I’ve been seeing Lynda for probably 12 years. She did my hair for my wedding, has seen me through many lengths and colors and new styles, and she’s never steered me wrong. I can’t recommend this place enough.

Went back to try again, and this time Linda took me right away(thanks, Linda!) and the cut was GREAT.

I got a cut here a few months ago. The lady was really sweet and you could tell she was nervous. I really wanted to NOT hate this cut. I kept hoping that it would grow out and be okay, but no. It is the worst cut I have ever had, sorry :(

I don’t get regular haircuts, but when I do, it’s a spur of the moment, need it done right now sort of thing. I called around to three other salons in the neighborhood on Valentine’s Day(Saturday) to see if they had any last-minute appointments open. Everything was booked up for weeks. I called Styles and was told they had several openings for the day. I was kind of surprised when I heard that & even more so now that I’ve come back home after my haircut. This place uses only Aveda products, is clean & simply decorated. I saw Joe who warmly welcomed me and was great about striking up a lovely conversation. He is also the first stylist I’ve had who’s actually listened to what I want for my hair & has done that, then more! He gave me my desired style and it ended up more amazing than I expected. I was expecting my bill to be pushing $ 90 based on my last haircut experience downtown. BUT I only paid $ 55 plus tip for one of the best cuts I’ve ever had. That’s why I am slightly shocked that I was able to get an appointment here! Super friendly and awesome service, very affordable & a wonderful hair cut! I’ll definitely be going back to see Joe.

I just had my hair done and makeover at Styles. Just check out my profile pic. I look fabulous! If you look just half as good as I do, this place is worth it. The owner understands the special needs of larger and trans clients.

I want to start this off by saying that my hair wasn’t in great shape when I went in. It had been over a year since I’d gone to a salon. While I’m not someone that normally spends a lot of time at a salon, this was atypical, as every 4 – 6 months is more common for me. So, I realize that my hair was very long and a bit of a mess. That said, I think it could have been handled better. When I came in, I explained that I wanted it cut so that my hair physically touched my shoulder and with bangs that moved to my left. He thought they should be to my right and I explained I really wanted them to my left. He agreed. He verified the length I wanted then, before brushing or washing my hair, pulled my hair back and promptly cut clear across with scissors. It was a blunt cut, and was much shorter than I had asked for. My hair was just barely below my ears. He then washed it. He did my bangs, which were on the opposite side of my face from what I thought we’d agreed on. All throughout the cut, he kept spontaneously explaining/justifying his cutting off my hair in one fell swoop like that. He told me it would make it easier to wash in his sink(without my commenting on it), he told me that having it shorter would be good since I «only cut my hair once a year»(at which point I reminded him that I would get it cut more often with the right stylist), he informed my husband that my new style was«more modern and feminine» and, at one point, spontaneously tried to convince me that the length in the back was the length that I asked for(it wasn’t). Note that I didn’t complain about what he’d done, aside from asking him not to cut it any shorter than that. I won’t claim that my hair was in great shape before I went in there or that giving it a good cut would be a quick or easy job. That said, as a professional, if he didn’t have the time or ability to do what I was asking, it was his responsibility to tell me. If he needed to cut off part of it before we started, he could have cut more conservatively and if he _absolutely_believed that he could not cut it without chopping that much off, he should have discussed that with me. It would have been different if it was a shorter-than-expected but otherwise competent cut. However, it was not. It actually _looks_like someone just took a large pair of scissors and cut across. My husband, an optimistic man that generally insists that all of my haircuts are flattering, admitted today that it was poofy and the entirely wrong cut for my hair. Honestly, I could have had a friend with no experience cut my hair and had the same effect. Fortunately, I’m fairly low-maintenance about this sort of thing and can just toss a hat over it until it grows in, but I really shouldn’t have to. In short, I’d say that if you want something really simple done and this place is in your immediate neighborhood, then you may be okay here. However, I wouldn’t go here for anything remotely complex or time-consuming.

If you have curly hair, finding the right stylist can be nerve wrecking… but thank goodness for Alan at Styles. I have been getting my curls snipped here for at least three years now. Great cuts and great color jobs… great service as well. All the stylists there are friendly, enjoy a good conversation, all while making you look good! Just FYI, bring cash for tip, can’t put it in a credit card.

