Went here right as they opened, so the line was small. Is this place worth the hype? Probably not. For the ~$ 10 you spend on a cheesesteak, you can get a sandwich that is 10x better from Delassandro’s. The one saving grace here is that Jim’s hands down has the best bread in the city. If I put put Delassandro’s meat with Jim’s bread, I’d be in heaven. But not Jim’s onions. the onions here are big and seriously wtf is up with these places not sauteing their onions enough?! My biggest complaint is the small portion of steak you get. I know they can do what they want since the line will still be out the door, but the small amount of meat you get is what really kills it for me here. Get a cheesesteak here with onions and whiz. For the whiz, they take your bread and put a huge spread of whiz on it, then top it with beef and onions, and then finish it off with MORE whiz. It was amazing that the bread didn’t get ridiculously soggy from it all. Worth trying once just to get the heavenly bread, but it’s not worth the wait

Before I came to Philly, I was in a barber shop in my native Chicago talking about my upcoming trip to Philly and one of the guys in the shop overheard me talking about I have to see which is better Geno’s or Pat’s! We interrupted my conversation with my barber to tell me Jim’s on South Street was where I needed to be for a good steak. Well he was right as this is the #1 cheesesteak I had on my trip to Philly. Me and my buddy made it over shortly before they closed after having awesome cocktails @ Franklin Bar and being denied access into Steve’s. We noticed a line going on and figured we would wait as we had no where to be on a late Thursday nite and not to mention we were starving. I ordered a steak with whiz, peppers and onions and that shit was awesome! The steak was cut perfectly and the bread was magnificent. We even had some beer to wash the goodness down. The peeps that worked there were cool as we were able to hang out with them as they were closing… they finally tossed us out at some point

My husband and I stopped here before heading back to Jersey… Ordered a cheese steak with whiz and onions. It was delish!!! The cooks appear to enjoy what they do and are really nice. Definitely returning and recommend!

Came here at the recommendation of a friend and some locals to try my first really Philly cheese steak. Jim’s definitely had a fun atmosphere and the workers were great. When I showed up the line wasn’t as bad as I was preparing myself for. It was just starting to form out the door, but it moved pretty fast. While you wait make sure you know exactly what you want to order that way you’ll be ready for the guys when it’s your turn. As I’m not a fan of peppers and onions, I just got steak and whiz. The meat is chopped up which makes for easy eating and wasn’t overly greasy. I do think they need to season it a little bit more just to add some extra flavor, but all in all it was a successful trip and I’d be back! Also it’s cash only!

This is one of the better steakhouses in Philly. However, it is located in the bar area. Therefore, when I went at 1AM, it was a long line for the philly. I smelled like onions by the time I got out. Besides the atmosphere, I didn’t like how the whiz was simply spread like butter. I don’t feel as if I really got a philly CHEESE steak. Overall, not bad, just pretty hectic for a spread of butter… I mean whiz.

Great cheesesteak with nice crispy bread! I cannot compare them to the other ones as this one was my first cheesesteak ever. I asked the cook which one I should get and he made me one with whiz and onions. Yummy! It is nice to be able to see him cook and prepare the meat and onions, and vegetables in front of your eyes.

We traveled 2 hours to bask in this temple of meaty, cheesy goodness. Get whiz. Get onions. Get it right. Oh and add a super cheap beer to round out what will undoubtedly be the heftiest and most satisfying meal of your day. Jim’s is a Philly staple — can’t miss it.

Best steaks I’ve had. Make sure you have order ready or they will skip you. Cash only, plan waiting about 15 minutes for a steak, well worth the wait though

Every time I’m in Philly I need to make a stop at Jim’s. It’s fast, delicious and fun. A landmark for sure. Cheesesteak with Wiz. Nothin else to it. CASHONLY so be prepared. This place can get extremely busy.

The cheesesteaks were so good we ordered one to go and ate it for dessert as we waddled through the historic district! Simple menu, they know what they’re good at and stick to it. Food comes up fast. Ordered it like the natives do: one whiz with(one cheesesteak — or in our case, 4 and then returned for another one — with Cheese Whiz and grilled onions.) 5 total, no drinks, just under $ 50. No frills seating upstairs. Look on the walls and see the famous who have dined there. With the number of signed head shots, it makes one wonder how many celebrities carry a tote full of 8×10s and sharpie at the ready at all times.

Late review Love the staff here and speed of service but the cheesesteaks just didn’t cut it for me. The only read I’d go back is for the customer service.

