I’ll admit to having low expectations going in to this place. Maybe it’s leftover from my days living in Chicago where you can walk 200 yards in any direction & find a good watering hole, but I’ve always been wary of the idea of a bar in a strip mall. That said, Detour really impressed. Food was better than typical bar food and beers were fresh, cold, and cheap. Service was friendly and went out of the way to make our group feel comfortable(including proactively switching one of the TVs to Nick to entertain the munchkins in our group). Nachos are ridiculously big, which isn’t really a bad thing.

They were understaffed on a Saturday for lunch. We had to wait 10 minutes to be greeted at our table, the waitress was apologetic. My wife’s food came out 15 minutes before mine and when I did there was a hair on the bun. When my burger came out the manager literally dropped the plate on the table and kept on walking. He was more concerned about talking to the table behind us about getting a job with another company. When our bill came there was no comment about the hair on my wife’s bun or my food coming out late.

Not to bad of a place. I got the detour burger and held the onions. The fries were really good and seasoned well. The mushrooms, cheese, and bacon on the burger added a nice flavor. Only complaint was that I ordered the burger cooked at medium which would leave a little pink in the center. The burger was pretty much well done which made it a tad dry for my liking. Nice place and I am sure I will be back.

Just passing through and saw this place in a local magazine. Hubby ordered the detour burger w/sweet potato fries. They serve the burger on a sizzling hot plate so it was piping hot and hubby said it was delicious. The sweet potato fries were delicious(I double checked!) and they came with a marshmallow crème and caramel dip. I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap(grilled chicken, no tomato or bleu cheese) and it was good, could have done with some cucumber and red onion but it was a large wrap, chicken was tasty and plentiful and the mild buffalo sauce was tasty. My side was chips and salsa which is hard to mess up. Dunno why reviews are so low here, staff were lovely, prices reasonable and service quick!

Run… away, don’t walk! The worst restaurant I’ve been to in a long time. Menu is heavy on «low quality» ingredients that they try to snaz up to justify what they are charging. I had difficulty finding even one item that sounded appetizing. I opted for the flatbread pizza. Utter disappointment! For $ 8.00 you get a piece of flatbread that is more flour tortilla than naan or «bread». Maybe 4″ x 6″ — 7″, couldn’t have been more than a teaspoon or two of pizza sauce/marinara, a scant ¼ cup of cheese(and I think that is a generous estimate) and THREE(count them) pepperonis rounds. They are bigger than average but only THREE. I paid $ 8.00 for that? I thought«have an open mind» so held judgement until after my first two bites, it tasted like dry cardboard. Just about then, the manager came by and I explained that as much I as I like pepperoni pizza or flatbread, this just wasn’t worth eating, much less paying for. She suggested I try the fish tacos. I love fish tacos so I happily accepted her offer. At this point my family finished their meals and after inquiring what they thought of their meals they said, «Oh, look, a baby wolf…», which is code for«I don’t want to answer your question.» When the 2 fish tacos arrived, I must admit they looked great. When I picked up the first taco, I noticed that the taco shell was a thin flour tortilla baked into a taco shell shape. The toppings were very seasoned and a bit spicy. When I took a bite of the mahi mahi, it was a total of 2 «cubes» of fish about 1 ½″ each and terribly mushy, no texture and very«wet». I did a double take to make sure it was even cooked it was so mushy. I tried two bites and was done and looking to leave the place as soon as possible. Earlier, the manager had offered to give me a voucher for a free meal, which was very nice, but, after trying two dishes that I disliked enormously, I couldn’t be talked into taking the voucher for the free meal. Because we had prepaid for our food prior to sitting down, to find the manager, who had gone into the back would have been more trouble than it was worth to ask for my money back. We should have sensed the meal would be awful. On a Friday night around 8:00-ish, only one diner in the place in Keystone/Castleton area was a sure sign of trouble. Save your money… I wish we had.

