First visit here… came to have dinner before a PaintNite. Wow the Portuguese mussels were outstanding. Made a meal of them with the frites and they were delicious. Service was great! Atmosphere was pleasant. Would like to return to try a different variety of the muscles.

I have to admit to being a long time patron of the Red Stripe restaurants, going back to their first opening on Providence’s East Side, and including the short lived spot in a Narragansett shopping center. But, it has never been my first choice. Instead, often a back-up plan, if the place I really wanted to try was too busy or crowded, Red Stripe was often a solid stand in. Reliable, dependable, but never amazing. That stops today. There is something special going on in this place in East Greenwich. It is really quite a bit better than I seem to remember. On a recent night, where my first stop down the street was too busy to seat us for over an hour, we ended up here, and it turned out to be so much more than a substitute. The service here, even on a weekend night where its fairly busy, and people are crowded in the entry hall, is really quite personable and efficient. A friendly hostess, a quick and ready valet out front, a smiling bartender with a drink at the ready; its a really well assembled and fine working bunch. The food, no less impressive. Rustic, continental fare, sometimes with an upscale twist, looses nothing of its identity in a clean and simple presentation. This week I had my favorite dish here yet, the Duck Confit Shepherd’s Pie. Fluffy, creamed, mashed potatoes with an oven torched crust were layered over a filling of finger long sections of braised duck breast and thigh. Along side the soft, rich pieces of duck, were just softened carrots and peas, bathed in a stew of Cabernet and jus. Wintertime was made for meals such as these. Anyhow, its pretty certain that my next trip to Red Stripe won’t be by mistake.

Attention: Red Stripe Manager: Sadly, our last three experiences here have been not so good. We are regulars and love to come here every week because it’s friendly and convenient and the food is usually very good. Last three times, not so much. About a month ago after dining here, I became quite ill immediately after arriving home, although my husband, who had totally different items, did not.(I had a Cobb salad and the Portebella mushroom appetizer). I figured I’d let that pass and not call to complain, because, what could they have done about it anyway. Next time there I just had tomato soup with a plain grilled cheese sandwich. The soup was fabulous — it always is. The grilled cheese was thoroughly drenched in melted butter — way too greasy. It tasted good, for what is not to like about butter and melted cheese? In my opinion the sandwich should have been crispier, browner, and not so wet and greasy. But I ate half and again, did not complain, figuring that this was how Red Stripe’s patrons liked their grilled cheese sandwiches. We went back again last week and I was sure hoping for a better meal. I was trying to go more on the light side again, ordering soup and an app, which I frequently do if it’s a week night. The chicken empanadas sounded good, as did the onion soup. I asked for both to be served at the same time, and they were. Since the soup was so hot I tried the empanadas first. I didn’t realize they’d be deep fried, since I have always had them baked with a nice shiny egg washed crust, and a delectable spicy filling. However, these had been deep fried and that was okay. When I took the first bite I realized they had been cooked in oil that was not allowed to get hot enough. The dough was mushy and literally drenched through in oil, to the end that I couldn’t even make out the mushy tasteless filling. I had to push my plate away because they were really bad, and really disappointing. The soup was as advertised, but in my mind too sweet. But that is a matter of taste and I cannot fault them on this. The waitress asked me if she could bring me a substitute for the empanadas and suggested the risotto and butternut squash app. I said yes without thinking, but when they arrived I remembered my earlier portobello mushroom appetizer also had that type of squash in it. It seemed like a mound of rice, mashed squash and cheese dipped in panko had been deep fried in the same cold oil and I guess those aren’t my favorite flavors. I could not take more than one bite. Seriously I do normally love the food here. I asked the waitress if the kitchen staff had changed,(she said no) and finally confessed my last three visits had been disappointing. The kitchen seemed to be more than very much off its game lately. She said no, it was the very same chef, so there you go. Maybe he doesn’t like his job anymore. I don’t know what it is — but I will give this eatery one more chance, someday, since it’s been one of my favorite restaurants from when they they opened. The waitress said she would let the manager know. Having said all of this, I should add that Kevin and Kayla, the bartenders, are very much missed, and I hope the bar staff soon gets more experience because K & K set the bar high(haha, pun intended !). The bar staff, however, could not possibly have anything to do with the quality of food of late though.(My husband’s fish and chips were also not RS’s finest moment last time either). I think some quality control is needed right about now — or some oversight and FOODTASTING by the manager or owner or both. I sincerely hope that whatever needs to be done to return the food here to its former glory gets done. East Greenwich loves Red Stripe, and Red Stripe does a fabulous business in EG, but please don’t get complacent over that.

