I just finished one of their King Mr. Subs at my desk downtown — a few times a year, sometimes a few times a month, I stop by to get a sandwich through their drive-through window on my way from home to work in the Loop. Sometimes I call ahead and it’s waiting for me at the window. Rarely, I’ll walk in and eat at a table. For twenty years I’ve been a satisfied Mr. Sub customer. As I was just eating it, I thought to look up what Unilocal reviews have to say about a place that I like. I wasn’t planning to write any review until I saw some of the negative posts. I don’t doubt those reviewers — every kind of business has off days and off employees — and Mr. Sub is probably no exception. But those negative comments really run against what I’ve personally seen and experienced at this and many other Mr. Sub locations over the years, from Mannheim Road to Lincoln Avenue to Portage Park to the Loop. What’s set out in the bad posts just isn’t typical. The sesame seed bread really is great — the meats and cheese are tasty and presented generously, not like the stingy sandwiches at Subway, sold by means of misleading posters that exaggerate — and most importantly, the sandwich tastes great and is filling. Good texture, crunchy onions, good, fresh tomatoes, and all the rest. And the price is a bargain. If you are an epicure and want the best Italian Sub in Chicago, go to Bari Deli on Grand or Graziano’s on Washington during the business day, call ahead or stand in line, and you’ll get a great sub at a very reasonable price. I support them both. But if that’s not a handy option, if you want a really good, fresh, sub sandwich from many convenient locations at what’s frankly a bargain price, Mr. Sub has my top rating.

I had very low expectations for this place, but was pleasantly surprised. Don’t come in here expecting an artisan sandwich with gourmet toppings and you won’t be disappointed. You can buy mozzarella sticks per mozzarella stick-which is pretty cool. If you’re looking for a no frills place to get a sandwich, this is your place. And it’s dirt cheap! I got a large turkey sub for $ 6.50 and it was MASSIVE. You pay about a dollar more at Potbelly for literally half the amount of sandwich.

This is a cheap juice joint. Extensive menu means they are not the best at anything. You can get full for $ 5, but its not great food. Great for a quick cheap lunch, when you dont need to impress anyone.

I was very disappointed with my visit to Mr. Submarine, it ruined my whole day and I was very up set. I ordered 7 Mr. Sub sandwiches, paid 50 dollars and I felt like I was ripped off and did not get what I paid for. We were going to eat inside but my wife said it was way to cold in your restaurant(heat set so low), no big deal we decided to eat in the car instead. The problem is when we were eating in the car, we noticed all of our sandwiches did not have any tomatoes on them. The menu clearly states the sandwiches come with tomatoes. I went back in the store and told the lady that none of the sandwiches had tomatoes and her response was she did not put tomatoes because tomatoes are so expansive now a days. I paid for sandwiches with tomatoes and did not get any. I told her I would never go to that restaurant again(she did not care). She look like she may have been a polish lady and spoke with a accent. I spent 50 dollars there and was not given what I paid for. Also one sandwiches was suppose to have extra meat that I paid for and I did not get that either. You would think that if someone spends 50 dollars you would get the royal treatment but instead I got crapped on. Thank you very much!

Subs, Italian beef, wings, gyros, ice cream, shakes, fries. You name it and you can probably get it here. I stopped by for a chocolate shake which was $ 2.99 for 22 oz. It is hard to mess up a chocolate shake and that did not happen here. The shake was great and service was friendly. I look forward to stopping by this location that also has a drive thru to have some quick filling meals.

This location is horrible. Used to love their subs(not this location’s per say, but the chains, back in high school). On TWO different occasions, I walked in, walked up to counter to order, and the same unhappy looking lady was standing there counting her drawer. No acknowledgement at all. Not even a glance in my direction. After 4 minutes or so and a couple of well placed throat clears, y’know in case she missed the DING when I opened the door, or the presence of someone standing 3 feet away in an otherwise empty(go figure) store. Let out a «screw this» as I turned to leave, and even then there was NO acknowledgement. I would give them zero stars if I could. Will never be back again,(shame on me for giving them a second chance) and from the looks of the empty place on my two visits, I’m betting a lot of people feel the same way…

This location needs to have its sandwich makers go to the location downtown to learn how to make sandwichs, a refresher course at minimum. I went through the drive through recently, I ordered an italian and asked for a little extra italian dressing. The guy grabbed what looked like a clear ketchup bottle with a mix of vinegar and oil but he did not shake it first. I poured me straight oil… obviously he doesnt know a thing about italian dressing, nor have a clue. I also thought the cold cuts were extremely thin and so were the overall portions of meat.

I grew up eating mr subs. Over time the amount of meat and extras they out in have slimmed down(4 star), but they still taste the same. I only get the king mr sub with cheese fries. Can’t go wrong with a mr. Sub, take note this isn’t for those«watching» there waste line

Walked in and out. why? Because the lady working there was spraying fantastic cleaner on the microwaves directly above the meats and cheese that where uncovered letting the spray go on the food. Sorry, but as good as there subs are i dont feel like getting sick. Def not coming to this one again.

It’s so sad. i think these guys used to be open real late a lot of the time. And they close so much earlier now than from when I remember. But they have AWESOME subs. Fresh. Flavorful. Good quality ingredients. Really good bread. Even the fries are pretty good too. These subs are not«empty» the way Subway subs are.(you know… like you’re eating a whole lot of NOTHING). These subs are almost finger-lickin good. I usually get the turkey sub and or the seafood sub with a crabmeat salad. As scary as that sounds, it’s really good! Really. Truly. Very affordable and very delicious. I really wish there were more of these shops all over the city and that they stayed open much later for night owls like me.

