Athens on 86th

We walked in and the place is empty. They ask if we have a reservation. Nope. They look like we frazzled them. Remember the place is empty. Hostess had attitude and the service was only saved by who I imagine is the lead waiter. Our waitress was average at best.
Food is average if not slightly below average… unfortunately the people of Indianapolis have limited options to compare against.
I will say my parents liked the gyros.

We’ve been here a number of times and this review is long overdue. I wish it was closer to us! The saganaki is always perfect… the salads and the main courses are always really tasty. From salad to souvlaki and everything in between, the food is always awesome. I have a friend who lived in Greece who really likes this place too… so they must be on to something. And the service! Oh my… you feel so welcome and they remember you.

Amazing baklava, worth the visit for that dessert alone. I can’t do it proper justice via written word, but the balance of sweetness and texture is probably best in town. Even if you don’t traditionally go nuts over baklava, you owe it to your tongue to try this one.
Half price appetizers when we were there (late afternoon), so we loaded up with hummus, tzatziki, tyropita and spanakopita … each was right at the «very good, order again» level. Tyropita was possibly the favorite of the bunch.
Specialty gyro was dang tasty but know that it’s knife and fork, you’re definitely not picking this monster up to eat it. Flavors were deliciously familiar yet also a bit different & distinctive. I’d be totally happy to get it again although I might save the extra dollar and just get the classic version next time.
Owners, if you’re listening — please add a hummus and tzatziki combo appetizer plate to your menu. I’d happily pay in genuine United Statesian currency for it. I love tzatziki but having to get a giant portion of it all by itself (or as part of a $ 15 plate) was a bit of a bummer.

I’m disappointed beyond belief. Two things I wish I didn’t lie about in person– a bad haircut and a terrible piece of lamb. I’ve come back to Athens on 86^th TWICE in an effort to rekindle the magic that happened with the off the menu lamb filet (see earlier review) I enjoyed on my first dinner. That option hasn’t been available since and the suggested alternatives have been either overcooked or baked like a cafeteria Salisbury steak. I filled up on rice because that was the only edible food on my $ 30 plate. The second star comes from a place of kindness; our waiter was very polite to my daughter.
I won’t go back.

I have eaten many lunches here and always satiated by authentic Greek flavors.
Not Americanized at all, the real deal. The past month I have needed to cater a few events.
Need I say as a hostess I appreciated the silk glove treatment. Tina, the owner and I chatted as the needs for each dinner were a bit different and together we personalized each evening.
When we picked up the food, it was hot, well wrapped, the flavors were kept in tact though big quantities, and everyone on the staff was smiling. Need I say, I will continue as a retail customer and hostess needing a professional caterer.

Good food. Great service. We love to come here when we hit the 86^th St area which isn’t as often as I’d like anymore since we moved down to the Herron-​Morton area. Get the saganaki for starters!

In town for work. Good service. Decent food. I had the half chicken for dinner with the Greek salad, potatoes and green beans. The salad was the best part, the rest was ok. Then had a coffee, which was good, and a dessert that’s kind of like a cheesecake, yummy.

Very pleased every time I eat here! The staff is very friendly and the food is always amazing!

We ended up visiting here after the Greek festival ran out of food, and it was the best idea ever! I ordered the house gyro and fries with feta… Wowzer. Both dishes were fresh and delicious ! Th service was friendly and on top of everything. The beat part was we orders this appetizer, I’ve forgotten the name, but they set it on fire and yell OPA! It was pretty cool and delicious. I suggest to visit here for a fun evening out and delicious food!

Have you ever been to a restaurant and think «the food alone speaks for itself?» This is that place. I promise you there isn’t a thing on this menu that you won’t like. We’ve gone for lunch on numerous occasions and they are incredibly polite and attentive. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich which is basically the same marinade but a large chunk of chicken served on a pita. I order it with onions, feta and tzatziki. Firey feta dip is out of this world. If you haven’t eaten here you’re truly missing out.

Love the food and atmosphere! The mixed grill special was a plethora of filet, chicken, and shrimp. The flavors are truly an expanse of pleasurable tastes. Loved the appetizers of tazikki and saginaki. The service is always great. They are oh so polite. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

This was some of the best Greek food we have had, and we are Greek so we do know about Greek dishes and how they’re supposed to taste. I’d say this is authentic Greek food. The combination plate was plenty for both of us to share. It offered a nice variety of Greek items, all of which tasted good. The waitress was pleasant and the restaurant looked good too… clean and nice décor. The prices seemed fair. I’d highly recommend Athens to others and if you like Greek food you’re in for a real treat! Wishing I didn’t live 4 hrs away. Try it and enjoy!!!

