These were really good burgers. I had the Vietnam. Carrots, cucumbers, hoisin, some other stuff all atop a great burger for an awesome flavor profile. My wife had chicken sandwich that had similar flavors and also super tasty. We both had the sweet potato fries which were really. The burger are not huge, but they will fill you up. We left a lot of fries as we were stuffed from the burger. Good selection of beer; but no draft, whats up with that? Too good for draft. Also at 1:00PM with a fairly empty place I had to valet, lame. Our sever did not seem that into being there, but the manager was really nice and took great care of us.

The hotdogs are amazing! I ordered the California and tried my friend’s Mexican. Both were delicious. We also tried the fried Mac & Cheese. So good! I went during lunch and we were seated immediately. The server was quick and very friendly. Would recommend and will be back!

Love their burgers!!! They are up there with the best in the city. I got the South of the Border and was in Mexican heaven. Pico de gallo, avacado, jalapeño and even tortilla strips on a burger, wow! And the Chipotle bun is amazing too. Oh yeah, and I ordered it medium rare and it came out perfect and juicy! Also tried the elk and buffalo sliders. Very quality as well. The one thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the fries. Didn’t really like the regular fries, thought they were bland. But the sweet potato fries were good. All in all, definitely going back real soon

Very good/quick service. Fried mac n cheese was great! Not dry at all like some other places. Burgers were great size, go with medium on the cooking type if you don’t like any pink. Got mine medium well and it came out dry. Other than that, great atmosphere! Would certainly come back.

Best burger & fries I’ve ever had! The service was absolutely great! Our server was funny and very friendly & the GM on duty was very nice and kept checking up on us, he even gave us a free apetizer coupon for the next time we come. The drinks were good and reasonably priced. I will definitely be coming back and I highly recommend this place!

I must have gone to a completely different place than all the negative reviews went, because I really liked the Chopping Block. We walked in on Friday around 7, and there was a smattering of people there, which was surprising for a place RIGHT on Washington, and Friday night dinner. We ended up sitting at the bar, but the place has a really nice patio, with lots of space for drinks or dinner. The bartender immediately took our order, in which I had a house Chardonnay, hubby had a Blue Moon. They have a good variety of cocktails and wine, which really reasonable prices. The basis is burgers, lots and lots of burgers. I opted for some fried pickles to start, which came with spicy chipolte ranch, and were YUM! I also had the New Orleans burger which was really good, spicy, cooked to perfection, with a nice greasy buttery bun. I almost inhaled it. S/O had the turkey burger(it was a cheat meal for me), and he really liked it. Not dry, served with sweet potato fries. They had one burger that I will without a doubt be going back for that had fried mac and cheese and thick pepper bacon, I may have a heart attack, but it will be worth it! Service was fantastic, friendly without annoying, and the manager came by to let us know if we checked in on FB or liked their page, automatic 10% off the bill. I really hope this place stays around, it has good atmosphere, good burgers, and good service.

I did not want to blast your business publicly, but I was in there for lunch today(Fri, Aug 30 @ 11:50) and my experience was bad enough that I will not return… We sat at a table for 20 minutes until I had to flag down the hostess to find a waiter, meanwhile the table in front of us were waving their arms trying to get their check, and told us the food was not good. We decided since we drove across town for this we would stick it out, but when our food finally arrived(45 minutes into our lunch hour) the meat in my burger was gray and the bun was a piece of chalk… I was more pissed off that the entire staff(including the guy in the red shirt that we assumed was the Manager) showed ZERO concern for the epic failure going on in the entire restaurant… Judging by the discussion we had with yet another table, you lost several customers today.

Finally tried this spot out, wasn’t disappointed. Menu offers an array of gourmet burgers. You can choose from unconventional meats such as bison, elk, turkey, or Kobe beef. I chose the Firehouse burger, it had a little kick to it, a kick that made for a party in my mouth. Service was excellent, I highly recommend giving this spot a try!

