The place is the king of dosas. The service is consistently exceptional. Our waiter Savinder is always knowledgeable about the foods and very hospitable. Order the gunpowder dosa and you won’t be disappointed! Oh and don’t forget the chenai coffee either !

Chennai Dosas is a hidden gem. With great vibrant colors and flavors that excite both the eyes and the palate. From the samosa chat to the chennai coffee the good food never ends and doesn’t have to. This my third time here and i don’t plan on not stopping by. From the great customer service to the great prices. You will love this place!!! I highly recommend. Shoutout to Savinder for his great hospitality and service. Ohh and do get the tamarind sauce with everything.

Very good dosas and paneer tikka masala. Sambar had authentic South Indian taste. The manager was a little rude. There was plenty of space in the back but he still asked us to wait. Didn’t make any sense. Overall good food and servers were nice also.

This review will be short simply because there’s not much to say. The South Indian food at Chennai Dosa is great and definitely one of the best on Long Island. The prices can’t be beat. I’ve spent more money on food from the neo-fast food places like Chipotle and Panera than I have at Chennai Dosa and maybe it’s me, but enjoying a sit down dinner with a huge dosa definitely trumps your other options in that price range. Also, it’s all vegetarian! If you’re looking for meat, go to Diwan.

This is my first Unilocal review :) After hearing great reviews about this restaurant, I decided to try out their lunch buffet. They serve very authentic South Indian cuisine with a variety of spicy vegetarian dishes. And you get a fresh dosa made to order! For only 10 bucks, it’s a complete steal! Today’s menu included: Idli, sambar, rasam, aloo bonda, vegetable pulao, white rice, bitter gourd with potato curry, palak paneer, chana masala(chickpeas) with a medley of toppings, yogurt rice and mango pickle, salad, and kheer(payasam) for dessert. As a foodie and south indian, I highly recommend this restaurant!!! Very tasty and affordable South Indian food — You’ll leave satisfied!!!

Best vegetarian + South Indian food on Long Island. It’s really hard to go wrong with your order here but if you really an explosion of flavor, get the Onion Rava Masala Dosa. That with some mango lassi is the perfect meal for me. Rasam is good but super hot and spicy, and their apps are small but really allow you to leave room and eat your entrée. Don’t forget to make use of your chutneys! They’re normally hidden under the huge dosa!

I love this place. They serve completely authentic, South Indian cuisine. Their preparation out-bests several South Indian restaurants that I’ve eaten in, in Mumbai(India): they’re that good. Their preparation and service leaves no stone unturned. I’ve visited on weekdays, weekends, for lunch and for dinner. I bring along my friends, «friends», and colleagues, and all leave impressed. Many a times, I visit for lunch buffets during Sunday’s and we eat our hearts out and then top it off with their excellent masala chai. My favorites: medu vada, their sambar. Their ‘thali’ is excellent and includes all their bests. Paneer chili. Masala chai. Everything during lunch buffets, including the deserts(gajar halwa, mango and pan ice cream, kheer) I could write more but words won’t do justice anyway.

Good place for a tasty, economical Lunch when you are really hungry. The buffet lunch usually consists of three vegetable dishes, two kinds of rice, and wada, iddly and/or Pakora. The salad is generally… Let’s call it low-key. At lunch, you get a Dosa with the buffet, which makes for a satisfying meal. I would rate the food excellent most of the time, with an occasional“very good”. The Sambar, lifeblood of South Indian cuisine, is always delicious and spicy(if there are no Chili’s left in it, you will know I was there before you arrived) I have always come here on weekdays at lunch time. The ambiance is peaceful, with Indian music playing unobtrusively in the background. The staff, once you get to know them, are warm and friendly.

The lunch buffet value is outrageous. $ 10 for all that food is a steal. And it’s very tasty food. First, you have a fairly extensive array of items to choose from at the buffet. The day I went there was Rasam, Sambar, Pongal, Idli, White Rice, Lemon Rice, Spinach Pakoras, Muttar Paneer, Squash Curry, several curries I can’t quite recall, and a good amount of chutneys and sauces. There’s also a little dessert area with Carrot Halwa and some Ice Cream. I liked everything in the buffet, but the Idli smothered in Coconut Chutney, the Pongal, and Squash Curry were standouts. Be sure not to stuff yourself at the buffet(a very easy thing to do), because you actually get an entire dosa with the buffet price too! No joke! I had the Butter Masala Dosa which was very good, again, with a huge choice of sauces and Sambar/Rasam/Idli to go with it. I’ve come here for dinner before, and it was just as delicious, thought obviously you can’t have a food baby for the same price you could at lunch hour. All in all, very authentic and delicious South Indian. It’s one of the best parts of Little India in Hicksville.

Love the place, really good South Indian I could find. The dosa is super delicious, crunchy not oily. The aloo masala with the dosa is super tasty. Sambhar is like sambhar not dal water. I would love to come back, and whenever I crave South Indian I would surely come back here. Thank you for your warm service.