What happened to the cheesesteaks here??? Just came here after Copa across the street and ordered 4 hoagies. Smaller Hoagie Rolls. Less Meat and you give one small container of hot peppers for 4 hoagies? Slow as hell service! Won’t be making the trip here anymore

This place was recommended by a Philly person we met while touring Monticello(Jefferson’s home) in Virginia. We are in from Fort Worth touring the east coast this summer. We wanted a great cheesesteak experience. This place did not disappoint! I got one with whiz(melted cheese), mushrooms and onions. OMGosh! It was great. I wanted a second. I shared with my son. My wife and daughter got one with peppers and whiz. They loved theirs. I highly recommend this place and would return if not leaving to NY City.

I’d say it’s just another cheesesteak. Definitely a tourist trap, but in the end most cheesesteaks are on a similar platform(with some exceptions on either end), and Jim’s doesn’t buck the trend in that regard.

Jim’s Steaks are tourist trash. The counter staff are miserable, the cheese is unmelted, and their onions are dirt-brown and flaccid. Their biggest claim to fame is the line of schmucks that snakes outside, drawn to this pathetic bandwagon because they just don’t know any better. Their only redeeming quality is the fact that they serve beer — and boy did I need one after wasting my time and money here. Forget this place.

In town just for the weekend, we hired a driver to take us for cheesesteaks from our hotel on the outskirts of town. We planned on going to Pats but took our drivers recommendation to come here. Can’t say I know how it compares to Genos or Pats, but we really enjoyed it. Line went out the door but moved along pretty quickly. I got wiz with onion and peppers and my hubs got provolone with onion and peppers. Lots of people in the tips section of Unilocal advised to get extra wiz. I should have taken their advice, GETEXTRAWIZ! Only reason I docked a star, but honestly, this place was great. The flavors were amazing, even the peppers by themselves were yummy and flavorful. $ 25 for two hoagies and two drinks, pretty reasonable. Kid at the register seemed a bit frazzled. Forgot to give us our change. We had to wait for him to finish the next order to get the register open. Oh well, can’t blame him, the place was nuts. Don’t forget, they are CASHONLY. But they have an ATM by the front door. Seating upstairs, head to the back to find the stairs. Luckily, despite how packed the place was we were able to find seats without a problem. Certainly worth stopping by if you are looking for a good Philly. Husband said mine, with the wiz was better.

The cheesesteak is one of the better spots in Philly. If you’re hungry and up for a challenge, you should complete the South St challenge — Jim’s cheesesteak wrapped around a slice of. Lorenzo’s. This is a bucket list item they everyone needs to try. You must wrap the cheesesteak with a slice of pizza. You cannot eat each item separately! Tips for successfully completing the challenge: — I usually prefer whiz with, but go with just whiz for the challenge. — Get a drink — lots of bread and crust will make you thirsty. — Wrap the pizza tightly around the cheesesteak. I stick the crust where the meat is to have a piece of crust in every bite. I’m sure there are various techniques!

After eating my first Philly cheesesteak at Spataro’s which was underwhelming, Jim’s tasted much better– greesy and flavorful but what really set it apart was — 1. The steak was nicely shredded which made it more flavorful and 2. The condiments that they give on the side– charred black roasted chilies and pickles elevated the flavor all the more. A quick service ensures you don’t stay hungry too long!

My buddy from UPenn told me Jim’s was the best place to get a cheesesteak in Philly and it sure did not disappoint. Located about half a mile from the sites, easy to walk to. Cash only. More of a restaurant set up and they have indoor seating. Be ready for long long lines. Food does comes out pretty quick though. They are made to order. Mushroom Steak — $ 8.35 — Tender steak, melted cheese, and sauteed mushrooms and onions, what more to ask for. The bread was not to soggy or dry. Very well made sandwich. A lot better then Pat’s and Geno’s.

Food was great, I got the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with an egg on it. It was really amazing. But the SERVICE was amazing but there was just this one guy with gel hair thinking he was a guido anyway he made the experince HORRIBLE, EXTREMELYRUDE, NOEDUCATIONORCLASSWHAT’S SOEVER. Would I come here again, probably to see how fast they fired him after them reading this review and other people’s reviews as well before mine.

I don’t get it. Bland meat, soggy bun. Even with peppers, pickles, onions, and salt, I remember now why I haven’t had a cheesesteak in nearly 40 years. Nice staff, patrons fair, hence the 2 stars. Be prepared to wait, don’t go upstairs without your food. No toilet. Cash only. Parking will eventually appear.