Have you ever had one of those cravings for meat? Just primal yearning for something carnivorous? Well, that happened to me right as I was driving down Washington Ave today. Yes, I know, how can I be craving meat the day after Independence day you ask? Everything we made yesterday was in a tube shape so we had a very phallic holiday. But, I digress. So, as I was driving around in the roiling heat, this beacon of burger bliss popped into my vision. I swerved into the parking lot(insert women driver jokes here) and found a parking spot quite near the door. Once inside, the meat game was on. The menu was absurd, in a good way, with options. There were so many tempting choices, but I settled on the Havana burger with a side of sweet potato fries. I was so right in this decision. I once read that a burger should be judged by how many napkins are required to eat it. The more napkins required, the better the burger. I’m glad the server gave me plenty. The juicy patty was cooked to perfection– perfectly pink in the center. The Manchego and the roasted pork shoulder melded smoothly together and the crunchy pickles gave a brightness that kept this captivating burger from being too heavy. The salt and pepper bun was light and fresh– perfect foil to the rest of the meat carnage. The sweet potato fries were very good– no soggy or greasy mess. Just crunchy orange tubers fried to perfection. I can’t wait to come back and try something else.

Chopping Block has the potential to be great. The place is cool, the wait staff is nice, and they serve you fast. Chopping Block has the potential to be great but there are a few things they need to fix. I should start with what they get right. The fried green beans are delicious. The menu is expansive and the prices are reasonable. It will take awhile for you to decide what to get. My biggest problem is that I ordered my burger medium and it came out well done. My friend ordered his medium-rare and it also came out well done. If you are not going to cook them to order, don’t ask how we want them. The fries just aren’t that great. They need to have fries that can compete with their burger. Lastly, I found my burger, the Farmer, to be overly salty. I think I may have been a victim of hype with this place. I was really excited to try this place and it failed to live up to my inflated expectations. I’ll probably give a try again sometime. Hopefully they can fix some of these problems.

Went for a late lunch early dinner recently. The waitress was very good. Drink never empty. Had the fried pickles as an appetizer and they were good, not greasy but a little underseasoned. The burger while big and juicy was also a bit underseasoned. I felt like it could have been really good if the meat was a bit more flavorful. I am glad they are in the neighborhood and hope that they take the reviews into consideration. I will be willing to give them a second chance and hopefully I can up my star rating.

It’s too bad, I really wanted to like this place. Their selection sounds deceivingly tasty, with«limburger cheese», «jalapeño mozzarella bun» and«hash browns» all making appearances on the menu. However, the Chopping Block under-delivers in every detail, from their appetizers and burgers, to their décor and wait staff. Even if they polish up, I give this place, at most, a year. This was my first experience with fried green tomatoes and I will probably never order fried green tomatoes again, anywhere. You know when you eat an onion ring, and the whole onion comes out from the batter, leaving you feeling like an arse? The fried green tomatoes simply shed their skin, forcing me to think, «I can do better at home.» The fried pickles and fried macaroni were just as underwhelming. The burgers on their menu have every intention of being exceptional. I’m sad to say that none of the ones I tried hit the mark. The fries are frozen. The burger patties are too small to be satisfying. My friend ordered the Chopping Block Burger because it comes with bread and butter pickles. When he got the burger, there were dill pickles on it. After waiting an awkward amount of time for our waitress to come back, she says, «The kitchen says we don’t have bread and butter pickles.» Five minutes later, she brings out bread and butter pickles that have magically appeared. The price is too high to match the quality of food or service. The tables, made of chopping blocks, are ridiculously high. I felt like a child. almost able to rest my chin without bending. The plates are cheap-o clear glass plates and everything was garnished with poorly chopped up coleslaw around the edges. It’s like pulling teeth trying to get any attention from the servers. The manager means well, acting all chipper and trying to show a sense of urgency… but when it was game time, he didn’t come back to check on us like he said he would. He sat in the corner, chatting it up with staff and watching TV. The Chopping Block is trying too hard to be something it clearly can’t be. It will never be as good as its«competitors»(Burger Guys, Hubcap Grill, Lankford Grocery & Market). HELL, just in the same parking lot, Kung Fu Saloon has a better burger with grilled cheese sammies for the bread… Sorry Chopping Block… but«you have been chopped.»

the burgers were OK… and as other reviewers mentioned it seems that someone needs to educate the staff in the kitchen about the difference between ‘medium’ and ‘well done’. The place is nice… it was not busy when I arrived for lunch(about 2:30pm)… but unfortunately my drink order and my burger order were wrong. I sent the drink back, and just decided to accept that the green chiles i added to my burger were not present… although despite informing the server the green chiles were still on my bill(the server informed me that she was not aware that ‘they even charged for those!”) The fried green beans for an appetizer were not very good. lots of breading… tasted like they were purchased in the frozen food aisle at Kroger. My boyfriend’s comment sums it up best — «i would have enjoyed a flask and Whataburger much more.»

