I am a local who frequents another steak house across the bay. This is my first time at Stake Chophouse and I must say I was impressed. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Bar staff took a little longer than usual to prepare the drinks ordered and it was not crowded. Birthday champagne was an added touch. Steaks were done to perfection, although the serving plate was a little cool. Sides were excellent… kale shaved brussell sprout salad was excellent… may go back to the bar and just have that. I will definitely recommend it to friends and visitors. It’s pricey but worth it for a special occasion.

Let me start by saying we went on a Friday night and didn’t have reservations. I went up to the hostess desk and was greeted in a snobby manner. I asked if there was bar and was told that it was very busy. She headed towards the bar and I wasn’t sure if she wanted me to follow her. I did as she did a quick scan of the bar. She said again that it was really busy. Most other places would of given me an estimated time frame on how long they thought it would be before somethings would come open, she didn’t. I went back to hostess desk to get a table. Once again was given a snotty attitude when I requested a table I was the told they had nothing until 8:00. I saw many tables open and I realize they may of been reserved but the attitude at the front desk was very elitist. We’ll try again but I hope for a better experience We tried again on Thursday and we were very happy with the experience. I made reservations through open table and got there a bit early so we sat in the bar. When our table was ready, the hostesses were very nice and welcoming. The food was wonderful as was the service. I was impressed with the fact that they offer you your choice of knives for dinner. Next time we’ll get there earlier so we can sit outside

Love this steak house, located in Coronado island. The interior is one of the cleanest and modernest ones I’ve seen. Since this place is not very spacious, the server would pay close attention to customer’s needs. Once sitting down, our friendly servers came immediately, we were offered a selection of knives, and of course, when speaking of cutting meat, sharpness and a good grip become quite important. The meat was very juicy, I always like it medium rare and have some running inside. They did an amazing job of having the steak coated with great flavor and kept the middle part moist. Dessert was perfect, nutty carrot cake, loaded with some textures and very moist. Big thumbs up!

We dined at this restaurant last week, during SD Restaurant Week(January 17 – 242016) to see what they were all about and whether they were indeed deserving to be named as one of San Diego’s Best restaurants. Stake Chophouse & Bar opened in early 2016, as one of the city’s only steakhouse. The restaurant is located on the main street of one of my favorite San Diego neighborhoods, the picturesque Coronado, notably known for the historic Hotel del Coronado and the San Diego Coronado Bridge. This is a classy place all around and, I must say, they treat you like first-class from start to finish. We were immediately escorted to our table, where Sigi was quick to serve us. I asked for his recommendation on a Starter, as I was torn between their Stake Tartare and Wood Fired Oysters Rockefeller. He suggested the latter, which was what I was leaning towards anyway, as I felt it would be a good compliment to my steak. It was one of the best Oysters Rockefeller appetizers I have ever had, not too breaded and just the right amount of sauce and green vegetables. Please note that the restaurant’s name includes«& Bar» and their drink menu did not disappoint. There were glass walls displaying wine bottles from around the world. For tonight, my partner in crime and I instead chose from their list of cocktails. He, a Dirty Martini with Hendrick’s Gin and Blue-Cheese stuffed olives, served in a sleek, long-stemmed Martini glass. I chose a Pomito, a twist on the traditional Mojito, but made with Pomegranate juice. Both were beyond our satisfaction. We were also undecided on which steak we wanted for our Main course. Sigi assisted in our decision-making by bringing to us a tray, displaying some of their choice cuts — Petite Filet Mignon, Bone-In Ribeye, New York Strip, American Wagyu, and authentic Japanese Wagyu Beef at $ 30 per ounce. We both chose the Dry Aged Bone-in Ribeye. Before our steaks arrived, we were also presented in a cigar-type box, a professional cutlery selection of 5 high-quality knives(from Germany, France and Japan) in which to cut our steaks. What a nice touch to our dining experience! I chose the one constructed of stainless steel from the country from which I was born(Japan), the Chroma Type 301, surprisingly designed by F.A. Porsche. My partner in crime chose a Friedr. Dick 1905 Series Steak knife from Northern Germany. Our portions of Dry Aged Bone-in Ribeye steaks were larger than expected and nice and juicy with generous marbling throughout. We finished our dinner by sharing a slice of Carrot Cake Cream Cheese & Sour Cream Icing and Salted Butterscotch. We loved the frosting and touch of salted butterscotch, which toned down the sweetness, as I prefer desserts that aren’t too rich. Our Dry Aged Bone-in Ribeye steaks were savory and quite filling, even more so that we both had some remaining. Sigi kindly took back our remainders to the kitchen to package in what they so-lovingly called our«Care Bags» to have waiting for us at the front, upon our departure. Prices are high, but in line with other fine steakhouses in San Diego. Did my assessment conclude that the Stake Chophouse & Bar is deserving amongst the San Diego’s Best Restaurants listing? I’ll STAKE my reputation on it.

