Since the waitress this morning said she had«never seen» us before, I am going to write a memorable review. We have lived in EHC off and on for the last 2 years. We have eaten at this restaurant at least once a week if not twice. We have even taken visiting family there. It has been our go-to place. No more. This morning the waitress informed us they didn’t have poached eggs, which I have eaten there many times. I have understood when the restaurant was too busy and they«didn’t have enough burners» to do poached eggs that morning and I never expected them on weekends. However, this morning with three people in the restaurant, she told us that they did not«do» poached eggs. When I said I had eaten them there before, she said, «Some people will do them for some people.» Don’t know what status you need to be to get an egg cooked the way you want it, but we weren’t in it. We paid for my coffee and left. I walked out the door because I didn’t want to say what I was thinking. My husband stayed behind and told her that we were frequent customers. She replied that she had never seen us before. There are many ways she could have handled this, but this was not one of them. So this review is not based on food. It’s based on the very poor attitude of the waitress who said out loud as we were leaving, «They are leaving because they wanted poached eggs.» Clueless.

Fresh food and good service. My husband and I both had omelets. The spinach in mine was fresh baby spinach. Italian omelet for my husband which he really enjoyed. It was also a «real» omelet not browned scrambled eggs cooked on a flat top. We will be back!

A yummy little restaurant serving simple fare like breakfast, sandwiches, and grilled menu items(only open until 2 pm). Our party had pancakes(quite possibly the best hotcakes we have ever tasted) and a roast beef sandwich. Glad to hear they use Dietz & Watson cuts for their sandwiches. Nothing fancy, just a locally owned restaurant trying to make it in a sleepy town. We highly recommend it.

Though I only go here once in a while because of my family’s busy schedule, I love Gilchrist. Food is fresh. Holds you over until dinner if you go for brunch. Each time I’ve gone, it gets better and better. Reminder: This restaurant is CASHONLY, so before you leave the house, grab some cash. Overall, great place to go.

If you’re looking for mimosas and fancy expensive brunch type food, this is not the place for you. This a no bells-no whistles– no credit card(unless they call it in to the other store) kind of place! They serve home-made, homestyle breakfast and lunch food that is consistent in quality and taste. Also very reasonably priced. I have never had a better pancake in my life. I prefer them flavorful and not overly doughy/fluffy. These are amazing! I recommend the peach or plain. My husband likes the banana walnut(on special) or chocolate chip. Also, Hungry Man combos– so much food for so little money! And the coffee is great too. And I’m not a huge fan of regular drip American coffee mind you. Just a personal note– with the scrapple(DELICIOUS) it’s served very thick, so sometimes softer than I would prefer. You can however request for it to be sliced thin and cooked well-done. =) Service matters! Service is great, friendly, and quick. This place is always packed so get there before church lets out on the weekend or you may find yourself waiting outside in line! Well done, Gilchrist. We come to you everytime we are back home to visit my mother. Cheers!

My Uncle told me to visit this spot if I wanted«a breakfast that was special». That comment alone convinced me to drop by on my recent visit to South Jersey. The place is small but very cute and charming. I sat alone at the counter and felt very comfortable even though it’s obvious that this place has it’s locals that the staff know by name and even despite being the only one without a Jersey accent. I am usually hesitant to order omelets out due to the grease factor but decided to try the Italian Omelet with Italian sausage, provolone and green bells peppers. It was fantastic. Not a drop of grease on my plate! I was impressed. The homefries were the good chunky ones and were also not greasy. Breakfast was served quickly and hot. I did wish my waitress had been a tiny bit more attentive but overall she was very pleasant. Specials were written on the chalkboard. When I saw Manhattan Clam Chowder… you just know that you aren’t in New England anymore! I ordered a breakfast to go for a family member and while waiting a gentleman who seemed to be the owner sat at the counter to eat. He engaged me in friendly bantor and gave me a very warm welcome. Breakfast prices were extremely reasonable. I’d recommend this place to anyone. I will be back and next time and will try the pancakes that everyone is raving about.

Upon walking into this restaurant, I felt like I was at my grandmothers house. It’s and immediately comforting and warm atmosphere. Décor is also a little like grandmas house, very kitschy and random. I came here with friends for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The home fries were crispy and seasoned really well. The blueberry pancakes were almost like crepes but so delicious. The best part of my meal was actually the toast. I never realized how lacking diner toast is until I had this bread. It was thick, soft, and flavorful and actually served as a nice addition instead of a vehicle for egg yolk. FYI– this is CASHONLY which is kind of annoying, but no wait, staff was friendly, and food was great. I’ll take gillchrist over Shea’s any day.

Pork roll egg and cheese sandwich. Yum yum yum. I was getting gas for May way back to philly when my friend ran into this place and grabbed me a sandwich to go. It was amazing and I owe her one for this stop. If in the area I will try this place again.

I see lots of comments on the pancakes so maybe I should have tried those, because their attempt at making an omlette was mediocre at best. No hash browns, just some very plain«home fries.» Coffee was passable. No complaints about service or keeping coffee cup full. Not horrible, mind you, but a restaurant in business this long should have something that makes it special. I was kind of surprised it was so meh.

This is a small, homey place with lots of history. I used to visit their Atlantic City location and loved the spinach omelets! Now? I can’t go there without ordering the blueberry pancakes! They’re thin, huge, and absolutely delish. The price point is unbeatable. A fun little spot if you’re hungry for a breakfast treat!

The food is decent. Nothing fancy, but it’s definitely a step up from eating at a diner. The blueberry pancakes are pretty good, though they are a bit different from typical pancakes. They are very thin and sweet and the edges are a little crispy. The coffee is superior to that of many small breakfast places and diners. I would love to give this place 4 – 5 stars because it’s inexpensive, relatively good, and the older man who works there(I believe he is the owner) is extremely attentive to all of his guests. Unfortunately, every time I have eaten here, the service has been extremely lackluster. I feel privileged if I’m able to get a single refill of coffee with my meal at the Gilchrist. I used to assume it was just the way they operated, which is fair enough, but today my waitress offered refills to the group sitting in front of me no less than 3 times and they already had their food when I first arrived. She did not ask my table one time if we would like a refill, even as she stood a step away with the coffee pot, pouring for her other guests. The only person who refilled our coffee was the owner and that only happened once(which I am not upset about, as it is not his responsibility in the first place). All in all, if you are in the area and need a quick, affordable bite to eat, you can’t go wrong with the Gilchrist. Just make sure to ration your coffee carefully; your first cup could very well be your last.

Decent breakfast, however I’ve seen numerous potential customers leave due to being«cash only». Step up to the times people, get a credit card machine!

Trying to get the city name updated(really in Cologne, NJ, not Absecon), but had the AWESOME pancakes again, and the rest of the group had really good fresh spinach omelet, toast, etc. Coffee is surprisingly great too.