FOOD: I didn’t know which burger to try so I got 2 slider plates(sliders each) for myself. My goal was just to try a majority of the meats and then come back to try the full burger later. Price was a little on the high side compare to the other gourmet burger places I had before. Proprietary beef: Good flavor. I like the peppery taste. Would get this again. Buffalo chicken: Sauce not too strong which is good for buffalo chicken imo. Usually its very sour. Meat was chicken breast so a little dry. Hot dog: Good snappy casing. Could use more pepper in the meat mix and be a little more juicer. Would def get this again. Boar: Dry and had a liver-ish tastes Lamb: Dry. Not too strong lamb taste Venison: Dry. Not as gamey as I thought it would be Elk: Mild breakfast sausage taste. My favorite meat out of all that I sampled. Kobe: More well done that I would have like. Would give this another try next time I come back. NOTE: Server didn’t ask me how I wanted the burgers done so came out a little on the well-done side. SIDES: Fried pickles: Crispy and juicy Fried green beans: Crispy with a little spice kick. Would def get this again. Sweet potato fries: Nothing out of the ordinary. More potato than crisp. DECOR: Tables were so that you were pretty far from the person next to you and was a little on the high side.(Maybe I’m just short… =() Had 4 TVs inside showing sports(ESPN etc) and two outside in the patio area. Seems like a good place to catch a game. Had a full bar up front.(The place use to be a bar/club I believe.) PARKING: Convenient because you can park in the Kung Fu parking lot for free if you show the parking guy your receipt when you leave. Save $ 10! If you come for dinner the parking lot was fairly empty if you come early. And if you stay and go to Kung Fu you get free parking for that too! SERVICE: Called ahead to reserve a big table. Some people backed out but they were very accommodating in rearranging tables so we were too spread out. Servers were very attentive and not overbearing. Refilled drinks promptly. FINALTHOUGHTS: Would come back and try the Kobe medium rare and also one of the full burgers with ELK. Buy one get one half off during happy hour is a plus. Price is a little high imo but given its location it is understandable. 3⁄5

A new burger joint that opened up on Washington, and to me this is a big fat… meh. As I walk in the front door, the U shaped bar is in back, wood tables scattered about for an open dinning area. A few TV’s turned to ESPN with the sound off. Fairly relaxed, especially for a Washington bar/grill. Even a bit generic, which is kind of refreshing with all the overly stuffy, or overly ironic craptacular spots up and down this street. An extensive selection of burgers on the menu. I have had the Pioneer, and a bite of one of the wild game sliders from my buddy. Personally, I would not bother with the wild game here, Sammy’s is much better. The burger had bacon, Swiss, sauteed mushrooms, some kind of aioli, on a Chipotle bun. There are a ton of different options, maybe to much IMO. Most every burger comes with its own different kind of bun as well. The burger itself was just average. I ordered it medium, and it came out closer to well done. I don’t mind it well done, but what is the point in asking how I want it cooked, if it is just coming out like this anyway? The mushrooms were canned, which always disappoints me. Also, for being such a new spot, it already tastes like the griddle is overly grease and needs to be cleaned. Really garlicy as well. The sweet potato fries were good. The rest of the menu is apps, sandwiches, and salads. Booze wise, just a bunch of generic well drinks, a crappy beer list all in bottles, and some house wines. Nothing to see here. The service is polite, and prompt. The kitchen times are pretty good as well. So all good on that front. Not bad at all, just ho hum and very average. Much better burger joints around Houston, and often for much less money.