Just went in to Styles on very short notice and got an appointment with Lauren. Sh made me feel very comfortable even though I was new to the salon. She made sure she understood what I was talking about and gave me advice for what would and wouldn’t work with my hair type. I will definitely be going back, even though it was a hefty $ 52…wish they would have asked me if I needed some water or coffee… That is the only reason they didn’t get 5 stars.

I really wanted to like this place. I really did. However, I struggled with the ends of the spectrum here. At what point does focus and precision(for the most part) outweigh just not having any customer relations skills? That is my quandary about evaluating this place. Since moving here, I have found it very difficult to find a good male stylist who can do good men’s hair. It shouldn’t be a problem. Perhaps I was spoiled by my stylist in Atlanta, but men’s hair is not too difficult, even when you throw in color. That being said, I believe that men, unless their hair is long, should not be charged the same color prices as a lady whose hair is ostensibly longer. My stylist in Atlanta felt that way, but they don’t see it that way at Styles. I read some reviews on here( Unilocal) and decided to give Styles a try. My first inkling should have been when I walked in and the receptionist, with whom I had booked the appointment the day before, said I was down for just a cut(I rarely, rarely, rarely, just get my hair cut, or colored, without getting the other done, especially when I am going out of town for a week or so, as I was that next day.) After some real huffy looks from the stylist, they finally decided they could work me in for both. Thank you, and I’m so sorry to have been an inconvenience as a paying customer. The stylist did good work, except for leaving my right ear full of color in spots where my partner could visibly see but I could not. The cut was fine, the color, except for the globs in my ear, was fine, and I was happy with the execution. The friendliness left something to be desired, as did the price($ 105). I’m sorry, but that’s a rip-off. I wanted to give it another try, so I did the next month. The stylist was a little friendlier, and perhaps because it was on a Saturday, I didn’t leave with any color in my ear. Apparently Saturday is the receptionist’s day off, as my stylist doubled as receptionist and often interrupted the cut with having to answer the phone. When I paid, and tipped him(15%, which is standard for standard salon service, not excellent or outstanding service), he looked at me as if he were insulted. He did hand me a small Aveda sample of hand lotion. I liked the cut, so I wanted to give it one more try. Third time did it for me. Stylist wasn’t as friendly and precise.(Side note: I don’t get people in their reviews on here who say they’ve been going to him for 20 years and how great he is… maybe I looked like someone he really hated or something.) He was in a little bit of a hurry, as he was leaving the next day to go out of the country. Color was again all over my ear, and luckily my partner had become pretty good at removing it for me. The few times I did try to engage the stylist, another woman of some British background interrupted, and as her voice carries, she made it very clear that she was running this or that half-marathon, and it was clearly a case of «those who have to boast that they’re good at something usually are not,» for if she’s a competitive runner, then so is my great-grandmother(disclaimer, again: I ran cross-country collegiately, as in 70+ miles weekly, so I’m pretty good at identifying others who run, and knowing the language… not calling this lady a liar, but as Shakira says, «hips don’t lie.») Most importantly, if she is doing those races, I didn’t need to hear about them, and I didn’t need to be interrupted with the little discourse I was able to pull from my stylist to hear about her adventures. This place just feels dated and old-fashioned. The customer bathroom looks worse than my first apartment’s bathroom… you know, the one when you’re first out of college. It could use a takeover by Tabitha. I hope while she’s at it she inspires this stylist to have a little more personality. I’m not saying be over-the-top, but sometimes you just want your stylist to be friendly and not aloof, and especially not insulted when I tip you properly. I think this place has a lot of potential, but it needs some reinvestment. It was never busy when I was there, as I think the largest number of other customers I saw while I was there seriously was two. I have since found my stylist gem here, but I really, really wanted to like this place. I hate that I didn’t.

5 stars for Linda! Her cuts are always spot-on and she does a great job with highlights. Yes, the salon costs more than the bargain places down the street, but Linda is so worth every penny. Hair crisis? Call her. Just need a reliable cut or color? Call her. She is delightful, lovely and practical. She won’t give you a hair cut you don’t want to maintain and the cut she gives you will last much longer than the average cut. I’ve recommended her to friends and family and they’ve all been pleased. She’s a doll. Not pretentious, just very good at what she does.

