The observatory serves as a great icon of Big Bear, right there on the lakeside. Funny story, my parents used to tell my sisters and I when we were little that it was a mermaid house. Every time a wave would crash in the water we would say we saw a mermaid tail. That lasted about two years — but then my 15 year old sister still believed it was true. So even told her friends out on the lake. Yeah, not the brightest kid.