Went to the Chopping Block for lunch the other day. The service was prompt and the waitress was friendly. I had the fried pickles and the«Chopping Block,» burger. The pickles were tasty, and not at all greasy. I was also impressed that the giant hamburger was not greasy either. The hamburger was awesome, and so big I took part of it home(this never happens). A great addition to the neighborhood.

The first thing you will notice walking into this place is WOOD, WOODEVERYWHERE! Anyway, seating for our group was prompt and the menu is deliciously overwhelming. One entire side of the menu is filled with all kinds of burgers and flavor combinations. The more you read, the more you’ll want to try everything. My mind was set coming into this place. I had seen a picture of the Mexico Haute Dog and knew I would be getting that. Two of us ordered hot dogs and the other two ordered burgers(I forgot what they ordered specifically). And yes, burgers and hot dogs come with fries though it didn’t say so on the menu. Started off with a plate of fried onion rings and yellow peppers. They were both ok but I did enjoy the sauce that came with it. When the entrees arrived, we all had to take a minute or two to fully grasp what was in front of us(and snap a picture or two). The burgers were incredibly juicy and, yes, grease will drip out of the burger, but if you weren’t expecting that, well, sorry? My friends said the burgers were really tasty and admitted they’d have to come back again to try the others. Hey, you! Yeah, you, the one that ordered the hot dog. I know what you’re thinking, «This hot dog is huge and there are toppings all over the place.» I see you looking at your fork and knife. Yeah, maybe that’s a good idea. *SLAPSHAND* NOITISN’T. You pick up that dog and disregard the mess you’re making. You pick it up and you put it in your mouth and you chomp down. Fork-and-knife hot dog? NONSENSE. You eat it just like any other hot dog and you let your taste buds have a party. Okay, seriously. The hot dog is pretty darn good. The bun is great and reminded me a bit of the bread from Cane’s or Good Dog Food Truck. The dog itself didn’t seem that great but the abundant mess of toppings made up for it. Service could be better but I don’t expect perfection from a new place. Given time, I’m sure they’ll work the kinks out. Hopefully. Will definitely return!

This was our first visit to the Chopping Block, and definitely not our last! The burgers and hot dogs were excellent, the sides were tasty, and the service was great. Kevin, the manager, came out, gave me a few glasses of wine to taste before choosing one I like(they do not currently have a drink menu, but their food menu makes up for it in the meantime). Overall, great service and an excellent addition to the Rice Military area! As far as the food goes, we got quite the selection at our table: Vietnam Burger(yes, yes, and yes) Pioneer Burger(I didn’t try it, but our friend who got it loved it) Brooklyn Burger(holy f bomb) Philly Burger(2 thumbs up) Mexican Dog(again, didn’t try it but it looked like it just couldn’t be bad) and the Baltimore Dog(good, but would probably try something else next time) Along with the burgers and dogs, we got the sweet potato fries, regular fries, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and the fried mac ‘n cheese. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, but I particularly enjoyed the tomatoes and pickles. Mmmm. I posted a couple menus to give an idea of prices and options. Definitely worth a try! Welcome to the neighborhood :)

Saw this restaurant has opened. It moved into the building previously operated by two other bars/restaurants. Very nice décor with nice size patio. They are open for lunch and dinner and late nights on the weekends. Full service bar inside, and looks like full bar on patio too(not open when I stopped in). It indicates they have gourmet burgers. In addition to the burgers, you can find salads, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs also. The menu is quite extensive as to toppings and burger combinations. In fact my mouth is still watering after seeing the menu. I got the Korean Chicken sandwich. The chicken was grilled and tasted great, no spices on the chicken that was overpowering. It has kimchi and a spicy mayo on a poppy bun. I am sure you can change the breading(there were a lot of different types on the menu). The sandwich was good, I would prefer more spice, but I got it to go and will remember next time. I got some fried onions and peppers. It was really tasty, not too much breading and the onions were red onions, so not a harsh bit. They have fries(waffle and regular and sweet potato). I will have to try the waffle fries and burger next visit.(I also saw a bacon wrapped dog, which is DEFINITELY on my mind). Super friendly service, both at the bar and rest of staff. They have televisions throughout the restaurant with open tables. Sound echos, but i think it is because the walls are kind of bare at this time, but I had no problem hearing the people I was with. Cannot wait to try it again.