My fiancé and I stopped in for Restaurant Week over the weekend for the first time and i’m glad we did. I had the French Onion Soup, Steak Frites with Gorganzola Butter, and the Apple Hand Pie and everything was delicious. He ordered the calamari to start, which was great and came with a killer dipping sauce, the Duck Confit Shepard’s Pie, which we thought lacked a bit of gravy or sauce but the mashed potatoes were excellent, and the Chocolate Chunk Bread Pudding, which had good flavor but was a little dry(I like bread pudding to be more custardy). All in all, it was a great meal and I look forward to our next visit. Next time I think we’ll try the mussels!

This place is great. I really liked their spot in Providence and I am really happy they moved right down the road in East Greenwich. My girlfriend and I got a couple times a month. The food is great, the prices are great, and the serve is pretty good. This place has a unique ability to be comfortable when you want to get all dressed up, or if you want to be more on the casual side. I would highly recommend trying this place; everything on the menu is delicious; especially the short rib or the seasonal lobster roll.

Finally stopped in to Red Stripe — EG for dinner this past weekend. I had been to the Providence location many times and have always enjoyed the food. I love the new location. For one thing, it’s closer to my home. For another, I like the ambiance of the place. I sat at a high top in the bar area, casual and not too noisy. The service was great and the food even better. The server recommended the goat cheese salad, which was delicious. Lots of flavor, perfect amount of dressing and yummy goat cheese. She also gave me a recommendation on the wine. And it was a great compliment to the salad. I look forward to returning in the near future for mussels and pommes frites(love the many delicious options on the menu)!!!

Went here for a business dinner and was not disappointed. Michaela(sp?) was our server at the bar and she did an exceptional job. She was very attentive to our little group and very friendly. The drinks were perfect for each of us– not watered down and not too heavy on the pour either. Clearly she knows what she is doing. The food we had there was very good as well. Reasonably priced on the higher end. Ordered frites which they offer many variations of. Both the seasoning as well as the dipping sauce was truly unique. The chef did a great job with the pairing(we did the Moroccan). The paella was also very tasty. Many places make you order for more than one person. Here, they do individual options, and it was really one of the better paella I have ever had, either individual size or for a while table. Generous on both the portion as well as the flavor and meats, the dish really paired well with the wine that our waiter suggested. The staff did a great job here. Would recommend this for a fun family meal. There were several families there, and it isn’t an intimate setting. Maybe even a first date if you like things a bit more lively. Enjoy!

I have now been to both locations a few times and I have to say that this is such a great restaurant! The food is delicious and feels fancy, but for very reasonable prices. I recently took my in laws and parents from out of town to the EG location, and we had a fantastic meal. We shared the Red Stripe Salad between 6 people and it was more than enough! I had the short rib beef stroganoff, and it was to die for! The creamy mushroom sauce was lavishly rich and the beef was so tender and juicy I could cut it with my fork. Another highlight at the table was the pumpkin ravioli in a maple sauce that was delicious as well. They have a great wine/beer/cocktail selection and the staff goes above and beyond. They also frequently change their menu to highlight the best produce for the season. I think this restaurant is the best bang for your buck in both Providence and EG! It has the feel of a fancy restaurant, without burning a hole in your wallet!

