Maverick’s is now closed, and has been replaced by Thai Monkey Club, in my opinion a much superior restaurant.

Based on some of the reviews I’ve read on this place I think it’s hitting its stride. We went twice for lunch and both times were very good. Very good pork ribs and excellent pulled pork sandwiches. The lunch special on the sandwiches made the deal since otherwise they may be a bit pricey for lunch. I believe our server was one of the the owners and he put a lot of effort into making sure we were happy.

I wish I could give them anther half a star because the waitstaff was cool, and I may have given them two or three stars if they marketed themselves as a bar and not a grill, but when I go to a restaurant I’m generally looking for more than a nice server. I wanted so badly to like this place. We walked past it for weeks smelling the delicious smells and were excited to finally check it out. it smelled so good, these reviews have to be wrong. Nope. The reviews are right. We waited a while for the green chili but when it came it was lukewarm and way too spicy. Don’t get me wrong, I like a kick and we were warned(when the server brought it over, not when we ordered), but this was«*menacing laugh* I’m going to knock their socks off!» spicy, not spicy to add flavor. We couldn’t finish it and it was two people splitting a cup. We both ordered pulled pork sandwiches. Both sandwiches were fatty(some fat is good, but nearly half a sandwich of fat), the fries were underdone, and the cole slaw(which sounded really neat on the menu) was run of the mill and soupy. Props for the nice sandwich roll though. Like I said, I really wanted to like it here and the staff were great but roughly $ 40 for two pulled pork sandwiches, a cup of chili, two beers, and tip is not something that I want to blow again for another mediocre meal. You’ve got a great location, great staff, and a great concept, but please put someone else in the kitchen!

A year ago we went to Mavericks. They had recently opened, had no liquor license, and were unable to BBQ due to ventilation problems. Not surprisingly we stayed away for a year. Last night we returned, and we had a much better experience. For starters, we had jerk-style wings. They were well seasoned and the meat fell off of the bones. They were the best part of our meal. The porterhouse steak was good, but nothing special. The 3 legged chicken was fairly dry and seemed overcooked. We opted for side salads which were served on a tiny plate and were composed mainly of iceberg lettuce. A better experience this time. Next time we may stick to the wings.

I would give them another try but they need to improve the food and the service. The fries were limp and greasy but the tri tip was good.

I have been to Maverick’s a number of times and the problems they had in the beginning(ventilation, no liquor license) are a thing of the past. The last two times I’ve eaten there, the food as been awesome! Their service has never been an issue but it is still top notch. There was a good number of people in there the last two nights I’ve been there(with tonight… a Sunday) being one of them. I hope the word gets out that this BBQ place is a great addiiton to downtown Golden!

This place is pretty good. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu choices. Although it is a bit pricey, the food was fantastic! The tri-tip steak smothered in bbq with cheese, peppers and onions… mmmmm…mmmmmmmmmm!!!

We brought my dad here for lunch one bright Saturday afternoon recently. As soon as I walked in the door, my throat closed up from all the smoke that filled the room! I literally couldn’t breathe!(I do suffer from seasonal allergies, so that may have contributed — but I noticed that every single party following us had the same reaction). The very sweet hostess seated us at one of the tables on the sidewalk outside, which worked out just fine as it was in the shade and the temperature was just right. The waitress brought a basket of chips and salsa and promptly took our drink orders. On the menu you are given a choice of barbecue, jerk or teriyaki(even if you order something that’s called«barbecue» on the menu — a little confusing but I guess that’s because everything is grilled). I ordered the barbecued tri-tip sandwich with fries. I was pretty shocked at how big this sandwich was! It came out on a nicely toasted 8″ hoagie roll with fries made of hand-cut potatoes. YUM! The beef was soooo tender and well-seasoned. The extra cup of barbecue sauce that’s served alongside was very smoky and delicious! The only complaint I would have is that the portion of fries was a bit skimpy. While we were waiting for our food, the owner stopped by to apologize for the smoke that was permeating the dining room. He said that is fry-cook overheated the oil in which the tortilla chips were fried. He was very nice and stopped by a couple more times to check on us. I really hope that the overly-smoky atmosphere was a temporary thing because I could see coming to this place regularly for a barbecue fix as there really isn’t a decent barbecue place anywhere near Golden that I’ve found.

Becky– they have shrimp on the menu so it could of been that No liquor license yet. When I first heard this place was opening in the Blue Canyon’s old spot, I thought no way! The ventilation in that location is horrible. It was the worst part about the old Blue Canyon. Now, with the bqq you walk in and it’s crazy smokey, your clothes and hair smell horrible after. I can only image how bad it will get once they get a full seating. Only 4 people there when we walked in and it was very smokey. The atmosphere is really nice, it’s been decorated and remodeled very nicely. If only what I assume are the owners were not drinking beer at the bar, kind of a Grappa vibe with the owners.(locals will know what I mean) The service was excellent! The one really good thing I have to say about this place. The meant was tender, but I have to agree with Becky a bit bland. We had some complementary table side guacamole made, it was quite good fresh ingredients prepared table side, except for the pickled jalapenos. I prefer fresh ones, but the pickled ones were on everything. I’m only willing to give this place another go if they fix the ventilation system which I assume they will not because of same building code that block the Blue Canyon.

Yay! They’re finally open! You’d think they would put their best foot forward to come away with five stars right out of the gate, right? Well… I hate to say this but my ribs tasted like fish! I didn’t even notice if they had fish on the menu. I got mine to go. Yes, the meat was tender, but the taste was all I could focus on, and I sadly ended up throwing most of it out. All the seasoning seemed to be was salt and pepper… and rumor has it that their smokers aren’t up and running yet so the ribs are cooked in an oven? I couldn’t tell the difference, but really… postpone your opening until you can do it right! Nice to see a BBQ place in downtown Golden. I’m going to write this one off as beginner’s un-luck. I will return, hopefully the kinks will be worked out… and hopefully they’ll be here to stay for awhile. (They’re located where the Blue Canyon used to be!)