This is a nice casual burger joint. We visited the one on 86th St. It reminds me of Jason’s Deli in the sense that you get your own drinks/silverware/straws etc. and you forder before seated. The p wasn’t long; very quick but very good. Nice staff. The manager redeemed my coupon even though I had paid, he returned the difference to my card(which was nice). My one complaint is when I was ready to leave and needed a to-go box I couldn’t get my waitress’s(or anybody’s for that matter) attention. I waved my hand to signify that I needed help but they carried on with their little group(social) discussion. That’s a pet-peeve of mine. The manager should be telling his staff to make sure they’re paying attention; to make sure everyone ok, not taking part in social hour themselves. Other than it was alright. We might try the one on Southport that’s closer to me

This is one of my go to spots for lunch. Most of the food is really good, and made fresh. I know i can easily get in and out and back to work in an hour and not feel rushed. I love the mahi mahi tacos, the Buffalo chicken mac and cheese, and salads. On the salads you have your choice of romaine or field greens. I think that’s pretty cool. he flat breads are also pretty good, but I personally found the BLT one to be bland. Probably the main thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is their breaded food. The breading is extremely salty. I’ve tried different things several times and had the same problem each time.

Good food. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are a little more than I would like to spend. It’s an underrated place to watch a ballgame since it’s not a sports bar. Good selection of TV’s that show games.

Menu board cool idea but if your first timer recommend checking out online menu if you have food allergies or needs more details about toppings before ordering. Full menus are posted at order stations however if their busy you fill rushed. Cool place, food was good. My husband tried the Shredded BBQ Chicken Sandwich with caramelized onions & cheese(left off) with chips & salsa. Chicken was moist with generous portion. He noted BBQ flavor different from other restuarants then few bites later said sweet but he liked. He would order again. My Fish Tacos was the reason we stopped in after reviewing the menu online. I wasn’t disappointed. Love finding check-in offer. Unfortunately I checked in after we ordered and sat down. Just another reson to for return visit.

This place has AWESOME burgers… I had a girlfriend recommend it during a day of in law gift shopping… While looking over the menu, the two gentlemen seated behind us started talking to us… come to find out the spicy Steve was named after one of them and the other was the Whistler. I love when you can meet the owners of an establishment and they are funny and natural and not overly hoity toity. They actually joked about how unsuccessful the place was. If its not successful the only reason I can think of is location… its in the same strip as Flemings, across from the Fashion Mall, and tons made in a bag then overpriced restaurants. How good was the food? My friend and I ate lunch there and then I took my man back for dinner that night. He enjoyed it as well. Staff was very friendly and the place relaxed and inexpensive but still offers great quality.

I really liked the concept of the place, and the service was great. The food was okay, nothing I’d be craving to come back for but I wouldn’t be opposed to trying this place again. I’ve had better burgers, but it wasn’t terrible. The flatbread was better than the burger.

Great place! Been craving an Italian Beef since my last trip to Chicago. Couldn’t find one in Indy until today. The menu is amazing for that quick yet fresh food. One if the owners(Matt) met me at the front door to guide me through my experience. Already knowing want I wanted the Italian Beef, I also indulged in the fries with blue cheese crumbles and Cajun spice. These were extremely delicious. Thanks Matt! You guys are doing a great job and I will spread the word.

Boo Hoo, I really wanted this to be a favorite. If you’ve followed any of my posts, I started a conversation thread asking where are the BEST burgers in Indy. –Still taking suggestions & still trying to find — We tried Detour on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago. The place was pretty empty but the manager was there in front to greet us. He asked if we’d been there before and started explaining the posted menu. We made our choices, paid & grabbed a seat. It’s a nice place with some flat screens and room for enough people to host a rowdy Colts game. Our food arrived shortly and after we had taken a few bites the manager came by & checked on us. We had no complaints for him at the time. We were ravenous. We did our reviews to each other, later when we got in the car. FF– crisp as we ordered & just OK Buns & accompaniments– bun fresh, tom. ripe, lettuce wilty, not cold & crisp Beef– It’s gotta be ‘all about the beef’ for a burger joint! We weren’t crazy about the flavor of the beef. Both of our burgers were way overdone. I ordered med.(which in a beef or steak joint is usually pretty pink in the center) mine was brown cooked thru & thru. His was ordered MW& was well, even crispy around the edges. Both were«extremely» dry. I had read a review about a «juicey» burger & wanted to taste the meat so I didn’t get any condiments, Well, I was glad the tomato & lettuce moistened it a lil. I realize that the meat temperature that comes to your table is totally dependent upon the grill chef or grillmaster. This one seemed to be horsing around a lil maybe due to the emptiness of the place. The manager would have definitely replaced our burgers if we had complained but we had to keep on moving that day. I haven’t given up on them & want them to succeed. I will probably give them another try sometime. Oh, huge & great unbelievably juicey burger with tremendously great flavor, & fresh crisp accompaniments, I know you’re out there. We’re patiently waiting. Come to mama & papa! —Reply to Owner Response— Thanks so much Matthew W for your response! By all the other Unilocaler reviews, we just hit a bump in the road. We will definitely give the burger another try. Everything else was okey dokey. Ya got a nice place there & we’re rootin for you to be on top. PS – If you’re the mngr or owner that employs the mngr: I knew you were a great mngr when I saw you leveling the tables in your spare time! That’s unheard of! good job

