I can understand getting cold donuts at 11 a.m., but when I go there at 6:00 a.m. and get cold donuts, I have to say that I’m disappointed.

One otherwise boring Saturday morning my wife and I decided to find the best donut shop on Galveston Island. We purchased standard glazed donut holes from each establishment to compare. Shipley Donuts ranked an average mid of the pack when it came to our donut shop quest. There is really nothing there that stands apart. The menu contains the same basic assortment of donuts, kolaches, and drinks as all the other donut establishments here in Galveston but is a few dimes per item more expensive. The donut holes were okay, though the dough was the chewiest of all that we tried. Being that Shipley is a known franchise in the greater Houston area I assume that many out-of-towners go to Shipley because of little more then brand recognition. I think it was because of this that we experienced the rudest customers(not staff) during our brief time here although I can’t fault Shipley Donuts for this. Given the choice, however, I would drive to the other donut place on Broadway.

Donuts were good donuts… nothing super special. We did get a half dozen glazed, a pumpkin cake, a butterfly(cinnamon roll), and a blueberry jelly filled donut. We got a bag of holes to eat on the way back. We went to the Donut Palace the day before and their glazed were much better. Also this place could’ve cared less if we bought anything here. Between Dawn Donuts or the Palace… I would rate this place a distant third place.

Super yummy donuts… had a chocolate frosted, and strawberry frosted, at .70 cents they are a steal. The associate that looks like Selena was super friendly, and provided wonderful customer service. Definately a must stop on a trip to Galveston.

Again disappointed! WHATDONUTSHOPRUNSOUTOFPRODUCTAT11:30AMON A SUNDAY!!! Seems to be the modus operandi for this franchise. So I’ll keep punishing you with bad reviews and turning around with NO purchase when you don’t have on hand the MOST popular items!!! NO! I don’t want your stupid bland cake donut instead!!!

The donuts we had at Shipley’s were delicious. We would go back there in a heartbeat. I had maple nut; my husband had an apple fritter that was filled with apple goodness. He also had a blueberry filled donut which was adequately filled. He also has a chocolate donut still waiting to be eaten. It looks Wonderful.

So the morning after a night of heavy drinking… This is how all the good stories start, right? We were in rough shape in need of some food type substance. That’s when our friends suggested kolaches, to which I responded ko-lach-whats? With that statement my fate was sealed and the destiny of the universe was forever changed. My friends decided it was time to pop my kolache cherry. We picked up 2 dozen for our rental house full of hung over friends. Shipleys explained that they offer call ahead service if we’re ever in town and in need of a lot of kolaches in the future. At first sight it looks like a hotdog bun, which didn’t seem so exciting. But that first bite was start of a whole new guilty pleasure. The sausage inside is so tasty! The bread covering was a little much, so I tore some of mine off and it was good to go.

Hot, delicious, fresh, light and fluffy donuts served by a very friendly staff. There seemed to be a lot of regulars so we knew it must be good as soon as we walked in. We ordered a dozen mixed donuts and just let the staff pick out the flavors. Took them back to our condo and our group had them gone within minutes! Would definitely recommend this place. The donuts are different from other places… definitely not the dense cake donuts that are sold other places, but a very good, unique donut!

I’ve been coming to this Shipley’s location since I was a toddler. The donut holes and sausage and cheese kolaches hold a special place in my heart. The staff is friendly and remembers their regular customers. Galveston is lucky to have such a great donut place!

I believe in the diversity of people and that there is a perfect donut for everyone. That being said I agree with the prior reviewer that the failed donuts at this Shipley’s are just OK. The cake donuts are actually substandard(the batter is slightly too thick and the oil temperature too low to produce the ideal crispy crunch). The cinnamon twists and raised donuts however are great. That being said, the star of the Shipley’s show are the kolaches. The bread dough is perfect. The sausage is amazing. A day old Shipley’s kolache is great. A fresh warm one is a dream come true. Having kolaches for breakfast at this Shipley’s at least once each time I come to Galveston is now a tradition.

I have a confession to make. I don’t think that Shipley’s is the best to happen to mankind. GASP! Oh, the horror! In fact, I don’t even think it is the best thing to happen to breakfast. Blasphemy you say? Perhaps. But today’s experience has not swayed my decision. Let’s get something straight. It is really hard to screw up donuts. I mean, you really have to try. And since the process is generally the same wherever you go, you’d think that you could expect about the same thing regardless of the type of donut shop. And for the most part, you’d be correct. However, I happen to be a filled donut kinda gal. I especially love the crème filling that just oozes out. And if it doesn’t ooze, it isn’t done right. What’s worse is getting almost halfway through the donut and not coming across any of this oozing business. I mean, I’d just figured that they’d forgotten to fill the thing. Nope, they’d just been stingy. The rest of the donuts fared better, but I’m still not impressed by the not so great customer service, long lines, and somewhat elevated prices. I doubt I’ll be back to this location, especially with so many great mom and pop joints in the area.
