I’m definitely a fan. The service is slow, almost inattentive but once you get a waitress or bartender they are very good. Its kinda funny because once you place your order the food comes relatively quick. They could obviously use more help in the form of wait staff. Go when you are not in a hurry or sit at the bar if you are and go hungry because they do feed you good size portions. The food is real good and I recommend it primarily for that reason. The very attractive and liberal pouring bartenders are just a bonus. The Philly cheese steak sandwich is enough to make anyone come back — and I don’t usually like Phillies! Now I’m going to have to go eat lunch there today because I’m hungry and not in a hurry.

I have mixed feelings about 1400. On one hand, the service is pretty sub par. I believe they’re under staffed as there was one waitress for about 50 people in my section. That equated to waiting for about 20 minutes per drink. I’ll never understand how bar owners or managers can allow service like this and expect to be profitable. The alcohol is EVERYTHING, it’s their breadwinner, it’s what pays the bills. Keeping drinks in people’s hands should be managements main priority. I will say though; I enjoyed myself. The band was cranking out a wide array of Latin music, with a splash of George Strait and Simon and Garfunkel. I’m not typically a fan of the«live band» at bars, only because I enjoy conversation. But these guys were great! The crowd was Latin on Friday night, so the dance floor stayed pretty packed. There was a very cool vibe, and I saw women dancing with women, old dancing with young, and overall people just having a swell time. We ordered buffalo wings and a cheeseburger at one point. Typical bar food, nothing special. The restrooms were surprising very clean. Order from the bar if you happen to find yourself here.

I have only been there once, but it was a good experience. My date and I were the only ones in the entire restaurant but it was still a good experience. I think if there was a lot of people there it would be a cool place to do a happy hour on a Friday afternoon. We went on a Monday night for the 16 oz rib eye w/baked potato special. It was pretty good. They over cook my dates steak but were nice enough to do another one for her and got it right the second time. But I would have to say the surprising high point of the evening were the Margaritas. They were small i think they came in the size of a whiskey glass. But them bad boys packed a punch. We started one before the meal came and drank it throughout the meal. And even after all that food we could still feel the effects. Needless to say we had 2 more and we were loving it. All in all, it was a great place to take a date, good for one on one talking and nice warm atmosphere. Even the patio was nice. And the service was excellent. I am reserving the 5 star for the next time I go. If its just as good then i will be bumping up the rating.

Maybe I just had a bad experience here… But a few months ago, my friends invited myself, my fiancé, and a handful of other friends, to come out and eat at this restaurant. Since we were a fairly large group, we were seated outside, enjoyed a few drinks before we ordered our food. The waitress was nice, but in the end, we were sourly dissapointed at her service! First, we had about 5 boys there… and she convinced them to split the $ 50 ten or twelve lb burger(I can’t quite remember). Said there was plenty of food in the burger for the guys to split. Well, trust me, when the burger came out, it was more like a 2 lb burger with ten lbs of lettuce, tomatoes, etc!!! poor boys! They were all so hungry afterwards with barely a bite! We were very very upset about this. Second, when the waitress came for a second round of drinks, and everyone ordered, I declined a second drink. My first was still full and I dindt’ plan to order another one. Of course, when she comes back with the drinks, she ignored someone’s order completely and didn’t bring his drink, and then she brings me a drink that I did NOT request and said that it’s ready for me.(which she charged me, and I had to give away to a friend because I did not want to waste it). Third, when we paid for our meal, we paid partial by cash, and partial by a few credit cards. It first took about 20 minutes for the waitress to come bring the bill, and another 20 minutes to come get the bill with payment(after I even tried to chase her down at the bar several times with money in hand). I collected everyone’s money and credit cards, and neatly calculated and wrote out by last name and amount that everyone paid. It was listed by individual. What did the waitress do? She rung up all of the credit cards and pocketed the cash! Basically, she charged all of the credit cards extra to cover the aprpoximately $ 80 we had in cash. One guy, she charged him about $ 12 for the meal, and $ 80 for tip!!! So in the end, everything that we paid by cash was not applied to our payment and everyone that paid by credit cards were charged an insane amount of money. At this point, I was fuming, and talked to her about it, and 30 minutes later she was not able to «correct» the problem. The manager came out and reran everything, and although credit card machine said we were paying extra, he assured us that he reversed the differences out. We demanded our tip back and he paid it back to us. Overall, I will never ever go back to this place after the service I had with the waitress. It’s unfortunate because the couple that invited us frequented this location a lot and enjoyed the restaurant. But, after this incident, last I heard, they weren’t really planning to come back much either.

