My staple growing up and to this day! I grew up in Gloucester and I’m not Italian. But both my mom and dad went to school at St Anns and St Peters and my sisters and brother have also been raised here. My mom made a vat of homemade sauce every week and it ALWAYS included a couple of loaves(if not more) of Virgilios bread. She would take me, as a little girl, down to the West End to get our hot loaves. I remember her giving me a taste, a torture to me! But we would get home and she would give me a small bowl of sauce and a section of bread(you’ll know what I mean if you’ve ever had it), and I would savor that taste of Virgilios bread til the pasta was served and the rest of the bread was on the table. This bread will always be a part of me, my life. The most awesome bread ever!

Here is a suggestion; when pies and cookies get old, throw them out. Seriously, people are paying good money for this stuff. There is nothing worse than getting home and realizing that everything you bought was already way past its prime. Oh yea, and btw what’s up with the precut cold cuts for sandwiches? What is this, Subway?!

So grateful for having such a great bread Baker here in Gloucester. Definitely a must have for any sandwich! The bread has a nice chewy crust. Hard to get home without eating some of it!

Going to Virgilio’s like stepping into the old world. It’s your neighorhood Italian deli and import store. It’s a standard stop for us on our way out of Gloucester to get some of the best sandwiches in town and eat them over at the cut. I only wish I could have Virgilio’s every week!

The Nor’easter veggie sub + a lemon ice followed with a cannoli chaser = heaven. Just love this place. Raised in NJ near lots of good Italian food and this place is tops. A+, just wish there was more room to sit outside.

Best subs I’ve had in a long time! My girls inhaled the prosciutto sub and I got two meals out of the chicken st Joseph which had a generous portion of breaded chicken cutlet with lettuce tomato and mayo. Bread is delicious and the carry various Italian foods.

Another business who needs a lesson in customer service. I got 2 turkey sandwiches with veggies and cheese. When I got home the sandwiches didn’t have turkey on them. I got back in my car and drive back to get the turkey I paid for! When I got to the counter I told the young lady what the problem was and she took them back to have turkey put in them. This store is small so I could hear what they were saying about the situation. After the sandwich maker declared that I did not order turkey the girl came back to me and said oh I have to charge you .50 for the turkey. Why would I drive back from my home to get turkey if I didn’t order it in the first place! As a business I would have just put the turkey in the sandwich to make sure the customer was happy. Not here. They made sure to take my money. What a joke. The food is good but the attitude of the people who work there is less than desirable. I am pretty sure their faces would not brake if they smiled once in a while. The food is great but the service SUCKS!

Of course for me no trip would be complete without hitting up an Italian Deli. Virgilio’s first opened in 1961. They are a full service bakery and Deli located right on Main Street. They make many different sandwiches but are known for The Saint Joseph, which is Genoa salami, German Bologna, Mortadella, cooked salami, imported Provolone, oil and vinegar. I ordered the South Western, sweet or hot Cappicola(I had sweet), Provolone Cheese, lettuce, olive salad, oil and oregano on semolina bread. This place was recommended to us by a family member that has lived in Gloucester for over 40 years. Basically take out with one tiny table inside and two on the outside. Like any good Italian Deli they also have an assortment of imported food items and also offered Portuguese Sweet Bread which is something that I have never seen at an Italian Deli before but, considering that Gloucester has a lot of Portuguese Immigrants is much appreciated.

I was delighted when I walked in, it felt like the sort of bakery you’d find in a city. The ordering system was a bit disorganized, but everyone who was waiting was polite and friendly with an, «oh no, after you.» mentality. Anyway, onto the food. I got the eggplant sandwich, being a vegetarian who loves eggplant, and it was delicious, the flavors subtle and tasty. I took a star off because it was soggy on one end. My family loved their subs, but also were sad that they were soggy. We also got some cannoli, and they were fantastic.

«The bread makes the meal.» That’s the honest truth! The Scali bread is magnificent & is the star of the St Joseph sub! Delicious! The super friendly deli staff makes this establishment ever better.

As an Italian, and a very picky one I must say… This is by far the best scali bread I’ve had including the north end! Finally, I’ve found a real Italian bakery on the north shore! I also purchased a loaf of their semolina kalamata olive bread which made for a great vessel for beach sandwiches the next day! My grandmother and brother loved their éclair and cannoli. So good!

why do their frozen lemon slushes taste so OLD? We got our $ back, so kudos. nice selection of jarred items and cookies. I don’t like the pizza, but the eggplant is OUTOFTHISWORLDDELISH, wish it was bigger. If you make the eggplant bigger I will be there every other day! You might want to clean that front step and the floor, there is an oily substance on it that old people like my friend’s grandparents almost fall down on every time!

The best place in Glosta to get fresh baked Italian bread and sandwiches. The recent menu expansion with the addition of cheese steak subs and more hot items is much welcomed.

Took a day trip to Gloucester and wanted something good for lunch. Walked around and followed some workmen into Virgilio’s. It was busy. That’s a good sign. I got an eggplant special(breaded & fried eggplant, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella, oil, and fresh basil) on a St. Joseph roll. It was awesome! They make the bread there fresh every day… and it tastes like it. The mozzarella was gloopy and delicious. The combination of flavors was excellent. Really enjoyed this. If I’m ever in Gloucester again, I’ll definitely go back.