I have come here the past two years to celebrate my birthday and have been overjoyed both times. The ambiance is great and very classy. The service is fantastic and attentive. And the steak, my god, the steak is THEBEST. They don’t call it «Stake Chophouse» for nothing. The best steak I’ve had in my life has been here(Japanese Waygu). The steak melts like butter in your mouth, it’s absolutely delicious. Everything I’ve eaten here has been perfect: from the appetizers, to the main course, to the dessert. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fancy night out or a special occasion.

We went last night for Rest week, it was awesome! Our server Mark was really friendly professional and helpful, we really enjoyed our date night there! We chose the beet salad, the Wagyu appetizer, and I had the Filet from Washington, with potatoes and broccoli rabe, a glass of red malbec… Great atmosphere, great food, great service, I cant wait to go back and try the outdoor patio bar space with fire for happy hour!!! Thanks Mark for a great experience!

This place is worth the $$$, I frequent the place, Nick the bartender makes great cocktails and great recommendations for wine and food. I love the attention to the little details in service that make this a dinning experience along with fabulous food. I haven’t ran across anything I haven’t liked. The manager Jennifer is always accommodating. Try the Blueberry bread pudding! Yummy to die for.

I went with my husband to this wonderful restaurant. When we arrived it looked like a very nice upscale restaurant we were shown to the bar to wait for our table, we were there at 445 our reservation was at 5. Apparently the bar was in high demand because there were several people eyeing us waiting for us to leave. We had a couple of good drinks can’t really remember them so not memorable. What was memorable was the vibe it seemed like such a cool bar with an even cooler balcony with lots of heaters and even live music, the balcony was packed, and by the time we were seated so was the bar. The restaurant itself seemed like a steak house, meaning lots of dark colors, leather and amber lighting. I have been to my fair share of steakhouses and this one was very modern and beautiful, not stuffy and dark. I liked the atmosphere right away. The service was awesome from the get go, we had our bar drinks taken on a tray to our table which is always nice. We ordered foie gras(because I always order it if its on the menu) and steak tartare of Japanese wagyu sashimi. The foie was a nice size portion served with brioche, wonderful! The wagyu sashimi melted in my mouth it was amazing and $ 30 an oz never gonna be eating a full steak of this anytime soon! Oh I almost for the bread! Not our server but someone came over with a basket and holding tongs so we could pick our bread choice. Before we ordered the entrée the server came with a plate of steaks to choose from, I like it! Then we could see the marbling and appreciate the steaks that much more. On to the entrees, before our steaks came out we were offered an array of knives to choose from.(I went to the saltbox restaurant just for this reason.) They had the beautiful porsche knife, but I had used it before. Yup sure did at the saltbox, waste of a knife at that restaurant. Back to this restaurant, so steak, I had the American wagyu, my husband had the filet topped with foie. If I would have known how much foie he was gonna get… it was more then our appetizer! Everything was cooked perfectly, service impeccable and atmosphere cool. Highly reccomend, one of the better steaks and steakhouses in San Diego.

This has to be one of my favorite restaurants in SD. The rooftop is beautiful during sunset and the live music adds to the experience. Their happy hour is great and the service is friendly. You can’t go wrong with the filet mignon skewers, short rib flatbread, and molten lobster dip apps. Stake makes for a great night out in Coronado.

