Just driving around old lee summit. Been wanting to try this bbq joint. Near closing time ordered a ½ pound of burnt ends. We’re flat out excellentI worked next door to a original smokestack bbq for 20 years had them at least twice a week so I know good bbq. This is a great restaurant with a good well worn atmosphere. while no restaurant is perfect this place exemplifies what Kansas City barbecue is all about

An excellent little neighborhood barbecue joint. My wife and I were in Lee’s Summit for the day. She loves the place, so we decided to stop by. It was the two of us and our infant son, complete with large stroller, diaper bag, toys, and all that other stuff involved in taking a baby out for a brief visit anywhere. The interior is pretty small – it is an old filling station, after all – and with all the baby stuff we took up a large portion of it, so we put in our orders and went outside to the seating there. It was a very warm day in early April, in that time of year when it’s too early to turn on the air conditioner, plus there’s the heat from the kitchen, so the interior was a bit hot, anyway. The outside dining area is very pleasant, though, and we enjoyed just sitting and relaxing out there. The ambiance, both inside and out, was very comfortable, and the service was fast and friendly. I got the rib tips sandwich, and my wife got the pulled pork.(The baby didn’t get anything, but he doesn’t have teeth yet.) The pulled pork was excellent, with a very good smoke flavor to the meat. I hadn’t had rib tips before, and I’ve discovered that, while they are good, they just aren’t really my favorite. I have a hard time with pork ribs, too, so it’s a personal thing, really. Don’t let me discourage you from trying them if you like pork ribs. I really enjoyed the sauces, too – the regular has a very nice celery seed flavor, the spicy has a peppery flavor that sneaks up on you, and the sweet is, well, sweet.(I’m really being Mr. Obvious here, aren’t I?) For sides, we got an order of fries and slaw. The slaw was vinegar-based rather than cream-based, which is my preferred type. The fries were well seasoned, and stood alone without ketchup or sauce just beautifully. Can’t say about their other sides. Overall, I have a number of barbecue joints around my house so I probably wouldn’t drive the half-hour to Lee’s Summit just for the Filling Station, but when I am in the area I won’t hesitate to go back. Excellent food, excellent service, excellent location, excellent ambiance – just an all –around good place to go.

As a kid growing up in LS, The Filling Station has always been a family favorite, we would take family members that would come visit also. The barbecue is mouth watering and divine. We moved in 2011 to Virginia and could never find a barbecue out there that could come close to the bar that the filling station set in our life. Now its 2016 came to visit LS and of course had to go get some barbecue! Still tastes marvelous even being owned by a new owner. They really have done a good job with the foods. Will for sure continue to recommend to friends to try.

With all the bbq choices in KC, The Filling Station has its place. It’s not the best place in KC, but it does fill your needs if you’re in Lee’s Summit. It’s located in downtown which is nice but parking and seating can be a problem. I’ve never walked away unsatisfied with the food, service, or experience. I’d recommend but don’t expect to be blown away.

Great little«off the beaten path» bbq place. Great setup in an old gas station with creative period décor and much cleaner dining area than most, if a bit small. Menu was predictable bbq with a few stand-off exceptions. Out with friends in Lee’s Summit and convinced them to try something there local rather than trekking back to op and going to Joes KC or Jack Stack. Glad I did. Much more casual than both and food was a solid B. Anywhere else it would probably be an A-, but KC has some amazing bbq. Burnt ends were a C-, pulled pork, chicken and sausage were all A-/B+. Fries were crispy and fresh but lacking a little extra seasoning for my taste. Notable stand-out exception was the FRIEDPICKLES which were unanimously voted the best any of us had ever eaten. Ever. Seriously I would go back for the fried pickles alone. They are that good. Served in Spears instead of chips, fresh, crunchy and delicious. Good news is I didn’t get voted out of our group for suggesting this — everyone enjoyed the mea abs would go back. Only notes — one, they are pretty slow. Like unable to multitask slow. Like take an order and not take the next order until the first is half prepped slow. The food was fresh and worth the wait though. Two, be aware that the dining room is small and if they are busy it might be tough to accommodate a larger group. If it is cold outside, the dining room cools off whenever the door opens. Overall solid, non-chain, authentic kc bbq joint. B+

The food is great! I’ve eaten at some big name place while in Missouri and, in my opinion, Doug does a great job! I’ll be stopping in every visit to the area. Can’t say enough good about the food.