I went for dinner with my mom, who recently celebrated a milestone birthday and had received a gift certificate as a gift. I will say that I never knew that this restaurant was even there before I saw the certificate(they also have 2 other restaurants in Prov., another Red Stripe, and The Mill Tavern). My initial thought about it was not so great, I’m not a big beer person, but I do know Red Stripe is a Jamaican Lager. I was very surprised when I went to their website and looked at their menu. The menu had a nice mix of food, and thankfully no Caribbean fare(I’m not a fan). As I did this research on my phone when I scrolled passed the reservations, I decided to call. I didn’t know how big the dinning room was or how busy they would be. As it turned out, reservations were really not necessary; the dinning room was a good size, and they were not overly crowded. The hostess who seated us was very friendly and asked if we would prefer a booth or a table. I always like when they do that, as I prefer a table. So far things were looking great. Our waitress came to the table, what seemed like mere moments after the hostess left, and asked if we needed more time. Generally, I felt kind of rushed(she was also training someone, which may have been a factor) My mom was thinking of having the fish & chips, but was concerned about the pickled jalapeño tartar sauce being too spicy for her. The waitress said it really wasn’t that spicy at all, and said she would brings some to the table for her to try. The waitress gets huge points for that, as I have been to places were the waitstaff tries to pressure you into it. I did wonder why she said it wasn’t really that spicy when the menu makes a point of it being jalapeño(aren’t they suppose to be spicy?). Well I didn’t taste it, but mom did; for her it was a no go. I said we needed more time. The waitress left, and moments later the bread guy is at my side. the moment he left our waitress was back. My mother told me to go ahead, as she was still looking at the menu when the waitress came back(this is what I was talking about being rushed).I thought that it was pretty clear she needed more time. Here is what we ended up ordering. I started with the Caesar Salad with croutons and Parmesan cheese, for my entrée I had the Steak Frites(a grilled hanger steak & house frite or in English, french fries) with gorgonzola butter. Mom decided on the Baked French Onion Soup, and the Grilled Flatbread Pizza with shrimp scampi. Here’s how the meal played out: My salad came by itself, after feeling rushed to order, my mother had to wait for her soup. The waitress apologize for the delay, though she was the one who brought the salad out alone. As for the salad, not so great. I love Caesar salad, the dressing should be smooth and creamy, with a tang and just a little bite to it. What I got was less smooth and creamy and more see through than any thing else. It was barely there when it came to taste, and just generally watery. Everyone and their brother was very apologetic, and I was told that a group of them(employees) tried it, as they make it in house, they all agreed it was not their best effort. I was also told they were making a new batch. Our waitress offered to get me a different salad, which I refused. The romaine was fresh and very crispy, it was completely edible. I was very disappointed, as I am such a fan of it. The waitress also offered to take it off the check, which she did; it was completely unnecessary, but very good costumer service. She also asked if I’d like more of the dressing, as I felt it too watery I declined that offer. I will say, besides the very fresh and crispy romaine, the other thing it had going for it was it’s extra generous portioning, it was huge! Had the dressing been good, it would have been a home run. I can’t speak to the soup, but as my mom said it was very good, and she seemed to enjoy it. On to the entrees: Finding the words to describe my steak is simple, it was AMAZING! I ordered it medium, you know with about 25% pink inside and nicely seared on the outside. in what I consider to be a modern restaurant miracle, that is what I got. Now about that flatbread, it sounds so good. Here’s the truth, not so much. I had a slice(which I must say it was very nicely sliced and looked really good on the plate). It was supposed to be shrimp scampi, again it(the flavor) just wasn’t there. Dessert: Normally, I don’t order a dessert. Today I though about it, but was really generally disappointed in the selection. Everything on the menu seemed very heavy, all chocolate or cream. Something light and fruity would have been nice. To be fair, they do offer ice cream or sorbet, but I really wanted to take it home. I decided on the apple pie the only other non chocolate non cream choice. The waitress said NO(I’m not kidding).I was flabbergasted she would only bring it to the table. I’ll give them a 2nd chance if for no other reason than somebody knows how to cook a steak.

There’s a new menu at Red Stripe and if you haven’t been in to try it, you’re missing out! They still have the mussels in several varieties, but the new dish– Red Stripe Choucroute is absolutely delish! We shared the dish for a late night dinner. A little duck confit, pork belly, and Alsatian sausage mixed with a wine braised cabbage and roasted red potatoes. YUM! As a starter we had the butternut sage arancini. While risotto is normally not a favorite of mine, I agreed to try it. Glad I did. If you stop in and are fortunate to get a seat at the bar, listen to what Kevin has to say about the menu… he’s always offers a great choices. Happy dining!

Would love to give 4 stars but I’ll have to wait for a second visit. The food was good I had the lobster toll which was good but the frittes was more like stale potatoe sticks. And the short rib stroganoff was delicious would order again. Can’t remember what the wife had be she enjoyed it. Our waitress tried hard but I truly think she’s an airhead and constantly have to ask the busy boy to get our waitress and not to mention she screwed up my desert order twice

Had the beef stroganoff. It was delicious. The short rib was tasty and the sauce was amazing. Would be five stars… but when I asked for more bread for the table they only brought one slice for me. Lol. I was happy..