Coronado. Land of the hidden alley ways and the shops with tiny signs in them. Low speed limits. Confusing streets. Tourist traps. Across from the glitter of The Del lies a small string of restaurants and diners. Spread along a small length of Coronado’s main drag, Orange, these eateries offer a variety of cuisines. But wait, what is that? There is fire on the roof of one of these establishments. That doesn’t look right. With a little further exploration you will soon realize that there is a stair case tucked away with a single vertical sign displaying the name of this rooftop restaurant, Stake. As you climb the stairs(elevator is available to the left) you enter what appears to be a high end white linen restaurant. The large glass door swings open and you are greeted by friendly smiles. I hung a hard right and visited the lounge area for Happy Hour. The menu offered half price tastings of a variety of foods while I was focused on my two base comparison foods — oysters, and an Old Fashion. Straight away I ordered one dozen of the fresh shucked oysters followed with an old fashion, steak skewers, and meat balls. The oysters arrived promptly and sat on a large bowl of ice with freshly grated horseradish, cocktail sauce, oil, and lemons adorning the center. The oysters were cold, real cold, like recently removed from the freezer and kept near freezing cold. They presented a sweet and crisp flavor with a surprising amount of meat for these little $ 1 guys. More bone was left inside of these shellphrodisiacs than one would appreciate. With every slurp, came a pick. Picking the bone out of your teeth, tongue, wherever that slippery little guy ended up. The very orangey Old Fashioned was next. The well-oiled rim provided the tease to the taste buds that everything will be okay — and then the whiskey hits. Wait — where’s the burn? Where’s the flavor? It seems as though Stake has discovered the sweetest, lowest alcohol content whiskey possible and infused it with more sweet and a heavy orange aroma. While it was fun to sip on, it certainly wasn’t your typical Old Fashioned that you have come to respect over the years. The meat balls arrived after the sun had displayed a slew of colorful rays across the sky and the rooftop lounge had sunk into a faintly lit darkness. Good thing too. I snapped a shot with my camera so I could check-out what I was about to ingest, but then found myself sticking my fork deep into the pot they were presented in and pulled out a dense, sweet, sticky ball. The gravy was cooled and thick, the meatballs landed in my stomach like a boulder to the bottom of the ocean. The presentation was awful while the taste was again, sweet. Skewers. Oh please let this meat be good. These little over priced guys came out on two skewers about three inches long. Disappointment had begun. The meat was slid off and sliced into bite sized chunks. A side of chimichurri dressed the skewers in a small bowl to the right. I took a bite of the meat — plain — no dressing. What was this?! A steak that was sweet and tasted of lamb?! I’m game~! I took another bite — this time adding a dipping of the Argentinian oil — nope — back to eating it plain. The meat, albeit overpriced, was the saving grace of this happy hour, less the sunset. The view from atop is no greater than any other land locked rooftop bar in San Diego that is just above street level but not high enough to actually see anything. If you are looking for a solid view of the ocean while sipping cocktails and enjoying the company of others with a toasty fire, keep heading west, The Del is just down the road.

Great outdoor patio with live music and firepits to keep you warm. Happy hour is great on the patio. Steak tartare, popcorn and mussels are some of my favorite appetizers. Their steaks are great quality. The ambience is beautiful. Is it bad that I love their bread and butter which has olive oil and salt on it so much? Great wine selection and great service.

My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner. It was a Wednesday nights get and we got there early and sat outside for happy hour. They had live music and we watched the sun set with drinks and some lobster cheese dip(amazing). After an hour we were sat inside for dinner. Seriously the best service I’ve had in San Diego. Dinner was great, my wife tried the filet with peppercorn sauce and I got the steak sampler. We were stuffed but we had to try dessert, so after not being able to make up our minds we got the caramel almond cake and the blueberry muffin bread pudding. OMG the bread pudding was heavenly… Please try it, even if you think you don’t like bread pudding. I highly recommend this place if your in San Diego and want an amazing steak experience.

