My cousin and a few of her college sorority sisters are house sitting a place in Long Beach, for the summer. I agreed to help move some of the furniture, if they would treat me to dinner. After the heavy lifting was done, we all took a vote, and decided to have Chinese delivery. I knew a lot about Long Beach restaurants, because a couple of years ago, I dated somebody from there, who knew how to «cook,» in every-other room in her apartment, except for the kitchen. However, I remembered that eating food was not the most important thing in my life, so I managed to overlook it, and let her do things her way. I knew that all the Chinese restaurants in Long Beach sucked, so we decided to call the only one I had never heard about or tried before. China Wok had its own website, but there was no listing for it in Unilocal,so the girls figured it might be new, and we took our chances. We phoned in our order for the following: Appetizers: spring rolls(undercooked wrappers containing tasteless, stringy, dry vegetables); Szechuan wontons with peanut sauce(recommended by the order taker, at first sniff, they smelled like rancid«Skippy,» and visual inspection revealed slimy wontons, that were submerged in sauce that was 4 parts oil, to 1 part peanut paste); Scallion pancakes(fried, cornstarch patties with three or four little scallion pieces in each, and no taste); Soups: Wonton(almost good, flavorful broth not too salty, but without seaweed or slivers of pork.); Hot and Sour(tasteless dark sludge containing no ingredients we have ever seen before. Main Course: Jumbo shrimp and scallops With garlic sauce(Jumbo shrimp were okay, but scallops were of poor quality, and suffered from freezer burn) . P. S. Last time I was first to review a place was about eight years ago, when«With Cheese Please,» a cheese steak eatery opened in Rockville Centre. I predicted that they would go out of business within a year. Instead, they went out of business in seven months. I will not make any such prediction about China Wok, but I would leave some advice for anybody who wants to eat there: Order simple stuff that does not need a lot of preparation. Order identifiable whole food like shrimp, so that you can easily recognize it, and determine its quality. Need I Say More About China Wok?
