county store in the middle of the woods what more can one ask for. Stopped into the Zaynate Creek Market and Deli while exploring the Santa Cruz hills. The owner is friendly and talkative. All the basics one would need from a small market are there.

The days of the old country store are a thing of the past. Remarkably, this little Zayante Market is hanging in there with convenience, quaintness, and character. The market seems to reminisce the long gone days of the railroad when this area was bustling with summer fun. I stopped here on my bike ride over the hill via Upper Zayante Rd. Upon entering the market it looked like every other neighborhood store stocked with gum, beer, candy, milk, and disposable lighters, but looking more closely it turns into a complete mini-wal mart. They even sell the local wine from Zayante Vineyard up the street. There is a deli with a good selection of really cheap sandwiches. Where can you get a sandwich for $ 3.99? Ironically the ‘Poor Boy’ was the most expensive sandwich on the list. I settled for a Cliff bar and a bottle of Mate’ Endurance and was on my way…

One of the WORST sandwiches I have ever paid for. I ordered the«California Club» after reading the only review on this market. First of all, you can’t call it a California club and have no avocado on it. The bread was the cheapest quality store bought sliced wheat. The turkey was rubbery packaged meat, as was the cheese. The lettuce was like the shitty yellow chunks you get in a bagged salad that you end up throwing away. I will never buy another shitty $ 6 sandwich from here. The store has a pretty sparse selection of everything. And is really too bad because I just moved into the area and had high hopes.
