I go here twice a month. I really enjoy their food. I always order two Texas dogs. I have zero complaints. I will definitely return here.

We got the hungry man box that comes with two fully loaded hot dogs and an order of French fries. I believe it was $ 10. The drive through took about 5 minutes, and the hot dogs were delicious. This place isn’t fancy by any means, but if you’re in the mood for a classic hot dog, this is the place to go.

Oh man what is better on a cold(or hot) day than a chili cheese coney?! Seriously so classic, nostalgic and delicious. One of the oldest chains in Houston — JCI started in 1922, so it’s truly a vintage eatery. Love that frozen lemonade and Delaware Punch. Chili cheese fries are on point too. Love!

Been eating here for years. I now live in NC and was there after a year away last week. Prices higher and quality lower. Better at home than this. I will not be back

I’ve been coming to this location for years, always love getting a couple of hot dogs and some fries every now and then! The staff is friendly and they’ve recently renovated the outside of this location. Other than that it’s clean, cheap, and they even have a drive thru!!!

Not the best hot dog, but worth a try if you are new to Houston and want to experience something unique to «Houston.» They are your standard hot dogs and can be served with mustard, chili sauce, cheese wiz, and onions. I prefer other fast food options but if you have a friend in town and need to get a quick/cheap bite, this may be an option you want to explore.

Had so much high expectations for this place, I wanted to love it, but I couldn’t. The cherry lemonade was good though

Is this my first choice to eat when I go out? No. Is this my first choice to eat when I want something fast and unhealthy. No, but when I don’t feel like driving far this hits the spot. The food isn’t the highest quality, but its not supposed to be. It’s a hot dog with various toppings on it. If you ask for it «enchilada» style they drench the dog in copious amounts of chili and their cheese sauce. Their«specialty» dogs aren’t that bad either. Of course there are other hot dog places that are much better real specialty dogs but this place is close and fast. I personally like the onion rings they serve here. A little salty, but flavored pretty well. They go great with the dipping sauce they provide. Hot an crispy every time I have ordered them. For an unknown reason I usually get the oreo shake too. Don’t ask me why, I just do. The one thing that is most impressive here is the customer service. Everyone is always smiling when they take my order and and super friendly to start a conversation while I wait on my order. Every now and then they will have special specialty dogs which cost a little more but have been pretty good in the past. They also have 2 for 1 chili cheese dogs specials where you can get your super fat boy on a fill up to your sick to your stomach. Once again this is not the most fancy or elegant place serving the best food, but I have yet to have a bad experience the others have to get some quick grub to satisfy my junk food craving.

The old standards are still great. Coneys and tots. The designer stuff is all a hot pile of mush. Burgers and designer dogs and tamales. I should have known that any thing Michael Berry recommends is probably poor in taste.

It aint Nathan’s, Nedick’s or the Bow Wow, but it’s a decent hot dog at a great price. The chilli is a bit thin and lacks substance. The dog is smallish and not 100% beef. But at 91 cents, the coney special is an amazing deal. Very tasty and filling at an amazing price.

Just passing through to Galveston and we thought we would give this place a try. Super disappointed! Flavorless chili, bland hot dog, tator tots ok, but who messes up tator tots. This place was packed with lunchtime locals but I don’t know why. 2 dogs, 2 tots, 2 drinks(nasty sugar water) $ 19.42. We won’t be back.

Who doesn’t love a classic chili dog every now and again? That’s precisely what you’ll get at James Coney Island. You know the type, the kind with finely chopped up mild beef chili, the kind with freshly steamed buns, the kind with an standard, no frills frank. If you’d like to mix it up, a bit of classic mustard, onions, and cheese wiz is offered as well. Although I rarely venture past the Classic Coney, the fries and tots, unless freshly made, aren’t worth it.

So I just read a number of these reviews here and most of the really negative ones seem to be from happenstance and not a reflection of the restaurant in general. Like the guy who got his CC# stolen, the other guy who has as bad taste in friends as he does in restaurants or the guy that waited a while in the drive-thru because some soccer mom bought a bunch of dogs for the team. While all those instances suck and I would be mad too, JCI is a fairly straight forward proposition and the formula doesn’t need to be changed. You go here to get Chili Dogs, and that’s it. Every restaurant has its thing and this is JCI’s thing and they do it very well. I get two dogs, Chili, cheese and onions with chili cheese fries every time. I put some of their hot sauce on it too, its great, probably one of the best flavors out there. Now, we can all see, its a fast food place. I am not claiming these to be the best hot dogs on Earth nor am I claiming that you are going to receive a life changing experience and become a Chili dog chef. It’s generic food, but that still makes it great. Reader, I know you have been sitting at home and all you wanted is just a hamburger. Plain, Straight up, no bullshit hamburger, because there is something wonderful about that flavor. That flavor is as great as a $ 100 steak, when you are in the right mood. That is the magic of JCI, its flavor in a traditional rating system is not going to win any competitions, but don’t rate it in that system, it is above the system, beyond it. Sit down on a late Saturday afternoon and have a couple dogs and chill out. You wont be disappointed.

A visit to the venerable Houston hot dog chain’s Museum District location constituted part of my wife’s and my declared«Night Of Loafing.» Since we were out of pizza rolls and we couldn’t be bothered to microwave them if we did, I got out of my pajama pants and we drove to James Coney Island because they don’t deliver that I know of. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and chili/cheese tots. Both beat a long drive to Sonic, but I’m afraid I can’t overlook the runny cheese on the tater tots, nor the Chicago dog, which features a beef hot dog and psychedelic green relish that has me asking questions with regards to the real provenance of the hot dog and what that goop was two hours later. Still, nobody’s loafing was interrupted, and the next time we decide to spend our night that way, James Coney Island will be toward the top of a very short list.

My second trip to James Coney Island… not bad at all! The reason I came through was because of the Show Dog of the Month by Chef Hori of Kata Robata. The Kata Ro-Dog-a is a panko-crusted, deep fried Hebrew National all beef dog on on bun with soft scrambled eggs, Japanese curry sauce, pickled cucumbers and Yuzu Kosho QP Mayo and micro greens… yup… such a complicated hot dog! but it was pretty damn delicious. Filling too! One of these bad boys is enough for one meal… but being the fat ass that I am… I also ordered a chicago dog and baked tots! But what impressed me about this location was the staff… they were very courteous and they always came to clear and clear the tables after people left. I found this kind of nice since at most fast food establishments, you gotta throw away your own trash and you always seem to find some nasty gunk on the table prior to your meal.

They have hot dogs, you want them right meow if you truly love #merica. They have a drive-thru so you do not need to get out of your car. Me gusta. If you have been to one JCI you have been to them all — get the chili cheese coney all the way and some extra tots to share with Napoleon, it’s all you really need.