One of the ESPN commentators on the College World Series remarked that he was glad the final two teams played a three-game series, rather than one championship game. Anything can happen on one night, but on a longer timeline, a truer result can be teased out. By analogy, I think the fact that I watched all three games on consecutive nights at 1400 provides for a circumspect review. And as much as I love the place — great layout, great food — the service at 1400 was performing at about a 700. There is one particularly nice bartender who will bring you drinks himself or just check on you, even on the patio. The first night, there was only one waitress, and he was nice enough to help her out. And she needed it. Our bills were jumbled up, and on one tab, even though we had been giving her our names with each order. She tried to separate some, without an itemized bill, so we didn’t know what was on there, but then we helped her separate the rest. Not that big a deal perhaps, if she hadn’t looked put out every time we asked for something. On night two, there was NO waitress present, just the same nice bartender on his own. There would seem to be a management issue here with scheduling and having the right people present. I know the bartender was busy and harried, but he managed it, still checking on us even on the patio, and we tipped generously. It wasn’t until the third night that some of the kinks that on a small scale are manageable but on larger one become exponentially worse. Steak night. One bartender(different from the previous two nights), four waitresses, one owner/manager/chef, and LOTS of people. We had a fairly large group, but the place was packed with after work folk and families and game watchers here for a championship because 1400 is normally less crowded than other sports bars. All taking advantage of steak night. Who knows. But the major problem seemed to be that the waitstaff is not assigned to sections. They just walked around haphazardly until someone grabbed them for an order. When I first got there, the bar was crowded with happy hour people so it was tough to get the bartender’s attention, and all four waitresses were in the corner talking or punching orders into their computers. I stood there, not wanting to be obtrusive, for 15 minutes without so much as a glance. And as waitresses took orders out to the guy grilling steaks, they passed the rest of my group on the patio several times without even acknowledging them. I finally managed to get 1 or 2 of them to start coming by our table. But over the course of the night, I had to go inside and pick up what we had ordered from a waitress 20 – 25 minutes ago literally every single time. Anything from the bar had already been sitting there — once, a whiskey on the rocks had time to melt completely — they just hadn’t brought it out. As for the food, even something as simple as chips and salsa was taking forever. I thought they were maybe waiting to bring everything together, but who knows how long stuff was sitting in the kitchen without being brought out. And the staff was always huddled in that damn corner punching stuff on the computers, sorting out bills that had gotten mixed up, the manager investigating to see what was going on. A total mess. Took forever to sort out our checks. You get the picture. I did overhear the manager say to two of the girls at one point, «Did you forget everything you learned over the past two days?» So rookies might be part of the explanation, but on a bustling night like steak night, you gotta have some veterans. One last point, speaking of steak night(I think they were also grilling steaks Monday night, or at least grilling something else). There has got to be another place to put that grill. There are two outside patios at 1400, one on the west side of the building, one on the east. If you have a north-south running building in Houston, in June, on a 100 degree day, people are going to want to sit on the east side in the afternoon or evening, where there will be shade, maybe a breeze. So why would you put the grill right next to it, filling the patio with acrid smoke every time the cook opens it up? The steak was delicious, but I don’t want to go home smelling like one. In the end, I must reiterate, the 1400 is a nice place with great food, but the service was simply execrable. We’ve been up there for more than just the three nights I referred to, and over time it’s seemingly gotten worse. I don’t think we’ll be back for awhile, at least until some wrinkles can get ironed out.