Regular customer of Alan since I moved to Chicago in 1998.(I followed him from his prior employer once he opened Styles.) Always frendly and always a perfectionist. And when I had enough hair that I thought it mattered, he did my color/highlights as well which always looked terrific. He earns my business everytime I come back. Have recommened to friends and a girl friend and they have all thanked me for the recommendation Now if he could only cure the ever growing bald spot on the top of my head, I’d give him a sixth star.

Hi, I’m Kellie and I’m an Aveda junkie. (Hi, Kellie). You’ll find me in here, not-so-secretly getting my fix. ‘Tis true, I haven’t yet tried any of the salon services. Who needs those when I have my pretty, pretty products? While they may not have everything under the Aveda sun, they have a hefty selection and almost always carry what I need. Yes, I may have a problem. Or do I?

I’ve been going to Linda at Styles for over 5 years and have always gotten great hair cuts. I don’t dye my hair, so I can’t comment on that, but she does a superb job with the cuts. My hair is wavy/curly and she has a very good understanding of what to do with it. Also, unlike a lot of stylists I’ve had in the past, she recommends products that fit my needs. I am very low-maintenance and hate products that leave residue in my hair. She always keeps that in mind when she does my hair and when she gives me tips on how to style it myself. Beyond her talent as a stylist, Linda is also a great conversationalist and is always very upbeat. I never feel like I have to struggle to figure out what to talk about. Styles is an Aveda salon so you can buy pretty much any Aveda product there. Also, unlike a lot of salons, they are open on Mondays. I usually go on weekends, but if I can’t do that, I go after work during the week. I believe they stay open until 7, which is pretty convenient. A cut(for women) is 50 bucks, which is pretty reasonable I think. I would definitely recommend Styles and Linda to anyone who’s looking for a salon.

I’d seen this place for years and when I needed to make a change I looked up Styles here on Unilocal and decided to try Eric. I LOVETHISSALON and LOVEERIC! Totally unpretentious, just skilled, talented people working in a well-managed salon! Can’t say enough good things about Eric! I get my color done every other month and when I leave I can’t even smell the color. I don’t have that feeling like I just had intense chemicals all over my head. When I wash my hair the next day, I don’t even see any wash-out. AMAZING! And Eric has found the perfect length my hair should be! Visiting Eric and Styles is always a great experience!

This place is great. A former stylist myself, I was pleased with the attention and thought my stylist, Linda, gave my hair. I went in a slight hot mess and walked out very chic. Cut and color for only $ 95? I dare you to find a price better than that a worthwhile salon! I would have given five stars if I hadn’t heard the entire Madonna catalog while I was there and if they had a website. Otherwise, kudos to them!

Ugh. I got a card in the mail for a very good deal on color at Styles. I put on my «I Support Local Businesses» romper(it’s in my mind) and went in for an all-over color. Not only was the staff totally distracted, my colorist(?) basically slopped color onto my head, stuck me in the corner, and set a timer. Nobody puts my glopped head in a corner — or they shouldn’t, anyway. Was it because I presented my promo card? If so, that’s crazy. I’m not a cheapskate! I was responding to *their* promotion! Anyway, my hair was fubared. Flat, dead, brittle, and gross. I had to go to another place a week later for help. They said my hair hadn’t been colored properly, that there was product underneath the color, and that it needed a deep conditioning in a bad way. They did it for me and now it’s okay. Skip this place, at least for color jobs.

After putting up with terrible haircuts from the budget places for years, I decided to give it a shot, and spend a bit more to see if it’s really worth it, and it is! I mean, my awkward curly, thin hair is not much hair to screw up, but it was nice to have someone cut it that totally knew what they were doing. I live just up the street, have walked by the place hundreds of times and liked the look of the place, and I was in desperate for a haircut, so I made a last minute appointment. They were able to accommodate within 30 minutes. Styles was worth every dollar. I was a little nervous that they weren’t going to make me feel comfortable while there, but my stylist Eric made me feel very welcome and chatted with me the whole time. He was very pleasant and did an excellent job and I will go back next time. I highly recommend Styles.

I have to give Styles 5 stars. After living in Lakeview and getting average haircuts from snobby, pretentious hair stylists with no personality at ridiculous prices for many years it was a blessing to get a salon style haircut from a professional and fun hairstylist. Their price is above average for the neighborhood in my opinion at $ 35 for men, but worth it. I highly recommend Styles but can only speak from a male experience. They seem to have a pretty solid female business as well though.
