Overall I was disappointed. The Thai tea was perfect and the jalapeño bombs were great. We ordered a fire salmon roll expecting it to be flavorful and spicy. It wasn’t spicy at all. First the presentation was poor and not like the image in the menu. It needed soy sauce and wasabi. I preferably don’t like to use either on a speciality roll but it was necessary for me to enjoy it. Never coming back to eat… maybe for a Thai tea to go.

The food was mediocre. I was really expecting more after reading the reviews, but each bite proved that I was not in an upscale Sushi restaurant. This is basic, every day sushi, that you can pick up at Von’s or Albertsons. Service — Bland. Cattle call mentality. No personality, no smiling, no interaction. Just take your order and quickly turn around. The sushi«chefs» don’t even notice anyone — it’s all about heads down and get that food out quick! Prices — Normal. Ambiance — Could be good, but the tables are so close together(remember that cattle call mentality??) you can hear everyone’s personal conversations and smell their perfume! Plus, the hip hop/techno/R&B music was SO loud! I didn’t know whether to eat, or start dancing. Jennifer Lopez belting out her songs is great, but not while dining. Parking — Ladies please listen if you’re dining alone. The parking is in the back. If you can’t find a spot near the alleyway(yes, alley), then don’t go. The parking is sketchy and not very well lit. It backs up to bars, smoke shops and the like. Bottom line, I was disappointed and wouldn’t go again nor recommend it. There are too many around to settle for mediocrity.

I love this sushi place! The sushi always tastes fresh and the prices are very reasonable! Plus your greeted right away and seated quickly. I also like that they stay open pretty late, since i’ve found that most sushi places don’t stay open that late.

This place was more than I expected. It was my first time there and I ordered a baked spicy crawfish roll. It was really tasty and would definitely order it again. Their menu offers a wide selection of items: fresh rolls, baked, noodles, appetizers, dinner plates, etc. their ice cream macaroons are fairly good too. The place was a bit busy(on a Friday) but we were seated right away. Our waitress was also friendly.

Found starfish sushi on Unilocal and my girlfriend and I wanted to take my daughter out to eat before she leaves out of town and UnilocalDEEEELIVERRRED From the minute we walked in we were greeted with a smile and seated. The dining area is clean, the team members professional and the music is festive with the Christmas jingle. The sushi was fresh and the beef bowl, no joke, fresh all Angus beef! The mugs cold and beer refreshing. We are satisfied and will be back

I love this place! Yeah, it’s a hit or miss with their customer service, but their food is what keeps me and my family going back. Their seaweed salad is da’ bomb!(definitely a must try). Everything I’ve tried has been really good. One of my favorite plates is their Scallop Roll, that plate never fails. Pros: Food is good Facility is kept clean Prices are reasonable Cons: Parking sucks(the majority of the time) Customer service is a hit or miss

My wife and I met a couple friends who say this is their favorite place so I reviewed this place on Unilocal. The first reviews where scathing but since it’s our friends we decided to meet them here. First impression is good. We where greeted right away and our friends where already seated. I remained optimistic. My wife ordered the Bento Box with Beef Teriyaki with Shrimp & Veggie Tempura and she gave her meal a(4). I ordered the Chirashi which has a nice presentation. It came with Tuna, Salmon, Unagi, Yellow Tail, White Tuna and imitation Crab Meat — Kani. All seemed fresh until I tried the Kani. It was rotten. It smelled bad and tasted horrible. The worst part is that I put all the first part in my mouth and just gulped it down since I didn’t want to embarrass anyone. I told the waitress about it and she seemed aloof about it. Never did she apologize our never did I see her tell the sushi chefs about it. All things considered, if you want to eat here you should smell all your food before you eat it. I hope I don’t puke tonight after this. I generously gave this place 3 stars since the rest of the party didn’t have a problem with their food. Regards…

Lunch time review. Wow this was great! Service was great. Atmosphere was great. Music was great. I really like these places that use minimal rice so you can enjoy the flavors of the fish. We tried the Havana roll that uses cucumber instead of rice… light and delicious. The angry dragon, though delicious, was likely angry cause the star should have been the eel and it wasn’t. The chicken katsu tempura roll(I still can’t believe I ordered chicken) was very good. The calamari tempura roll was awesome. If time allowed, I could easily eat my way around the menu until I died. Prices seemed very reasonable.

