The food is pretty good. Many of the food items do taste like Oaxacan food. The plates I would recommend are the tlayudas. They have mental with different meats, but I prefer the tasajo one. Plenty of flavor and will definitely satisfy your hunger. Although the food is not bad, I really have to complain about the customer service. It has gone down my a lot. Few years back I remember going there often and would get nice service but now the food takes ages to come out. If you only have 1 hour to eat, it’s definitely not best place to eat. You have to wait for someone to come out and take your order, wait a long time to get your order, and even wait more time to pay for your food. I love hot chocolate and coffee. But even that can take 15 minutes to come out even with you being the only client. A few times I’ve gone with my wife and family and had to change orders because they«did not have» the plate available. «We don’t have coffee any more» «there is no atole» «I will owe you the nopal, we don’t have any». I have gotten many excuses for not getting my food. I say excuses because when the person who serves goes back to ask the cooks, I have actually hear them say they did not want to prepare the item and tell the server to say they have ran out. I have no doubt that if they were to reduce the time it takes the food out and increase their customer service I would give them at least a 4.

I went for the first time today to try out the restaurant. They were out of fried Tilapia but suggested a slightly more expensive unnamed breaded fish. The filet was thin and so salty I could barely eat it. The rice had a cooked hair in it. I showed the waiter and he apologized but did not offer to replace the rice or give me any discount. 2 stars for the homemade tortillas and chips, but beware of the main dish.

Friendly service, excellent menu, and even better tasting food. I highly recommend eating here if you are craving Mexican food. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food and the flavors. I will definitely return & bring a group along :)

I’ve been here a few times with my Spanish class, and it’s not bad at all. We would always try to sneak crickets and hot chiles into people’s food to see their reaction… The horchata is exemplary and the meat(which I tragically forgot the name of) is intensely flavorful. It feels authentic, at least to a relatively non-cultured person such as myself.

Beautiful food and people. The horchata brought me back to life. Words can NOT describe how amazing the black beans are… it was nostalgic moment, for a minute I was reminded of my grandmother and her cooking. I love the mariachis-totally made the experience super awesome with’a sprinkle of smiles

Wow! Just wow… Wife and I came here because after attending the Escondido Tamale Festival yesterday(11÷14÷15) and not having a chance to even eat a tamale because of crazy 2 hours long lines we seen the booth for El Tajete selling delicious looking tlyucas so we thought we would come try it out. So we read the mixed reviews. The consensus is that El Tejate has really great food but lousy service. I get it, we waited a good minute to get our food but our waitress was super sweet, the owners daughter and though she was busy she did really offer good service. Yes, I had to get up from my chair to ask one of the other waitresses to get us a glass of water but it’s really not a big deal because we feel entitled to have services come at our every beckoning? If you expect not to wait awhile for your home made authentic food to arrive then you will get frustrated. If you want to experience some amazing, flavorful and perfectly seasoned dishes then eat here. Our waitress recommended the«parrillada complenta» since it was out first time. Order this if it is your first time eating here, I don’t want to ruin it but it serves two and runs $ 27.99 not including drinks. You can also order it for 5 – 6 people if you have a larger group. It is amazing, a good combination of different dishes without venturing into to friend incest dishes know for this region of Mexico. Horchata has nuts and a slush of prickly pear which is a must try if you have never had this. So good, it made me shed some tears of joy.

About two months ago I traded in my raging obsession for Tex-mex and and Tejano food and moved to SoCal. I never realized that I would soon fall in love with Oaxacan food and call it even. Okay so I still crave flautas and the green sauce at La Tapatia but I’ve come to terms with my loss. My boyfriend actually introduced me to this place and since then I’ve nonstop asked about our next visit. In our visits here we’ve had the tlayudas, mole, empanadas, camarones, and the tamales. Everything has been amazing! Yes, the service can be lacking at times but the food is worth it. In addition the atole and the speciality Horchata are worth checking out! The food all tastes really fresh and the regular patrons only verify how authentic the food is. Drop by if you’re in the neighborhood!

I have been told by friends that this place had good authentic food. I have gone twice and let’s just say I’m not going a third time. Food as many have pointed out is really good. Service. Eh. This last time I went our waitress was actually good but towards the end we kept waiting for our check. Finally we approached the counter confused wondering if maybe we needed to go pay at the register this time. It seems that our waitress had made a mistake with our check and someone else’s. She was new and in training. Let me just say that she had been one of the best waitress we’ve had but the owner decided to let out her frustration towards this poor woman. It seemed to me that the owner couldn’t figure out how to fix the mix up of the checks and instead of remaining calm she continued to humiliate this poor woman in front of us. Continued to tell her that future wise she needed to get one of them to help to avoid this kind of mistake with a horrible tone of voice. I understand what the owner was trying to say but she was being really rude to her staff and continued to do so until I finally had enough and told her it was very unprofessional of her. The waitress was almost in tears. What the heck. I felt so bad for her. I told the owner that future wise she needed to privately talk to the waitress and stop screaming at her. According to the owner she wasn’t screaming. Bullshit. Anyway. Good food not worth me coming back. Also, not a fan of their karaōke. It’s so loud you can’t hear anything people are trying to tell you. There’s kids in the room and their song selection is not appreciate for them.