This place is my new go to Happy Hour spot in Coronado. Upstairs outside Patio with long wall to wall firepits for keeping warm and giving it a romantic vibe. The restaurant inside is cozy and well decorated! The food was tasty and excellent! The Oysters for $ 1 each on happy hour from 4:30pm to 6:30pm were big, succulent and DELICIOUS! EVERYDAYHAPPYHOUR is hard to find in SD. Live Music every Wednesday and Sunday outside Patio area. Definitely worth the visit, especially if you are looking for a Great Steak Place:-)

Go during happy hour on a Wednesday, and catch Matt Heinecke’s set. I believe he starts at 5:30PM; listening to him sing while enjoying a good cocktail is a great way to wind down. If you are a bacon enthusiast, order the Brooklyn Bacon Steak — it’s two ginormous pieces of bacon, and they are very tasty.

My boyfriend and I had a thoroughly fantastic dining experience at Stake. We ordered the tasting menu which we realized was not so much a tasting menu as it was just a whole lot of food, but after the meal we were happy to take home some leftovers. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and had great instincts for what we needed to make our evening memorable. The ambience is upscale yet hip. There is a very hypnotizing fire feature on the patio, if you’re a pyro like me you will spend a good amount of time staring at it. Highlights of the tasting menu included perfectly flavored crab, A5 Japanese Wagyu(OMG put more of this in my mouth please), and the blueberry white chocolate bread pudding. I don’t even really like bread pudding that much, but this thing tasted like a soft blueberry muffin with white chocolate sauce. It was so warm and gooey, I was completely full but couldn’t stop eating it. Drawbacks of the evening: The sommelier was kind of awkward and didn’t really seem to know his stuff all that well, and was not very well spoken when discussing wine flavors/tasting notes. The salads and sides we got were good but not outstanding. When we go back, we plan on sticking with the seafood, steak, and dessert because this restaurant goes above and beyond in those categories.

Contemporary feel, good old fashioned steakhouse service, and great food. I’ve only ever eaten entrees here once, as I love the appetizers and sides so much that I really don’t need an entire steak. On that occasion I was with a friend, so we shared the tournedos, duchesse potatoes, and the kale salad. Steak and potatoes were perfect. Kale salad was good but I kind of wish they would lightly steam the kale and sprouts first, only because it’s a lot of chewing! The other visits all involved Stake’s awesome happy hour– nice wine, beer, and drink offerings at good prices, and a nice selection of appetizers offered at half-price. The Stake fries are a big stack of large thick-cut fries(like wedges, but flat…), probably 3 potatoes worth. Served in a big stack, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and served with house-made ketchup and bordelaise sauces. You can’t go wrong. Flatbreads are enough for 2 or 3 people. The paprika short rib version is stellar– lots of succulent meat, red peppers, and cheese on a crust that is crispy, tender, delicate and chewy all at the same time. If you want the steak experience without the cost or portion of a full steak, try the filet mignon skewers– two skewers with 3 medium-rare chunks of filet are more than satisfying. They have entire menu sections devoted to potatoes and vegetables. Duchesse potatoes. Potatoes Lyonnaise. Creamed spinach. And my very favorite, a stuffed delicata squash that could make for a meal by itself. If you have room for dessert, head right for the chocolate almond caramel cake. Boom. Located near the Hotel Del, with a huge deck that overlooks the Del and down the street to the ocean.

My date surprised me with a staycation at a local resort and dinner at this restaurant. A girl can really get used to this ;). The restaurant is modern and classy. The outdoor patio is really beautiful at night(didn’t see it in daylight) and they have a huge selection of wines & a full bar so you can’t go wrong. They use organic, hormone free and grass fed products. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable. He gave us great recommendations and we settled for scallops, rib eye steak, grilled asparagus with blue cheese and the stake fries. For dessert we had the chocolate cake/mousse which was also amazing. Overall, I was impressed with everything including the service and I will definitely return.

I got to try some complimentary bites at an event and had the stake tartare from here. The tartare had prime filet mignon with cornichon, capers, and parsley and was served on a toasted crostini. The crostini was more like a potato chip though LOL. I’ve never been to the actual restaurant, but it looks like a romantic place to dine at, especially since it’s situated in the heart of Coronado.