I’ve been here for dinner a few times, and overall, the food is decent, but in my opinion, a little variable depending on the dish. On one visit, I had the stuffed pepper which was quite good; it was nicely seasoned and tasty. The moussaka, which I had on another visit, was a good, solid, traditional version, but not the best in town. On my most recent visit, I had the dolmades with avgolemono sauce; the sauce tasted fine, but the texture was off; it was thickened and lumpy rather than smooth. I’ve tried making this at home before, and this reminded me of one of my failed attempts. With the $ 16 price tag my expectations are a bit higher! The sides of potatoes and green beans were a little under-​seasoned for my tastes; again, not bad, but not what I expect for a meal in this price range.
The servers are friendly and this is clearly a family owned establishment; I really do like to support small, local businesses like this, and will likely continue to come here on occasion when I’m looking for Greek food on the Northwest side, but there are more consistent, higher quality options for Greek food elsewhere in town. I’m not sure if the variability depends on who is working the kitchen on a given night, or if there are just some dishes that the kitchen staff haven’t quite perfected, but I am hoping this can be sorted out!

This review is only based on a recent carry out order of several appetizers ranging from saganaki and pita to hummus and baba ganoush. The inside of this business reminds me of many other Greek establishments in that it is somehow both insanely dark and cozy at the same time.
Athens was quick to fulfill my somewhat large order and at a fair price. Highly recommend many of their sampler style apps the next time you’re hosting a party. The saganaki can be ordered already «flamed» with a lemon wedge to go.

We love this place and have had it in our regular rotation for years. My husband needs a regular dose of the Athens Specialty Gyro and I’m in love with the freshness of the side salad and calamari. Ok, fine, my addiction is really to the baklava!
You can’t go wrong with the saganaki, either. If they have the sea bass or grouper dishes, definitely jump at the chance to order. I don’t particularly like grouper, but it’s just stunning here!
The service is absolutely fantastic about 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time we just grin and bear it because we just love this place so much. If you go in and the staff is having an off night, focus on the food and the service issues will become just noise.

Terrific little Greek restaurant in a strip mall on 86^th St. The décor inside makes you feel like you’re in a little outdoor café. What completes the scene is that the food comes out of what looks like a little trailer (I’m not sure this was intentional, but so be it).
Service was really friendly and pretty quick during lunch.
Food was definitely homemade and featured some items that you would see at your typical Greek restaurant.

The service here was good, prompt and friendly without any hovering. It appears to be a family run establishment.
The food was delicious and abundant. Sexy Beast and I could likely have just split one plate.
The price was reasonable. We really should stop in here again during our next trip to Indianapolis.

Food of the gods. This is pure comfort food. No counting calories here. You’re dining with the Greeks now. You’re too skinny! Eat!
My attempt to broaden the husband’s limited food spectrum landed us here for our date night. All I had to say was «they have lamb», and he was in. He made reservations, and we arrived to a lovely, low-​lit dining room with murals of Athens on the walls. Festive theme with a comfortable atmosphere. Suitable for a romantic meal or a group of friends. Service was great, everything ran quite smooth. Our waitress was very polite and answered all of our questions about the menu.
The seating is well organized, with the group tables in the middle with the intimate ones on the walls. This is helpful when you don’t want to be in the middle of someone else’s party. There is also a full bar, complete with ouzo. (Hint, hint) Rob started with some calamari and fakes soup, and I started with some spanakopita and avgolemeno soup. We couldn’t stop saying how much we loved our starters — fresh calamari (not rubbery at all), and the spanakopita was fluffy, flaky goodness. We loved the soups! Rob ordered the rack of lamb for his entrée, and I decided on some dolmades. The lamb was juicy, tender, and had quite a bit of meat. My dolmades were good, but maybe a bit too much olive oil on the vegetables. I’m more of a steamed veggie person, so I wasn’t crazy about the green beans and potatoes being drenched in oil and butter. I finished my dinner with a sweet Greek coffee. A perfect end to a fulfilling meal. Happy tummies all around!
I would agree with other reviews that the prices are way too high. I understand that it’s a small business and all, but it’s difficult for us commoners to drop a Benjamin on a meal for two. *cough, cough* Other than that, our experience was lovely. A date to remember!