So this place is right across frm yogurtland in the same shopping center. I walked in w my hair looking crazy and w very causal shorts on and was kinda embarrassed once they sat my mom and I because this place is like dressy casual. People were out w their family/dates and here I was looking crazy lol but any who I had the chicken bowl, my mom just had their tempura. We actually shared the chicken bowl it was a good sz portion. My mom wanted dessert(even tho I had my eye on yogurtland lol) and she ordered the exotic Bomba(I believe was the name) and I’m SOGLADSHEDID. It was beyond amazing !!! They have it pictured on the table and it looked like the size of a mochi but when they brought it out it was DEFINITELYSHAREABLE. They give u a cup of ice w a canned coke, meaning no free refills :/ Mixed tempura was like 8 $ Chicken bowl was 9 $ Exotic Bomba $ 6 + 1 canned coke like 2 $ ~30 $ for all that was kinda pricy but I think I’d come back. The waitresses were really nice too…

Went yesterday and got the bento box. Notably, even though we came during lunch time, the bento box at the lunch time special is only offered Monday through Friday from 11 – 3(I think). It is $ 15 for a 3 item bento, which includes rice and salad. The 2 item is $ 2 less. The dinner bento box(bento boxes ordered outside of M-F 11 – 3) include 2 pieces of delicious gyoza. Perhaps, the bento box would be 5 stars if they included an eggroll – I love eggrolls and am used to seeing them included in the bento box. My 3 items were the salmon, CA roll(8 pieces), and mixed tempura(instead of 4 pieces(1 shrimp, 3 vegetables), they usually add 2 sting beans!). My man got the salmon, CA roll, and crunch roll. It was delicious as usual. Too bad we will not be in the area as often, but when we are we will definitely come back.

Sushi is awesome and fresh. But it’s all downhill from there. Staff is not trained in hospitality nor manners. I wasn’t even done ordering and the lady was already grabbing the menu from my hands. What the heck? Not even ones did anybody pass by and offer us refills nor ask us is everything ok with your food. It’s like if the staff is afraid of talking to the customers. If owner is reading this please do something about your staff hospitality training. The way it is now it makes want to think 3 times before returning here. Even if your food is good.

I love sushi, I love Japanese food period. I admit I’m no expert but I’m also not a novice. I’m so glad this eatery is local. I used to go to Kabuki in Cerritos and back in the day Downey had Sambi’s. Sambi’s sushi bar back in 2004 is where I got my start and I also used to eat raw sushi. Now I opt for baked sushi. Service here is amazing. Every single time I’ve visited whether it’s for pick up or dine in, I’ve always been greeted with a smile. I’ve never had to wait for a table. There’s always the option to choose between the sushi bar or a table. The décor is nice, it has a classy and simple look to it. The restaurant and bathrooms are always clean. I’ve tried mostly baked sushi dishes and they do not disappoint. My favorite is probably one of the most simple sushi rolls, the baked crab roll. I’m also a fan of their miso soup and veggie gyoza. I also like their seaweed salad and cucumber salad. Everything has always had a fresh taste to it. The best part is the variety that Starfish offers. My friends love meeting up here for dinner. It’s our go to spot. It’s not the absolute best sushi or Japanese food there is in Los Angeles, it is definitely worth trying if you live in the area. I eat here at least once or twice a month. It’s great for a date or group dinner. I love Starfish!

Decided to give this place a shot before heading home. Wasn’t in the mood for any of the traditional sushi so ordered a couple of tempura rolls. Delicious!!! I was impressed with the coconut shrimp, not overly sweet like most places and the soft shell crab was perfectly cooked with a great taste. Some places tend to have soft shell crab that’s sometimes hard to chew. Last, the fried cheesecake bites were just pure delicious. I can see this easily becoming a habit just as fried Oreos have become with me LOL. Most definitely tackling the sushi bar on my next visit to try some of their classic rolls. Dinner 5÷14÷2015

The whole restaurant looks really nice and dim as you walk in. We decided to try this place after all the good decent reviews but when we got seated down, i ordered a hot green tea. The waiter comes and brings me a cup of green tea but the cup was freaking dirty with things floating around in it and the side of the cup was disgusting and dirty still! I thought it was just me or maybe its from the tea so we told the waiter to bring us another one. He took a look at it then turned around to get us another new one BUT didnt even appoligze about it!!! I even got a dirty white plate!!! this place is dirty!!! So i used some of my tea to wipe the plate down becacuse i didnt want to say anything anymore. the presentation of the sushi was nice. the quality of the sushi is good but since we not from the area we might not come back here again. Bad experience.

Friends and I had 1.5 lunch break for that day we were in Downey so we picked the nearest sushi location to us. It’s right across from Portos near Noodle World, Yogurtland etc. Each one got a bento box and none of us was a big fan. For 2 items bento box: it’s $ 10 For 3 items bento box: it’s $ 12 *$ 3 additional if you pick sashimi or sushi I went with 2 items bento and chose beef & sashimi. $ 13 all together which is not bad for lunch bento box. Well, it is bad only if the food doesn’t taste great. And I didn’t like mine. The beef itself was overcooked like fall of the bones ribs. I think it’s best if they ask customers how they want their beef cook. As for sashimi, I didn’t expect too much from it since it comes with the bento box. It was not that fresh and of course the piece was thin too. As for the salads, their dressing was too sour for my taste. Overall, I wouldn’t come back even if I was in the area again. I can see why people come here because I don’t recall much sushi restaurant within 5 miles radius from this location. Your best bet is to dine in Portos or Noodle World next door for lunch instead.