I had no idea this bar is what used to be Time Out, which was a favorite of mine back when I lived ITL(inside the loop). I had an idea of the location but this place had been so nicely redone I was in disbelief. I have not been there for their happy hour yet but did come on a pretty chill night and play pool and shuffle board. Their Long Island Ice Teas are so effing good! They are in an oversized glass too so be careful. The layout of this place is pretty awkward but they basically just added on to the old building. There is a very nicely sized patio with great music. Bartenders are great, the drink prices are decent, I havent tried the food but I am planning on hosting my second UYE here soon for Happy Hour. The location is great, parking is pretty tight but there is always off street parking.

So I walked into this place expecting a complete dive bar, at least that was the feel I got from the exterior. To my surprise the joint was great inside. Looked like it had been recently remodeled. Very bright interior and very open. Almost had a reception hall feel to it. I half expected a wedding party to come in at any moment. It was a Tuesday evening after a «Hurricane» which turned out to be nothing more than a standard summer storm in Houston. But everyone shut down for work that day so I didn’t know what to expect of the crowd. But, it was pretty dead. Me, an older gentleman drinking a scotch waiting for his to go order, 1 bartender and a waitress. Needless to say, it wasn’t hard to get served. What this poor unsuspecting bar didn’t know was that I had a group coming to join me, which turned out to be somewhere around 40+. I didn’t even expect that many people to show, but I guess after sitting home all day on a Tuesday, cabin fever set in and people were ready to imbibe. Now generally when we show up to a bar that is not expecting a Tuesday crowd, I expect the service to suffer, but I have to say, these folks manned up. My service remained impeccable the entire night. I didn’t personally order any food, but a good number of folks did. The overall consensus was that the eats were pretty decent. I can only speak for the fries I stole, but it’s hard to mess up fries. Drink prices seemed pretty reasonable. Not sure if it was a Happy Hour special, but my Bud Light bottles were $ 3.00 all night, which in my opinion is pretty good these days. I didn’t ask the liquor drinkers how their tab ended up, but no one made any snide comments about the prices to me later, so I assume they were at least in line. I didn’t leave the bar area for the most part, but I did see at least one pool table in the middle room and a shuffleboard game on the back wall. My friends put them to good use for most of the night. All and all, everyone seemed to enjoy the place and we will definitely return. I don’t know how the crowd is on weekends, but if you just want a nice place to stop off for a drink after work, I would definitely recommend you give this place a shot.

i pulled up to this bar that i drive by all the time not knowing what to expect. it’s been open for 2 months now and formerly housed time out ale house and sports bar. the large parking lot in the back was full. i was impressed. the 2 outdoor patios were both full. main room was rowdy with a crowd of blue collar latinos dressed up for a friday night obviously enjoying themselves. the other side of the room had 2 pool tables both being enjoyed by groups of patrons. the place is nice for a sports bar and everything feels brand spanking new. it’s a comfortable atmosphere. the large dining room was empty so we crossed through it to the other patio which had 2 large tables full of a more diverse younger casually dressed clientele in their mid 20’s. a flat screen in the window was turned outwards so the screen was viewable from the outside. we sat down and i was so relaxed that i felt like i was just hanging out on the porch of a friend’s house in the heights. ceiling fans were a nice touch. the décor has a very texas feel to it, but wall décor was a confusing mélange of grolsch mirror signage, broadway posters, and cheesy stock«lounge» posters. the dining room was empty as they stop serving food at 10 pm and it felt a little sterile. the menu looked fantastic with a variety of steaks, CFS, grilled salmon, salads, some standard bar fare, and burgers/sandwiches. a $ 7.99 soft shell crab po-boy called to me and i was sad the kitchen had already shut down. perhaps i will come back for lunch. the place is huge, easily 3000 sf. the room behind the bar was empty but was carpeted and had a southwestern style chandelier hanging from the center of the room. i think the intention is to host private parties in that room. this place will probably not draw the well-heeled, sports car driving washington crowd. it’s a nice neighborhood place for the people who have been living in the area way before the gentrification and proliferation of 3 story townhomes that now line the streets.