Wow this is some tasty, fresh vegetarian Indian food. I came here on a Saturday, the buffet is a little over $ 10 with tax and includes a giant dosa. I was a bit clueless when I came in. They seated me and no one came over with a menu or asked if I wanted a drink for a good 10 minutes. So I just went up and helped myself to the buffet. By the buffet is a list of the dosas you can get with the buffet. They leave a huge water pitcher on each table which is a big plus for an amateur competitive eater like me. Eventually a waiter asked for my dosa order and soon came out with a one meter, comically long dosa. All of the food was excellent. The eggplant curry was one of my favorites. The flavors were tasteful, nothing was spicy hot. Save some room for the desserts. I left insanely full and very satisfied.

Lunch buffet — $ 8.95 –Vegetarian…but very flavorful and diverse I went for the lunch buffet and it’s definitely worth it. If you’re not too familiar with this cuisine I say give it a shot. Although vegetarian, it doesn’t lack flavor, diversity, or taste. Everything is hot, perfectly cooked and enough for a lunch buffet. Would recommend to anyone new or old to vegetarian Indian cuisine. Also, worth the price.

I came here for the first time for Father’s day with my family. Apparently a lot of other people had the same idea. It was very crowded and now that I have experienced it for myself, I understand why. I am not a vegatarian but my dad is and for someone who has a number of dietary restrictions, they were patient and completely accomodating and was able to make him a dosa that he would really be able to enjoy. They made him a very nice and very large mushroom low sodium dosa! As for the buffet, everything I ate was delicious. From the rice dishes to the vegatables with sauces, everything was spiced to perfection, had the right amount of heat and was just as complex as I expect authentic indian food to be. There was also so much to choose from and you get a choice of a dosa all for such a reasonable price! What is also nice about this resturant is that they have more than one type of indian food as I am usually partial towards Southern Indian, which they had plenty of. My negative comments about this place is that the buffet area itself is a little small and feels cramped. It also gets a little messy because so many people are over there at a time. Also, dress in layers because this place likes it as hot inside as they like their food.

I sometimes weep for the lack of South Indian food in New Orleans(or even your basic curry. You can count the number of Indian restaurants here on two fingers). Luckily my folks live near Hicksville, LI, where there’s plenty of excellent Indian food, much of it of the spicy dosa-rific South Indian variety. I’ve long been a fan of House of Dosa, however the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. Chennai is not exactly oozing with atmosphere, but it’s less of a dreary diner. In any case, you’re coming to these types of joints because you’re craving some South Indian delicacies and not for an all around spectacular dining experience. On to what’s most important: the food is so good! I started with idly(plain steamed rice cakes) with rasam(so fiery hot, so good!), a standard South Indian dish. I tasted my family’s platter of fried apps, not my favorite thing, but it’s pretty typical of any Indian restaurant with samosas and donut-y type things, much of it pretty spicy/oniony and nothing to write home about. I’d skip this and stick to South Indian small dishes like the aforementioned idly. I’m a big fan of gun powder dosa, my «usual,» if you will, but decided on gun powder uttapam(aka Indian pizza, but it’s more of a fluffy pancake, whereas dosai are crispy and crêpe-like). The waiter asked if I wanted to add anything else to it and I asked for some vegetables. It didn’t come with a ton or anything, but the vegetables(definitely onions, possibly some mushrooms and peppers too) are baked in along with gunpowder spices. Holy flavor explosion! Dipped into savory sambar and creamy coconut chutney, it’s just perfection. No bells and whistles at Chennai(nor a single alcoholic drink to speak of). Expect to walk out pretty stuffed with goodness for a low price. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Usually I need to be dragged kicking and screaming to a vegetarian meal. Its been quite some time and after quite a few visits here that I am finally writing a review — so I cannot actually recall the state of mind I was in to set aside my meat-eating addiction and give this place a try. The fact that I have been here at least five times since my initial visit does say something. Every time I visit it is for their lunch buffet. It’s probably one of the better buffets in Little India on Broadway. The items rotate daily and freshly prepared. Do not assume that vegetarian food = healthy as there are plenty of fried items available in their buffet… but oh so delicious. Made to order dosas/uddapam. I would say at least 10 buffet items to choose from. It’s reasonably priced and great quality food. I will be a regular there — it’s that good.

As a child, my father used to eat cream of wheat and I would never try it. Glad those days are over as I dine at the vegetarian buffet at Chennai Dosas. It’s hard to single out one or two dishes here as everything is so flavorful and filling. As one who doesn’t have a high spice tolerance, this buffet is very well-suited. My mouth is alive with the aromatic stimulation without being uncomfortable. The dosas(we shared a potato-filled flat bread and a vegetable pancake) are awesome and we had them after already devouring a whole plate of tasty treats. Dessert should not be missed either.
