what they cook. The Salsa is made fresh every day. Great people and conversations too.

I don’t play golf. But I live close enough to come here when I just want a basic breakfast for just a few bucks. It’s not fancy — the ingredients are all standard 1950’s food service — but it’s reliable and simple.(It would be a 4 star if the ingredients were better.) FAST service(never a wait), plenty of seating at the bar or tables. Stay as long as you’d like if you want to write a novel. If you want a fancy gourmet breakfast this isn’t your place. If you want a full menu(but with a wait on weekend mornings) go to Café 50’s(which I love). But if you want a grilled cheese, pancakes, bacon and eggs, or a burger or hot dog… they’ve got you covered with the basics. And because the chef is also your waiter, you can easily customize anything.

Honestly, this may be the best coffee shop /diner in the area. But since it’s part of the Penmar golf course, the only people who know are golfers! The pancakes and eggs are great for breakfast and the burgers are great for lunch. If you order the burger, be sure to ask for a real plate. They usually serve it on a paper plate that just doesn’t hold up. Also, keep in mind that they are geared to serve food fast so golfers can make their tee times. That means not much service beyond delivering your food, but that’s how it should be. Bring cash because that’s all they accept.

Cute and informal space on the grounds of the municipal golf course. Convenient place to eat before or after a 9-hole round of golf. You might consider this spot for breakfast instead of the 50s diner on the nearby corner of Lake and Lincoln which often has a line. You might also eschew lines at many other breakfast spots nearby if you’re looking for a quick breakfast.

The food is awesome coffee shop selections. You must check out the banana pancake stack — no sugar just banana!

The guys behind the counter are very friendly. The cook can fix up a mean dish. The place is nothing fancy, but good food.

this is probably one of the best kept secrets on the Westside. As you drive by Maxwell’s, Rae’s or other coffee shops with long lines, just laugh knowing that there will be no wait at Penmar. Don’t expect a smile from Gus the cook/manager. He’s a great guy, but not the most charismatic person wearing an apron. His excellent food makes up the the lack of entertainment. Oh… and don’t ask for«egg white’s only.» The pancakes are EXCELLENT… like none other. He once told me his secret ingredient, but I’m sworn to secrecy. Oh…and Gus’ home-made salsa is my favorite. It’s the real deal. The pricing is also very good. Where else can you have a beer for breakfast! Try it, you’ll never go back to Maxwell’s again. Don’t forget to leave a little something in the kitty jar. Gus remembers tippers.

Only one review so far? Unbelievable! Been going to this little coffee shop for a long time. Gus, the proprietor/cook, is friendly and accommodating. Prices are about as cheap as you’ll find, and the food is solid. Golf course view and assorted hack golfers wandering in to rent golf bag carts give it a unique quality. Beats the $ 10 breakfast on Main St.

They really are 4.5 stars. It would have been 5 but the condiments provided need some improvement. My in-laws LOVE all-beef grilled hot dogs. They’re in their 90s and mobility is a problem. Scoured the web looking for a place where I didn’t have to wait in a long line or shlep to the SFV. This place is a throwback to the 50s. Some individuals might classify it as a dive but it makes GREAT grilled hot dogs which is split on a toasted bun. The fries were good – not greasy but I suspect were previously frozen then fried. The menu is simple – look at a board. They also make sandwiches(did not try), hamburgers(enjoyed by my bro-in-law and nephew) and breakfast until 11AM(sis-in-law LOVED the pancakes). Carlos was the chef when I came with a party of 12 for lunch on a Sunday – did not need to wait for a table(we pushed them together to accomodate us) and the food came out hot. Condiments were basic: ketchup, yellow mustard, jalapenos, sweet relish, diced onion. If you want sauerkraut, dill pickle spears, dijon mustard on a hot dog bring them yourself – I did so that the perfect hot dog could be eaten. My fellow hot dog lovers on the Westside – you will not be disappointed! PS – you don’t have to play golf to eat here.