I had a turkey leg during downtown days to go with my adult beverage. Thanks for offering these since no one sells them inside the dt days.

Great place for quick BBQ! The pulled pork sandwich is delicious and the coleslaw is particularly good/creamy here. Even when they are crowded they manage to get orders out in no time!

I like this place as far as the meat goes, but the sauce isn’t my style. The french fries are great! They are very fast getting the food out. I think they are are little high in price.

My girlfriend and I came in the other day and it was really good. My biggest issues with most BBQ places is you don’t get what you pay for and price. I love Oklahoma joes and nobody has come close to that BBQ anywhere. However I lived the food, I had the brisket and it was juicy, flavorful and down right delicious. The onion ring and fries were crispy. They had 3 types of BBQ sauce on the tables and normally I’m not a spicy anything kinda guy but their spicy sauce was easily better than the other two. Overall great experience, good food and I kinda dig the nostalgic vibe here. My only complaint is the price of brisket per pound. It’s more then Oklahoma joes and it is not better. I’ll be coming back

I tried Filling Station BBQ because I’m a sucker for dives and ingenuity… I must say I really enjoyed the food here. I order ½ slab of ribs and ½ a pound of burnt ends(I know I always order that. don’t judge me). The burnt ends are just as good as the top places… they were juicy… moist. and good thing for me… they come naked and you can dip in their 3x BBQ sauces… I personally loved the spicy… the original reminds me of some other BBQ sauces I’ve had… The sweet was very good too. The ribs were delicious! The rub applied gave the ribs a delectable taste without sauce… great smoked ring… nothing but goodness. A! Burnt ends 8.5 Ribs 8.75

Turkey leg is «seasonal» but not available in November? Isn’t Thanksgiving the season for turkey? Still, it’s great food.

We rode by this place on the Tour de Lakes bike ride and it smelled marvelous! My husband got the burnt end sandwich and I got the pulled pork. Both were very good. Staff was extremely nice and helpful AND they have red cream soda!!!

Get the sausage. Rest is quite boring. Don’t waste time here when pork and pit and Jack stack are a few minutes away

Such a fun lunch here! Kind service, historic-retro cool décor and excellent Smokey Joe’s sandwich(chopped mix of turkey, ham & beef) on a super soft bun. The baked beans are yummy though a little sweeter than I like(my son devoured them!) and hubby and I also enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich. And to top off the nostalgia, the free refill of red cream soda put us all in a happy happy mood. They deliver within 5 miles too.

We must have come on an off day. Everything seemed to be a day old. The fries and fried pickels we deep fried twice. The bbq sauce was ok. Beans need a lot of work.

What is it with KCBBQ and gas stations? I love this location and it being in a historic blg(gas station) and they have done a great job turning it into a fun place to get BBQ. The food is good and getting better. It was good and then sort of dropped off and then there was a new owner. I had not been here for a while. I can say the food and the service are. much better then before. Last time in I ordered the rib plate and was asked if I wanted babybacks or spare ribs. I asked if he thought one was better than the other. He said he really liked the babybacks for the flavor but like how much meat there was on the spareribs. So I ordered the babybacks and got spare ribs. No worries I like those as well. Have to say they were cooked just right but I would have liked more smoke on the meat. I ordered a Coke and got a Diet Coke. That is a problem so I said something and it was replaced in an instant. After that all was good. Good spot that I think will continue to get better.

Very good, local, homemade BBQ. I had the burnt ends, which were excellent — and lots of it! I arrived for an early dinner, just before 6pm. There were a couple of people in line in front of me and one or 2 tables with diners already eating their meals. My food was delivered to my table promptly. I did notice, however, that as the line got just a little bit longer, or when a family of 6 came in, that the kitchen had more trouble keeping up with the demand, and there seemed to be an issue with some of their orders not being right. I will definitely be back when I’m in the area.

Considering this place is so close to Kansas City, you would think the food would be better. I don’t think this place should even call itself BBQ. When I walked in, the place smelt kind of like trash and all of the tables were sticky. I ordered my food but the food they gave me came out wrong. I decided not to make a fuss and just eat it anyway. The side was cold and the meet was lukewarm, like it had been sitting on a counter for a while. The meat needed to be smothered in BBQ sauce to make up for how chewy and dry it was. I thought this would be a better experience because the building and the decoration seemed like a good idea and authentic but I guess that goes to show, don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
