This place is dirty and the food tasted like it was pre-made. Nothing was fresh or inviting. Sorry to see an institution like this become such a shadow of what it was. Why did they not keep pace.

I’m so very sad that they are going out of business this Friday:(I’m really gonna miss this place! Channel 11 news stopped by tonight and it was crazy busy due to everyone wanting to get their last Dixie house fix before they close. The sign out front mention that hopefully in the future they plan to open one up. They have the best chicken fried steak and rolls!

With all the Black Eye Peas closed, the only place to go to duplicate their homestyle cooking is the Dixie House. In its last few months, quality at Black Eyed Pea had gone downhill. The food was still good but not as good as it once was. The Dixie House is a return to that era Nothing fancy with the décor except for the large mural of Lakewood on the wall. We remember how the wall mural, unique to the community, was prominently displayed in the Mesquite BEP before the latest remodel and were glad to be able to partake of the nostalgia. As for the food. Being New Year’s day, black eyed peas have to be one of the dishes that is a requirement. I ordered them as one of my sides, but the waitress surprised us with a small sampler designed for those people who did not want to have to select them as one of the sides. I ordered the charbroiled chopped steak. Very flavorful with a mushroom gravy that was thick and rich. Unlike some places that just use cheap hamburger for the chopped steak, this meat was definitely a better quality if only because there was just the right amount of fat in it. My wife had the chicken fried steak. It also was a good piece of meat with just the right amount of breading and not at all greasy. I had baked squash and black eyed peas as my sides. Both were delicious. The black eyed peas were perfectly cooked(in my opinion) with just a hint of firmness to them. The spices were right on with not an excessive amount of salt or pepper but just enough to highlight the flavor of the beans. My wife had the mashed potatoes(nicely whipped) and the squash casserole. Our waitress was excellent. She had one slight slip up bringing me regular iced tea instead of sweet, but when I mentioned it to her, she was back in a minute with a glass of sweet. Got to mention the rolls. You have a choice of freshly baked yeast rolls or corn bread. Unlike the corned bread at the BEP, the Dixie House adds a bit of jalapeño to the mix. It is still mildly sweet but it definitely has a kick to it. They will continue refilling the roll basket all night long if you let them. Our waitress was not certain how long the restaurant will be open since the rest of the parent company — including the Black Eyed Pea chain– has been closed. Hopefully someone will purchase the Dixie House and keep it going. It is a Lakewood staple and the food is great. We did not have the meat loaf, chicken fried chicken, regular fried chicken, fried catfish, or the pot roast this visit. But next time…

Southern cooking, reminds of a place back home in east Texas called Dixie Diner. I mean it’s almost the same exact menu and concept.

I just love Dixie house and I am pretty sure it’s mostly because of the nostalgia of the place. When you’ve gone somewhere for so long, can the food ever be bad? BlackEyed Pea food in Lakewood, I mean, it is what it is. Southern food, good price!

Hadn’t eaten here in probably 20 years plus but moved back recently and had a hankering for good ol’ country cooking smothered in white gravy! Got it to go and way disappointed. Tiny, really thin chicken fried steak barely breaded and very small portions of sides :( Won’t be going back for another 20 years.

This is a popular place for lunch! You know you are in the right spot when you see multiple police units eating lunch here. This seems to be American food. From the menu, it looks to be owned by Black Eyed Pea. The food is cooked to order and priced very well. My lunch party settled for Chicken fried something for everyone. I had the fried chicken and it was really great. Extremely moist, just as you would hope. The Ice Tea was also very fresh, we all know how important good tea can be! The cobbler deserts however, we stone cold frozen and cold. Not what I was expecting when scooping some into my mouth. All in all, great visit. I would come back again without a problem, i just wouldn’t order a cobbler.

I have ordered to go here a few times. I like the vegetable plate, the pasta and their rolls are good. The service isn’t consistent though. I’ve ate in the restaurant once and my waiter was very kind and attentive. Ordered to go twice and the order is never ready on time, and the person at the bar is super slow. No urgency to try and get me my order. They weren’t even busy.

They feature old time southern dishes for a very reasonable price. The banana pudding is delicious! But the best part was the waitress, Theresa, she made the dinner memorable.

