Awesome gyro sandwiches with hot/crispy steak cut fries! Interesting atmosphere, with disco lights, scarface posters and a fancy jukebox

Worst service ever for a great neighborhood with many awesome food choices but, sadly, Hellas is not one of them. Save your money(overpriced for your everyday Chicago-style grill food) and definitely don’t order for delivery(takes forever as they don’t know how to manage orders effectively or communicate that your food will take over an hour to get to you nearby location). Food is bland, service could be better especially to make you want to re-order or frequent the location. Apologies are not enough from management. They should recognize the feedback from customers and do something to improve, especially since it’s a family owned business and it would stink to see another business suffer because of their own children/family.

Hellas is NOT a Trixie & Chad joint serving trendy, over priced gastro pub food with attitude. Hellas IS reliable bar food that just makes me feel good. Some of my favorites(there are several): Cheddar Tots, Super Taco, Gyros Melt, Philly Steak, Fried Chicken Dinner, Apple Pie, Gyro Cheeseburger, Baklava. Did I mention Cheddar Tots? The Tzatziki sauce is so good I sometimes order extra just to keep in my fridge. Not all of the items are true to their name(the Super Taco is loosely based on a taco), but they’ve added their own twists much to my delight. Add to this six packs of beer at fair prices(for delivery), super speedy service and a $ 10 minimum and I’m a solid return customer. The few times I’ve dealt with them on the phone(usually Mike, I believe) have been positive experiences.

Considering the price, this place really does have great food. Delivery is great. It is a bit of a dive inside, but OK. We found the food quality to be quite high. If the tzatziki sauce isn’t home-made, it sure seems like it is. The Gyros are excellent. The Greek salad and Chicken salad are very good. The spanakopita(spinach pie) is to die for, excellent… definitely home-made. Don’t let the look of the place scare you.

HELLA’S RULES! Their cheese fries are the best I’ve ever had. And although it takes long to make the chicken pita, it is fresh and amazing. It is served hot and their tzatziki sauce is delicious.

I can’t comment on anything but the Greek fries, which were delicious, but probably put me one step closer to a heart attack. This place is a total dive. So much so that I felt kind of gross eating in there. I don’t think it would drastically hurt them, or their bottom line, if they at least got rid of some of the stained tiles on the ceiling.

Best gyros ever and they got steaky fries: crispy and fat outside and mushy on the inside

Oh you’re drunk? Oh you’re starving? Oh you would eat the face off of a small child if they looked porcine? Well Hellas is the place for you. This place has never let me down, well at least from what I’m told. I’m pretty sure I get the #1 and I always struggle finishing it. I don’t think these gents will be asking for a bailout anytime soon either. Hellas Hellas!!!

It’s been a little over a year since my first/initial review of Hellas Gyros so I thought it was about time to write an update. I came in tonight to pick up dinner for myself and my son and I of course wanted Gyros because Hellas makes one hell of a good Gyros, they always pile the meat on high and they normally put onions on too, however, boy, do I hate onions so I always say no onions. And, okay, I always check and make sure there are no onions on my gyros before I leave. Onions = Yuck! And, they put the cucumber sauce on the side, boy, do I like that! That Gyros was pretty incredible, however, when I tried to get a good picture of it for this review the Pita kept flipping over and boy was that irritating me. I’m such a perfectionist! And, because I love Mushrooms I got myself some crispy, delicious breaded mushrooms because Mushrooms are Da Bomb, especially when breaded. I also brought home a Fish Sandwich for my Son, and according to him it was one of the best fish sandwiches he has ever had, and I took a picture of this sandwich, it was truly a work of beauty, a crispy fish filet, with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce on this golden brioche bun. He loved it! So, to sum up this Update, Hellas Gyros still rates a 5 star review from me. With good reason, the quality stays consistent, the menu prices are competitive but stay fair, they offer Daily Specials, and they even offer delivery. So, if you find yourself craving some really great Gyros head on over to Hellas Gyros, located on Bryn Mawr, a few doors away from the red line stop. It’s definitely a trip worth taking…

I had a gyro craving today and my go to gyro place doesn’t deliver and I am lazy. This lead me to Hellas Gyros. I am not disappointed! I am glad I tried this placed. Their gyro was super yummy and huge! They part plenty of meat, onions and peppers on it and place the bread and sauce on the side which I liked. I was able to build my own. The sauce and bread were so good! The meat was perfect, moist and not dry. I thought the peppers added was a little strange but it did give it a little kick which was nice. I got fries with my gyro. The fries were good when you add salt and ketchup. I will definitely order from this place again.