A group of coworkers and I checked this place out for lunch pretty soon after they opened. Do they have some kinks to work out? Yes, but it sounds like they are doing just that based on a local blog that I recently read where the owner responded to comments from folks about pricing, options, etc. This is what’s called a fast-casual place, which means you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. So, no servers, but the food came out super quick. Most of us ordered a burger and fries, but the menu looks pretty extensive with American fair(burgeres, chicken sammys, salads and the like). Based on our first experience alone, Detour Express definitely earned a spot on the work day lunch rotation. Also, they have one of those fancy Coke FreeStyle machines(I personally love people watching… it’s fascinating to see people work these and watch as they smile in delight of all of the options). This place will be sweet in the summer when they can open the garage doors and they have a bit of outdoor seating.

This place has excellent burgers. I had lunch here about a week ago with some people from work, and we had a great experience. The food is a little pricey, but it is well worth it. Only complaint was that the avocado on my burger was not ready to be used yet. This place has one of those new touch screen coke machines, which is pretty awesome. I like that you can add flavoring to about any drink. The service here was outstanding for the type of place it is. We were treated great at the counter while ordering, and management came around and asked how our meals were. I will definitely be going back here.

Opening Weekend! We decided to check out the place because we heard they were offering free food. Free always sounds good, so we packed up the family and headed on down into Castleton. Unsure what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised that the free menu consisted of 6 different choices: Italian Beef Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Breaded Tenderloin, Chicken Sandwich, Cheeseburger, and a Salad for those wanting to eat light. I was pleased with the selection, because while dining with children, it’s hard to explain that they don’t have any choices. The husband and I decided on the tenderloin and the boys were happy with the cheeseburgers. We all love using the touch screen coke machines that gave us a plethora of options on what to drink — and for those non-soda drinkers McAlister’s sweet & non-sweet tea were also offered. Our food came out hot and timely — we all enjoyed our meals. The burgers were too big for the boys so we had to go boxes waiting on us upon departure. The free dinners were being served on behalf of a young man who was burned in an electrical accident and consequently didn’t have insurance at the time. They were collecting free will donations on his behalf. The food was so great, we didn’t think twice about giving a hefty donation to the cause. I only rated the Detour Grille a 4 out of 5 because I wasn’t able to really see or try the full menu — upon return I will consider raising my rating to a 5 star review. So far, I’m definitely a fan!

Visited for the weekend opening. I ordered the pothole burger because I love blue cheese. The burger was outstanding, juicy and cooked to perfection. I did skip the tomato and red onion on my burger. My surprise was the macaroni and cheese. I never order mac and cheese but couldn’t resist the looks of this tempting adult version. It did not disappoint. Cheesy but with layers of flavor not mushy or overcooked. Definitely an item I’ve always considered kids menu fare but this is a surprisingly adult version. Also, this is the only restaurant that I’ve been to with the coolest coke machine EVER! It has like 100 different types of drink you can make. Décor is sports bar but the open front makes it perfect to stop in after a ladies day of shopping at Ulta. Next time trying the stoplight salad. Huge portions, great prices, nice addition to this location.
