I have been living in Halethorpe/Arbutus for 13 years now and I have been visiting John’s barber shop for at least 9 of those years. Of those visits, almost every time, I have received a very good heart haircut and the guys in there are always friendly. The shop has the typical small town friendliness at the store where I always feel welcome. I would easily recommend this shop to anyone.

THISBARBERSHOPDOESN’T EVENDESERVE1STAR!!! I brought my son in on Saturday March 29th2014 and«John», the barber cut my son’s hair. He man-handled my son in a very«rough» manner! Pushing his head down constantly and reprimanding him if he moved ever so slightly. I tried to «let it go» and«dismiss it». I also asked my son several times if he was ok. Hoping that«John» would back off and realize what he was doing was innapropriate and just plain wrong, but he was too ignorant to figure that out. However, when I noticed their appeared to be blood on my son’s face I asked«John» if he was bleeding and he said, «No, it’s just hair». He then took the brush and started to wipe the hair away and in doing so smeared blood across my son’s face. When I asked how that happened… he didnt know! This man, nicked my son’s face causing him to bleed, pushed his head very hard almost crossing the lines to a physical assault, then threw his arms up in the air with exasperation, sighed and turned his body walking away because my son flinched. Really? This is the behavior of a grown man? That was it for me! I got up told him off, pulled the smock off my son and took my son out of there. As a mom I could not sit there and allow this man to hurt my son especially in front of me. I took my son to Sports Cuts Barber Shop down the street and ironically, my son’s football coach was the barber. He said how wonderful my son is and commented that he sat still for him — no problem! From now on I will be bringing my son there. «John» is a mean, nasty person. If he doesn’t know how to deal with children then he shouldn’t be cutting their hair. However, he did cut another child’s hair that went before my son and«John» did not behave in such an agregious manner like he did with my son because he knew the parents and the boy’s father was present. In addition, this barber shop was filty. Hair everywhere and it looked like it had been there from when they first opened in the morning. «John» did not sweep up the hair from the father and son that went before my son either. It was just disgusting! I have two pictures to prove how dirty it was and the fear in my son’s face tells it all! I wouldn’t be surprised if he re-used that brush on his other customers with out properly sanitizing it given how filthy dirty this place was. Beware if you go to this barber and his barber shop!

For the longest time, John’s Barber Shop did not have a barber who worked there named John. Eh, who cares. It’s changed owners a couple times since the original John’s, but this place is a solid stop for a quick cut. While there does appear to be a rotating selection of back-chair barbers, the two front chairs are a solid selection when it comes to men’s haircuts. John(Yes, there is a John back in John’s Barber shop now) and Steph turn a respectable list of loyal patrons into decent looking individuals time and time again. This isn’t a salon. John’s is a down and dirty old school barber shop. The kind where everyone smoked, language was rough, and hair littered the floor like the haircutting scene from Stripes. These days however, a more relaxed, clean, polite environment awaits. A reasonably priced haircut and twenty minutes later will get you looking all spiffy for the weekend once again. Skip the horrible Hair Cuttery-ies with about as much care and concern for your style as the caveman from Geico, and try this local establishment.
