Ordinarily I hate shoe shopping. I have a hard time finding shoes that fit well. But on the recommendation of a friend, I went to Scheels. A very knowledgeable clerk, a young man named MIke, measured my foot and determined that I had been wearing the wrong size. I told him about my foot problems and how I needed a roomy toe box, flexibility and light weight in a tie shoe. He zipped down the huge inventory and selected a bunch of shoes. To my amazement, I loved them all. Realizing how hard it is to find good help in shoe shopping, and considering it an investment in good health, I bought 8 pairs. I’m glad I did. The shoes were well worth the price. I commend Scheels for hiring clerks who really help customers. I will return to Scheels now to purchase other things. Also, I admire the store’s principled stance in respecting Sundays and Thanksgiving. NJS, Iowa City

As far as sporting goods department stores go, this one seems really overpriced with very few sale items outside of the clothing sections. My most recent visit was to stock up on some new camping supplies and while the staff were very friendly, they were also pushy enough that I assume they must be working on commission? I did find exactly what I was looking for though and there was a nice selection of quality items alongside some cheaper options for everything I was picking up(a bigger tent and a couple new items to add to our cookware set). I appreciate that they offer price-matching. The downside however being that everything’s overpriced so you can bet you’ll find cheaper options online, which will make for a time-consuming checkout.

I don’t know what it is about Iowa but it is one of the friendliest states! I was in the Coralville mall after visiting friends and happened into this sporting goods store. After browsing for a few minutes a sales manager from another department came up to me to ask if I needed help. I couldn’t find the right size for my son. He whisked away to check the computer stock. There were 3 in stock. I thought since we couldn’t find the shirt on the any of the racks that we would miss out. Not at all. The manager went on a full store search to locate the shirt we wanted(it is a large store too). He was successful and we got the shirt we wanted. The cashier was equally friendly and attentive. They have customer service here in spades, and I mean that as a good thing. I would highly recommend this store!

My last review wasn’t so kind but I had some bike service that I was really compelled to get done last night but wasn’t equipped to do myself. I brought in my parts less than an hour after they were to close at 9(late for a bike shop!) and the guys there were great. Very helpful even late in the evening, and their service charge was more than reasonable for what I needed done.

Store is crazy expensive no matter what you’re shopping for. They carry anything and everything sports related, but you’ll break the bank here. Store is always swamped with people; likely because they’re attached to the mall and there’s no other Scheel’s store within a 60 – 75 mile radius. Departments are cluttered and crammed full with merchandise making it really difficult for someone to shop; especially all of the gear in the Hawk department. Thankfully you’d only catch me here once every 5 years.

Stopped in on our way home from Iowa a few weeks ago. My husband wanted to stock up on some Hawkeye garb. This place looks EXACTLY like Dick’s Sporting Goods in Lombard(an establishment I loathe), so I was wary. I was eyeballing some Herky-themed women’s tees, and a very helpful associate pulled one down for me from way up high. It was really cute, and the cut was just right… but then I turned the price tag over. «$ 42.00». COMEONFOLKS. Not everyone who graduated from University of Iowa is a freakin’ millionaire, ok?!? I want to display my pride and NOT eat Ramen noodles for a few days.(Ok, I’m over-dramatizing a bit. But for the love of the t-shirt gods…$ 42???) Anyhoo — I tried my best not to let my thoughts be displayed all over my face — it’s not this nice associate’s fault. But then… ka-ching! This is where the 4 star rating comes into play here — she leans in and tells me there are mens tees on clearance around the corner and that there were plenty of smalls left. I thanked her profusely and promptly high-tailed it over there to have a look-see. Yep! I scored a super-cute small grey tee with a vintage Hawkeye logo on it. $ 9.00!!! NINE. DOLLARS. Thank God, because I hate store-bought ramen. Plus, that shit’ll kill ya. Long story short: pretty much just as pricey as Dick’s, but the customer service is unbeatable!

The store is well organized. The people were very knowledgeable. I was a little disappointed in the selection of t-shirts for the different colleges and sports teams. Particularly on the bargain rack. I thought I’d get a better selection. They are nice folks though with fair prices. I’d go back

I shop the bargain racks here and that’s about it. Everything else is a little pricey in my opinion. As far as Hawkeye gear goes, they have a great selection but you can usually get a comparable item cheaper at some of the smaller local stores. This is a fun store to stroll through though no doubt.

Best place to pick up a brand new, new era baseball hat! They have all mlb team hats along with a lot of other misc. Items, the guns here are a little pricey but the ammo is pretty cheap!

I’m new to the area and needed a winter coat. Service was great, very personal — they showed me coats for 30 minutes and when I found one, we checked prices online and they price matched. Bought a bike here earlier this year as well and had a similar experience. Matched prices and managers were willing to haggle a little bit on the prices of things to make the sale. — Will be the spot we come for all things sports

This is quite a sports store. It has 2 floors of just about anything and everything you could possibly want except for what I wanted. Yeppers they did not have a cobra 15 band radar detector. Oh well off to Sioux City, Ia.

They have a lot of products. Although most of their stuff is a bit expensive. I get a lot of good deals on their sale items though. We got a pair of snow pants for $ 20! Merrill Boots for $ 60.

I’m split on this place. When I need something to wear, I usually can find something. I have bought baseball, golf and basketball shoes from Scheels. I can’t say that they have the best selection of shoes. I purchased most of these shoes because I didn’t have time to drive all over town. I’m not happy with Scheel’s high prices on professional team sports wear. $ 60 for an MLB team sweatshirt? That’s a bit high. Maybe $ 45. The pants and shorts are not better. We also picked up a pair of bikes here. They cost around $ 400 each and the bike expert there was especially knowledgeable. However, they do push the more expensive bottles because they SMELL like plastic. It’s your call. The sunglass selection is great but don’t buy one when you’re in a hurry. They don’t have anyone stationed here and flagging someone down can take a bit. Each department has several people on hand so getting advice is never an issue. I think, with their limited selection in each category, they usually do a good job promoting their goods. Lastly, I think if Scheels would offer a few EXCLUSIVE brands and actually PROMOTED them, I’d be convinced that they will be around awhile. Each department in each store has a buying specialist. If you want, you can get in touch with them and let them know what you’d like to see in their stores. Folks, you have a be a big fan of a business to know this much about them. I have spent many $‘s here…