A trip to Philly would not be complete without a stop at Genos for a cheese steak… or so I thought! The front desk at our hotel recommended Jims and said it was not the touristy place that Genos is; it is where the locals go. We decided to give it a try and cheese steaks will never be the same! Located in the trendy Society Hill section of the city, Jims is located on a corner and features a cool black and silver art deco style. The line goes relatively quick. Once inside, there is another wrapping line like at an amusement park. The food is cooked right in front of you. The people working at Jims seem like they genuinely love their job. I asked if every evening was as crazy as the night we were there and we were told that it pretty much is! The day we went was national cheese steak day(who knew???) Our food was amazing!!! A bonus is the upstairs seating with huge windows overlooking the busy streets. No eating outside in the cold! Though I would have preferred a bit of seasoning on my steak, it was cooked to perfection and served with pride which made it perfect in my opinion!

Yes we liked Jim’s. Nice meat, bread was pretty good, we got them American, without. Neat and clean grille area, decent eating area upstairs. The steaks were pretty good and were the last in our weekend challenge of steaks during our stay in Philadelphia. The atmosphere on South Street is nice so just strolling around the area where this is located is decent. So during our stay we got to 5 places, Jim’s, Joe’s, Sonny’s, Pat’s, and Geno’s. Wish we could have done Tony Luke’s and we heard about the Prince of Steaks, that would have made it 7, but next time. I’m not so sure this beats Geno’s or Pat’s, infact while Geno’s and Pat’s also got 4 stars, you could say Jim’s runs with them, but Sonny’s beat them all, and Pat’s was taking Jim’s in round 11. Jim’s beats Joe’s though. Jim’s meat was chopped fairly well and we saw it right from the quick order line. The bread was soft and chewy but not overly soft in a negative way. The cheese was ok. We liked the taste. So in the end for this final review it went 1. Sonny’s 2. Pat’s 3. Geno’s 4. Jim’s 5. Joe’s

I don’t know how this place has an average rating of 3.5 stars, because I definitely give it the full 5 stars. Definitely get the cheez whiz. I liked mine with peppers and onions and hot peppers on the side that I could add in. The meat and the bread were both super tasty. I really appreciated that the bread was so soft. Next time I’m in Philly, I will definitely be back. The line gets super long, but it’s worth the wait!

In the great cheesesteak battlefront which Is Philadelphia, Pats and genos are probably most notable, however many people will tell you, jims is indeed the best of the three… Honestly, I want as big a fan of Jims as all my buddies were, however, I’ve been to many spots across the city and none of those three are actually my favorites. This all being said, Jims is just okay and has faded over the years. It’s tough to say which is the best, some are nice and cheesy, some have a lot of steak, some have great bread… Others have unique flavor… It’s tough to come up with the overall best. I’ve spent days trying to compare, but what I really need is all of them to ship me a sandwich at the exact same time, and compare side by side, then roll me out the door and put my phone in my fat fingers and I’ll review until I die. Jims is ok, not the greatest.

If you live in Philly, it’s more than likely you’ve been asked that age-old question. «Where’s the best Philly cheese steak?» Brushing aside any distaste one might have for immediately associating Philly with cheese steaks, if you don’t answer Pat’s or Geno’s, you’re off to a great start. And while there are plenty of mom and pop shops offering great cheese steaks, if you settle on either Jim’s, John’s Roast Pork, or Ishkabibble’s, you’re a winner in my book! Jim and Millie starting serving their sandwiches out of their West Philly row home in the 1930’s. From there, the business was sold to Bill Proetto in the 70’s and settled at the current South Street institution. The cheese steaks are so popular that business has now expanded to Northeast Philly and Springfield, PA as well. Lines regularly go out the door, but even so, the wait is usually less than 10 minutes. Efficiency they have down pat. Cheesesteak [$ 8.60], ‘wit, whiz, and mushrooms [$ 0.75] For a proper cheese steak, you start with great bread. Amoroso’s is a standout — the bread is crusty, pliant, and a great vessel for the nicely seasoned and chopped steak. The GF got hers ‘wit onions(you can get them grilled, raw, or both), creamy Whiz, and plenty of roasted mushrooms. Made for a juicy and messy bite. Cheesesteak [$ 8.60], ‘wit, whiz, and American cheese [$ 1] I love going cheesy so I had them make mine with both creamy American and a healthy dollop of Cheese Whiz. It may look messy, but the roll does a great job of containing this beast of a feast. You’ll leave the shop smelling like grilled onions and steak for days, but you’ll have a belly full of a cheese steak that does Philly proud.