Not the best day at the House. It was Labor Day and I really wanted baked white fish. It was just so/so. And the service was so/so. When the waitress leads with the fact that they are having Texas Roadhouse in the back – that might be a hint. Also had the pot roast loaded potato. Requested it be fully loaded. I guess fully loaded means with sour cream. In MOST places it means with cheese, bacon bits, butter and sour cream. It was really smallish and sad. I’m used to better.

One of the last Blackeyed Pea restaurants in DFW. They usually attract an older crowd, the place looks antiquated like a real dixie house. Low prices and usually good food.

Great lunch. Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, kernel corn. Wife had vegetable platter. Rolls and cornbread were fantastic! Turnip greens, okra, green beans, carrots and blackeyed peas. Everything was excellent!!! The carrots had a hint of nutmeg Along with their sweetness. Blackeyed peas seasoned perfectly. We live in Carrollton but plan to make the trek to Lakewood for this deliciousness..

We’ve been here before for dinner and loved it, so decided to take my guy here for an early birthday lunch. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving after sitting there for 15 minutes with absolutely no service — not even water and bread. Not to mention we watched other people get served that were seated before… oh well, maybe next time.

Just ordered dinner from Grub Hub and I gotta say, this place was pretty outstanding for delivery comfort food. I had the Turkey-and that dressing was exactly what I was hoping for. I hate to say it but it beat Grandmas. Whipped sweet potatoes and carrots were my sides and I would get both again. My fiancé had the BBQ chicken with all the stuff on it and oh my it was DELISH. He had the sweet mash and steamed broccoli for his sides which he said was great too. Those rolls. And the cornbread. That’s worth the second trip alone. We also had cobbler(we were feeling fat) and that was pretty perfect. Overall if your looking for some good ol comfort food this is your place. We will deff order from here again.

Comfort food heaven! Everything here is delicious and if you can resist the decadent rolls and cornbread and opt for veggies with your grilled meat or fish you can avoid gaining 5 lbs in one sitting. But hey live a little and have a roll or 3 and then enjoy the godness of the mac and cheese or mashed potatoes with your meal. Service is great and they are open until 10pm. I was tempted to get dessert when our server offered, but I may not be as disciplined on my next visit.

I have been in Lakewood for nine months. This was my first time here. The construction out front was very confusing as to where to find the front door. It would be helpful to have a sign or arrow guiding us to the front entrance. Place was clean and servers were friendly. I thought they had breakfast on Saturdays but it is only Sundays. I decided to stay and tried some coffee, very good and strong, not bitter. I ordered the tilapia wrap very tasty. The rolls that come with each meal Oh My! So very good. Delicate, melt in your mouth. Lastly I ordered an Irish Coffee. It is rare to have the ‘correct’ whipped cream. This is the real deal. If you have been to San Francisco. You know what I mean. Only bad thing was the sewage smell in the rest room. Not sure if it always there or just that one day. I will be returning. Too many other food options that I must try.

I really like Dixie House! It’s the comfort food headquarters in Dallas. It’s a cozy spot in the middle of the Lakewood hustle & bustle. Once you’re greeted and seated, a basket of buttered rolls and cornbread is served right away. My mom is not so impressed with the rolls but we agree that the cornbread is pretty good. So far my favorites are the catfish and chicken fried steak. Other good choices are the meatloaf and chicken garlic pasta. You can’t go wrong with the sides. I love the squash casserole and cabbage. If you don’t feel like digesting meat, they offer veggie plates. I’m always too full to think about dessert so I haven’t indulged yet. My family and I normally go on Sundays and it’s not packed. I saw the sign stating that kids eat free on Tuesday evenings so that would be night to try for those with kiddos.

The Dixie House is a local favorite for the Lakewood community. From the outside it’s a home style eatery. But honestly it’s just another Black Eyed Pea that has maintained it’s name in this quaint community. The good thing is the dinner rolls & corn bread is always tasty. The sweet tea is just what you would expect from a southern cookery. Overall this is the place you would take your grandmother to eat after church on Sundays or lunch on Weds. The menu has all your southern favs. meatloaf, fried catfish, fried green tomatoes and even baked white fish. They have a full bar in case you’re in the mood for a adult beverage. Parking is the most challenging part with Lakewood. You might have to circle around a few times to find a open space.