Went on a Wednesday night with fellow officers for dinner. The waitress janelle was trying her best to accommodate about 12 people with separate check requests. We did not get drink orders in a timely manner and when I asked for a karafe of water she rolled her eyes and me and told me that she’ll get it. I replied back; all I asked for was water and she kept arguing with me. After that fiasco; one of my fellow officers did not get any bread as everyone else was. I made that note and asked the waitress again; of course it was 10 min after everyone was eating a measly slice of bread. Upon ordering, she made a round robin of everyone’s selection and making mine dead last… Hmmm… Odd right? Right… Waited another 20 minutes on a not so busy night for food and of course everyone’s arrived cold and the more rambunctious side got the better treatment as opposed to the quiet side of the group. All in all; dinner was not great as the food was cold, overpriced and served well beyond thier ideal temp. Jeff ratigan strolled by(assuming he was the manager for the night) smiles and everything asking how everything was. The rambunctious side of course said great as they were well attended to. I spoke my mind and he was in utter disbelief that his waitress could do that. He apologized, and came back with a business card with the restaurant manager Ashley power and the assist general manager Alexander broad bent. He tried to rectify the situation and said next time I come in to give them a call. Again he said janelle was one of his best waitress and noted people jokingly said that before and usually they mean the opposite. I told him my demeanor did not change and I was upset. He did the«manager» thing and apologized and shook my hand and off we went. Check time… Of course everyone’s check was taken first except for mine and I was last to receive mine with the comment«this belongs to that man.» She called everyone respectfully by thier name on the card except for me… Once again odd. I feel the treatment of this place for someone trying to ask for water and bread for his fellow officers was uncalled for. I would rate it nothing if I could. The food is oversalted(I had the pork tenderloin) and overpriced. Be careful of the appetizers which are prepackaged Sysco products that are reheat and eat.

I’m torn between 2 and 3 stars, quite honestly, only because I expected so much more from Red Stripe. I love the one in Wayland Square — it’s consistently good and the food quality is on par with the price. The one in East Greenwich — not so much. We came here for a birthday celebration(i.e., lots of drinks, lots of food). The service was ho hum. I didn’t think our server was especially friendly, but moreover, we set up a surprise dessert for the birthday girl and the server essentially ruined the surprise. Whomp. The food was okay. The best part of the meal that everyone seemed to agree on was that the frites were to die for. On the other hand, the burgers were largely unseasoned, the French onion soup was too hot to eat for a good 10 – 15 minutes, and the rest of the meal was… forgettable? Ultimately, I won’t go back to this Red Stripe, choosing instead to hit up the Wayland Square location.

If you follow my reviews you’re well aware that I’m a fan of the Providence Red Stripe location. I finally had the pleasure of my first dining experience at the East Greenwich location a few weeks ago and needless to say, I was not disappointed. The long bar is very attractive and separate from the dining area. I loved that the seating offers a variety of options, too. The restaurant has a classy, yet comfortable, vibe to it. Our server Kayla was highly attentive despite that she also had a large party of 8 – 10 at the table directly to our right. I chose the lobster roll special, which was quite literally stuffed with lobster meat(see photo). I had to use my fork first to pick out the larger claw pieces so I could actually pick it up to eat it! Please do yourself a favor and stop by Red Stripe for a lunch bite or savor your time over dinner. I will certainly be considering them for my next large get-together.

Great lunch outdoors at the tables on the sidewalk! I had the«pick two» lunch option and had ½ of is a chicken asiago type sandwich with mixed greens salad. Very pleased with the portion size and quality of the food. I know good bread when I see it and this bread substantial. Couldn’t beat the price! I can’t wait to come back for dinner and enjoy the indoor atmosphere which looked upscale but not stuffy!

Had a nice dinner here the other evening with my wife and son. Service was excellent! I really appreciate that they train there staff here — our waitress was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable about the beers and menu items. This is such a big part of any restaurant experience and it’s sad how many places don’t get it. We shared some delicious mussels, which was a generous portion. They were not only cooked expertly, but were the cleanest mussels I’ve had in a long time — no grit at all! My pork tenderloin was excellent. Her croque madame was delicious according to her, and my son’s burger was enthusiastically devoured. I didn’t try either of their entrees but they both looked great. The sandwiches are served with frites, and those were also excellent. I look forward to going back and trying a bunch of the other dishes. Many enticing options to choose from. The only off note was there was a distinct lack of music. Some background music would be a good touch.
