I won’t even pretend to be an ubiased reporter when it comes to Oak Street Coffeeshop, but before the shop opened three years ago, I didn’t know anyone associated with the business. That has since changed, and I consider myself the better for it. From Day One, I was absolutely smitten by the coffee and pastries offered at Oak Street. You seriously will not find a better scone in Kansas City — and I content, the world — than Martha’s unbelievably great cranberry and chocolate chip scones. The coffee itself is wonderful, too, supplied by local roasters at the Broadway Café. Beyond the basics, the shop is ultra cozy — with mismatched furniture and a suprisingly spacious interior — and always full of interesting people. The menu includes breakfast and lunch, too; during the week, scrambled eggs and oatmeal, with breakfast burritos and the best pancakes I have ever had available on Saturday mornings. Dorna’s home-made soups at lunch are absolutely incredible, made from scratch every day. Of course, there’s free wi-fi and a bottomless cup of coffee, too, but what really makes the coffee shop so truly wonderful are the proprietors, Martha and Dorna. Not only are they terrific cooks, they make friends with every customer who walks in. If you’ve been in more than twice, chances are very good they know your name. If you’ve been in more than five times, they’re probably asking you about your kids or how your new job is going. «Nourish Community» is one of Martha’s favorite mottos, and you can see that reflected with every customer that walks through the door. Yep, I’m a friend of the owner, but, fortunately, that can be said for the majority of their customers. Oak Street Coffeeshop is my second home, second office and my favorite place to go. You seriously will not find a better — or tastier — coffee shop in all of Kansas City.