AUTHENTICOAXAQUENCUISINE… it was my brothers birthday. We were the first ones there that afternoon. We all ordered drinks and entrées. The Food Was Fabulous I Had The«Chopped Pork With Mushroom And onions» my boyfriend had the torta. Uuummmmaaaagaaaawd it was so goood. The meat drizzled in mushroom and onion juices, the rice on point and the black beans were flavorful and didn’t lack salt or seasoning. Definitely coming back next oaxaqueño craving. *** I believe the tortillas are hand made, another oomph to the oaxaqueño decadence***

Authentic Oaxacan food: tasajo, tlyudas, mole, tamales in banana leaves and much more. I was in Oaxaca six months ago and the food at El Tejate was a trip back. Very authentic and delicious. I had a tlyuda and my wife had chicken enchiladas with mole negro. Both were flavorful and delicious. Service is also authentic… the waiter takes your order, brings your food, and then disappears. The table is yours for the evening and it becomes difficult to find the waiter. That’s Oaxaca. Sit back, eat slowly, and enjoy the music. This isn’t about table turn, so don’t complain. The only real criticism is that there was only one salsa, where in Oaxaca there would always be 3 or more. The kitchen staff seemed to have a lot of fun and was laughing and smiling. This is real Mexican food. I will make many happy returns.

My co worker recommended to this restaurant to me and I am so happy she did! It has taken me a long time to find a restaurant with the«homemade» that this restaurant has. it is by no doubt authentic oxacan food, I have had the entomatadas, tlayuda, and my all time favorite enchiladas de mole negro. also the platanos fritos and horchata with the fruit is AMAZING. it’s a little bit pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. the only downside is that you have to spend $ 20 or else they charge you to use your card and that’s always an inconvenience

Terrible service, only one cook and two waitress. Orders were backed up and customers including ourselves were a bit disturbed by the lack of attention and organization. Orders were starting to be placed at the wrong tables. We waited and waited for our food to be served. FINALLY a second chef arrived. The Bathrooms where overflowing with papers and the toilet seat was broken. To top it of my whole family got food poisoning. The whole nine yards body aches, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. NEVERGOINGBACK.

Heard good things about«El Tejate» authentic Oaxacan food. It was a full house when we got there so i couldn’t wait to eat. I’ve waited 12 minutes for glasses and utinsils before at different restaurant but never 20 minutes and still had to flag down the waitresses multiple times, now i understand when you’re busy, you’re busy but how can you not served water or utensils to your guests. Bottom line food is so-so and over priced not to mention service was horrible today i may give this place another chance at a later time when they’re not as busy if that was todays case. They had a nice Mexican trio that played mean acoustic for tips.

Probably one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in all of San Diego and that’s saying something, considering the fact that we have like a billion of them. Have you ever had fried grasshoppers and worms? Well, try it here, they’re actually pretty good. Not too many Mexican restaurants serve the kinds of food this restaurant serves. What’s also surprising is, not too many Mexican restaurants in SD serves«Mole,» which is the most Mexican sauce there is(it’s been said that 99% of Mexicans has eaten a Mole dish in their lifetime) I love the fact that whenever I’m here, the waitress speaks to me in Spanish and I respond back in Spanish(they don’t know that I’m 100% Asian, Filipino to be exact. Those Spanish classes in college really paid off). They have all kinds of mole here such as rojo(red), negro(black), amarillo(yellow), verde(green), etc. My favorite is negro or the black one because it’s sweet. I love their«enchiladas de mole negro.» Also, their«tlayuda con mole negro» is the bomb. Tlayuda is a popular street food in Mexico. It’s literally a Mexican version of a pizza. Order their chapulines(fried grasshoppers) and add it to your tlayuda and you’ll love it. Trust me, that’s how they do it in Mexico(the southern part of the country especially) Definitely recommend coming here if you wanna experience another side of Mexican cuisine

A new Mexican friend told me about this restaurant with food typichal from Oaxaca. As I am not familiarized with the gastronomy of that Mexican area, of course I was very interested in knowing more and try it out, especially the chapulines. They were ran out of these little beats and we ate(3 of us) these dishes to share: tlayuda con cecina tamal de puerco mole envuelta en hoja de plátano quesadilla con flor de calabaza for drinks some chocolate drink that looks like a soup for the guys, and aguas frescas of tamarindo and jamaica for the girls. Very abundant and delicious lunch hour, and yes, as expected, super colorful place, very idyllic Mexican imaginery. Service was very nice and the server let us try a generous portion of a sweet drink made out of pumpkin and cinnamon(too sweet and heavy for me, looked like a meal by itself:). Will come back a Friday night for the music and try out more food.
