Tried this new location expecting what was a good place on north main. Service was slow, food so-so. I won’t be back though maybe the cook was haviing an off day. To many good mexican places in Longmont to risk a bad experience again for me.

I live in the Highlands hood in Denver, so I am not lacking some top-notch spots for Mexican fare. Of course, I would expect to find some very good Mexican food joints up in Longmont and indeed, Las Palmeras does not disappoint. Went in on a Friday, it was busy, but not crazy busy and you didn’t get that all-to-familiar panic undertone that some of our smaller spots can exude when they are on the edge of being completely in the weeds. The staff was excellent, triple teaming most tables and not missing a beat. The menu is loaded with not only what you’d expect, bet much much more. To my delight, sorta buried in a 30-item list of specialties… there it was…(queue harp music)…Carnitas. Not just Carnitas, mind you… the kind that makes it a MUST order… the words«Fridays Only». We all know what that means… someone’s old family recipe in a dish honored and limited to one day only for the masses. I have to tell ya, these were THE best Carnitas my not-so-little gringo ass has ever sampled. Killer… period. I guess they run out fast but I was lucky according to the owner. He was right. Thanks for being there Las Palmeras. Have fun…

I love love love good old fashion Mexican food and this place serves it. We had a party of 30 for a celebration for my father-in-law. From order to serving it wasn’t that bad but they only had one waitress serving the whole party. The food was good. The orders all around the table varied from breakfast items to traditional stuff like menudo, enchiladas and flautas. The flautas were superb, truly homemade. The menudo was also delish and you gotta a love a place that serves awesome handmade flour tortillas. One thing I love in Colorado is their love for green chile, its not what a Californian is familiar with. Green chile is almost like a stew of sorts served alone and very rich, this place does a decent job. The prices here are very inexpensive, most items are in the $ 5-$ 6 range and combo plates are around $ 7.50. My combo plate had a little of everything a cheese enchilada, a bean tostada, a beef taco and a small bowl of green chile with one flour tortilla. Hearty, good and shareable which worked out well. I would definitely return, my sister-in-law now has me hooked on the flautas. One item that was different but not bad was the horchata, almost orangey in color with lots of cinamon. I’ll be looking forward to see family some time soon so we can return here again!

We tried Las Palmeras for the first time recently, even though I’ve driven past it(in one location or another) for years. Our meal featured a large order of nachos, a bowl of green chile and chicken fingers with fries for the daughter unit. The nachos were basically OK, but nothing memorable. The portion size was smaller than the prevailing standard(which is, admittedly, too damn large), but was acceptable for the five-dollar price. The beef on top was particularly skimpy, however. I have a thing about good green chile, and the bowl of goop Las Palmeras served didn’t measure-up. First, it was pink! It had an overly slick texture and was missing the rich, savory chili and pork flavor that characterizes the real deal. I suspect that it was actually made on the premises, but it tried hard to seem like it wasn’t. Our daughter’s meal was exactly as expected. Plus, it was free since we attended on a kids-eat-free day. Finally, the service was, in my wife’s words, «weird.» Our servers were notably awkward and unpolished. I know, it’s a cheapish local joint, not the Rainbow Room; I don’t expect or need impeccable service. Still, it was notably odd.

There were a lot of positives to Las Palmeras… the food was really good quality Mexican at an inexpensive price. I had the Burrito Supreme which was big, filling and tasty. The salsa brought to the table before the meal was nice and spicy(but not enough to scare away the lovers of the bland) and there was a strolling mariachi moving from table to table!(Note: It’s not called a mariachi band… that is akin to saying a big band band) I’ve been going out to eat A LOT for many years and never come across that… and to top it off they were very good! If you add in the friendly service, almost the whole night was a win! The only lackluster point was that the margaritas were premade… a small point, especially with the special on them… but everything else was so good it stood out. Well done, i’ll be back again!

It’s been 16 months since I lived in California(got out just in time) But with the many years I spent in the L.A. area you can bet I saw more than my share of Palm Trees. Along with those Los Angeles icons I had plenty of fine mexican food, ranging from the street taco truck to the best restaurant in the city to the kitchen of a friend. Just to round out my California experience the last 5 years I lived there were spent up north on the edge of Monterey Bay and many memorable meals of good mexican fare. The vision of those palm trees of yesterday definitely came to mind the first time I saw the sign in front of Las Palmeras in Longmont, my new hometown. Las Palmeras sits In a highly visible stretch of Main Street(hwy 287) in what I am told was once a family pizza joint. When you walk through the doors it’s nothing fancy just a family setting with pleanty of booths and tables(a large bar is in the back). What does grab you is the energy of the place. This place buzzes and it should because this is great mexican food at reasonable prices served up by many members of an extended family, it feels like home. At my first glance of the menu I had been a little skeptical there are so many dishes ranging from the common combination plates of tacos, enchiladas and such to hamburgers and fried seafood. Ahhh the seafood it appears to be somewhat of a speciality of the place, some very good mexican dishes del mar. Camarones a la Diabla(spicy shrimp) is simply the best I have ever had! It is extremely spicy hot! In fact the manager of the place stopped by our table after we placed our order to make sure I understood that it was so spicy… I say Bring it On!!! Jumbo shrimp sauteed and served in a deep red spicy tomato based sauce with onions and peppers, rice and beans filled my overly large plate. It was fantastic, since that first visit I have tried many standard dishes(tamales, burritos, chimichanga) and I can say every dish has been flavorful, satisfying and«muy bueno». A full bar with a large selection of imported and domestic beers along with great spirits and the ubiquitous margaritas of various flavors compliments the food very well. Of course they have various specials like $ 2.00 margs on Fridays. I do not think you can go wrong if your craving some good mexican food in a family atmosphere at reasonable prices, the holy trinity of a good mexican restaurant. We may not have many palm trees in Colorado but we do have a great restaurant with that name.
