My encounter with Elk Grove Home Furnishings was bizarre and unexpected, but I think it has a happy enough ending! Over the past week or so I have been acquiring a number of cheap, necessary items off of craigslist to furnish the new pad(bye bye wire cages, hello bookshelves!). The last item I wanted initially was a storage ottoman so that all of our awesome but massive video game equipment could be neatly hidden instead of sprawling all over the floor. We found a cheap ottoman in the«furniture — by owner» section, with a name, phone number, comment that it was never used, etc. I emailed the guy, got his address, got the hours he was available, got some cash. Cool. After making the trek down to Elk Grove, my GPS claimed the guy we called lived in the middle of a commercial strip mall. After driving around a bit we confirmed the address he’d given us was a CVS. We called the guy, sure he’d given us the wrong directions. We got the guy on the phone, and it turned out we were in the right place! There was a small furniture store right by the CVS that had the ottoman. No wonder this dude was available all day — he worked at the damn store! In our confused stupor we almost just left, but really the store itself wasn’t half bad. It had a typical sterile quality of any furniture store, but they had a lot of inexpensive, decent-looking quality furniture of all kinds. The storage ottoman was the most decent-looking cheap one we’d seen. We ended up buying it and heading home. They lose points for their somewhat, ahem, bizarre business tactics, but I had no problems with the actual store outside of their weird salesman.