This place is disgusting. The inside is gross. I don’t really remember what the food was like because I went over a year ago(it couldn’t have been that bad because I ate it), but I remember I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I’d probably give it two stars except for the obnoxious music they play so loudly on speakers OUTSIDE, late into the night. Seriously, turn it off. I feel bad for the people who live around this place.

Walking pass this place you would think it was a bar, due to loud music that you can hear outside. While walking, looking for something to eat i finally decided to stop in. Yes, the place needs remodeling, but nothing too serious. Its unique, and a different type of setting. I look forward to coming back to this place. Happy its in my neighborhood.

Taking a star off because I found my go-to(Zeus), and since there’s no reason now for me to come back here, I can’t give them more than two stars. Not that there’s anything wrong with Hellas, there’s just not much right about them. Again, my opinion, I’m very particular with gyros because once you’ve had one that was outstanding, is hard to accept any less. Not all foods are like this, I can eat average pizza or tacos to fulfill a craving, but not gyros.

When hammered or when ravenously hungry and going elsewhere just won’t work, their gyros can be pretty heavenly. Their tzatziki sauce is pretty yum. BUT, that gyros will live inside you the next three days. You will be reminded of it in the form of hot smelly burps which will pop up randomly over the course of the next couple days. It ain’t fun. BUT, if you’re sober and it’s of a reasonable hour outside you should definitely go elsewhere. Dirty, dumpy, dive of a place. It’s filthy inside and in need of a good steam cleaning. There are better gyros to be had in Chicago.(If someone were to steal the gyros guy to another business and set him up with a clean place with better ingredients, man, imagine the possibilities.

Awesome gyros. I think I could live on their Tzatziki sauce alone. Nice beer selection. Do yourself a favor though, and get your food to go or delivered. I have been coming here for over 10 years now and vowed never to set foot in there again. The owner’s son took over running the place a few years ago, and seems to be trying to turn the place into a Wrigleyville bar. Blaring loud music. Walls covered with flat screen TVs, all playing something different. I can deal with all of that actually. What I can’t deal with is the guy running the place loudly berating another employee in front of other customers. It was like he was trying to make the other employees gang up on him. I felt horrible for the guy. A couple of visits earlier, I witnessed a customer bring his food back to the counter asking if he could have his food warmed up, due to the fact that he received it cold. The same guy told the customer that if he didnt like it, he could just leave. And then he kicked him out. I don’t care if their gyros are made of 24 karat gold. I am not giving that guy another cent.

I have enjoyed this place for a long, long time. The gyros is wonderful and the saganaki is great. They have other great Greek stuff too. The new micro brew selection is wonderful as well, it’s an institution in the neighborhood, one that deserves attention. The remodel is a nice enhancement and no more bums hanging out in the place. My only concern, please, turn down the volume of the music. Tunes are good, but blaring isn’t.

I’ve been wanting to come here for a long time now as I’ve walked by a bunch of times when at my boyfriend’s place. We came in on Sunday afternoon and there were just a few other people there. I ordered a Gyro meal and my bf a cheeseburger meal. I loved that you could«pick your own pop» from the fridges — they had a great selection. It’s the simple pleasures in life! The portion sizes were large and my gyro was delicious! I had leftovers for dinner! My boyfriend’s burger was good but the bun was way to thick for the size of the burger. All in all — I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere was very different. I definitely plan to come back again!

Hellas Gyro is one of those long-time neighborhood joints that have been around for a long time, and continue to be at the top, because they consistently offer good food, convenience, but they won’t break your wallet for it! After a night out with friends, my boyfriend and I found had limited late night options in the proximity of Edgewater so he was ecstatic when he found that they close at 2 am on Saturday. For under $ 10, their gyro sandwich combo is a steal with a generous helping of flavorful gyro meat, fresh fries straight out of the fryer and your choice of pop(I also noticed a variety of beers in the fridge available for purchase). We pigged out and was still able to share the meal! If you crave greasy goodness, Hellas is the place to go to. Sit down so you can eat while your food is piping hot — they were blasting rock music this particular night(seems like a great surround sound system), but I noticed an updated jukebox if you’re in the mood for some tunes.

A gyro plate. If you consumed this in one sitting, you’ll die. It’s just too much food. Bang-for-the-buck, I was able to get three meals outa this guy – it’s amazing.