I have been eating at this Mr. Sub for quite some time, and it isssss delicious! My favorite things to order are: Roast Beef & Turkey combo, Mr. Submarine, or the Steakburger with only Cheese and Lettuce. The Ham and Turkey combo isn’t bad either. They have many other choices additional to these as well, and plenty of things I haven’t tried yet. I also have to mention, this place makes some of the best damn french fries I’ve ever had. They are always fresh made to order, hot, and salty. They are the PERFECT pair to any sandwich you could get here. Hell — I would order their fries as a meal. In addition to their food being delicious, the place is open super late and they have a drive through. It makes for some delicious meals after a long night of drinking, or even a late night snack. And it’s great that you can drive up, get your sandwich, and go home — especially in the wintertime. And shoot, if you’re out riding your bike… just pull up in the drive through lane. They also serve walkers and bikers as well, so no need to let your bike sit outside while you go in to order. Of course, there is a reason why I am giving them only 4 stars — and I will explain that now. One thing that really irritates me is they never write anything down. There have been several times when my sandwich is screwed up, even after repeating my order to them 4 times. There have been instances where they repeat it back to me correctly, and still make the wrong damn sandwich. And it’s not like I am ordering anything complicated — king size Roast Beef & Turkey Combo with everything including mayo — and there are times when I get my sandwich and it’s just Turkey with no mayo only oil, or vice versa. Once I even got one with mustard on it — not cool. This is the only downside to the place… and honestly, I’ve been eating here on a regular basis(about once every 2 – 4 weeks) for about 8 years, and when you eat somewhere that frequently mistakes are bound to happen. Besides that, the place is good enough for me to continue eating there. I love it!

Very average. I had the Italian Sub and was not impressed. The meats were fine but not exctptional, and the bread was mediocre. I’d rather have a sub from a chain restaurant — even Subway. Service was not good or bad. I probably won’t go back unless someone I am with wants to go there.

Mr. Submarine has the best Italian sub sandwiches I have ever had! This is their signature sandwich, called by the same name. They use fresh sesame seed white bread and raw onions. You can get a regular or King size. The regular will fill you up just fine, but if you’re a man, or very hungry, get the King. The regular is a mere five bucks. The consistency of the subs is right on. The restaurant is pretty old school. There are a couple of arcade games, and a TV. My boyfriend and I have been there three times in the past two weeks. And we dream about going there when it’s just too darn cold to walk that far. The first time we went, a guy about 40 years old, leaped out from behind the counter and proceeded to dance and do a back flip to the beat of some mad techno they were playing in the kitchen. We will be back, many, many times in the future. I do hope to eventually try another sub.

Wow I really like this place… I mean for what it is, a sub shop… it’s awesome!!! The Turano Bread is the best for subs in my opinion. Its also alot better than that freshly made artifial tasting Subway bread… blahhhhhhhhh wow dude that bread is weird! Well my guy from work Tommie AKA dragon slayer(he plays dungeons & dragons) ran to the Mr Sub by work and picked us up some submarines… My mr Sub was awesome!!! I also got a chubby pickle on the side! You gotta get the chubby pickle! a great meal for under 4 bucks!!! Also Mr Subs usually are Hipster free… Shake & bake seal of approval!

Love this place. We frequent this joint on basketball game nights at school or when we are loafing around the neighborhood and need to eat! I really like the fact that they have something for everyone in my family. I love the subs…(did you know the turkey sub is actually better for you than a comparable sub at Subway… look it up!!) Okay so they don’t have all the weird extras on a sandwich like subway offers, but for what it has… it’s great. I DIG their turano bread. It’s WAY better than the«freshly made» bread at subway. My one daughter loves the chicken sub. It’s warm seasoned chicken on a sub. She orders it everytime we go there. I love the turkey or the roast beef, so does my hubby. My other two can get a hot dog or anything else that floats their boat that evening. Their fries are really good too. Nice n’ Crisp, and when making it a cheese fry… whooaaa watch out waist line. BUTSOGOOD. The lady who works there is VERYFRIENDLY. She knows us and asks about the kids if I am by myself, and literally comes out from behind the counter and will hug the kids when we come in as a family. I like that they have a drive thru too… when the kids are a sleep in the car or we just need a quick bite. I dig this place for their wider variety of a menu than most sub places, and for the cleanliness, friendliness, and overall quality of food.

The bread is like the wonder bread of sub rolls. meh. Without good bread, what is the point really? And the cheese? Pretty gross white stuff of ambiguous origin. The only veggies are shredded head lettuce, flavorless tomatoes and tons and tons of very thinly sliced onions. The onions might save these subs if they had anything else at all to work with, but alas, everything else is crap. It is hard to imagine that any place would make a Subway seem to be a better alternative, but Mr Submarine manages somehow to pull it off.

I used to go to lunch here all the time when I was a kid… and now that I’m pregnant I’m finding that I need to send my hubby here at least 3 times a week! I love the hot roast beef sub… it’s so yummy. I don’t understand the obsession, but it’s really good!

«Mr. Submarine another fine artery clogging place! They have a pretty good selection of really good and I really good fries. You can a host of subs and sammiches from the pepper and egg sub or just plain traditional turkey or meatball subs and they also have the standard meat laced ones too. Just as a not during the no school months be aware of the«gang banger fourteen year olds» hanging out like flies around… anyway, it’s got decent food for the cost and I’d recommend using drive thru and getting it to go.
