I loved eating at that place the food was great the waitresses were friendly I even ended up falling in love with one of them she was a sweetheart I believe her name was Nancy. Thanks to her I use to eat there twice a week. There margaritas were the best and I loved there fajitas! To bad they close the restaurant now I won’t never get to see the love of my life(hoping she gets to read this) lol

We should have saw the lack of any customers as a sign. The food was as mediocre as it could possibly be. The salsas offered were really good! Definitely the best part of the visit. The cola offered was so flat we were unable to drink it. Mole was very sweet. Too sweet for my taste. Service was good and very friendly. I would not go back here nor recommend this to people.

We came here on a weeknight around 6:30PM, and we were the only customers the entire time there! And service was still slow! But the waitress was friendly. Chips, pico de gallo, and salsa are complimentary. Chips were stale; pico and salsa were both too spicy. We ordered the beef flautas, pastor burrito, and the fish filet with chipotle sauce. The beef flautas were probably the best thing we ate there — presentation was unexpectedly nice. My husband’s pastor burrito was wet and soggy in the middle, which resulted in the flour tortilla plastered to the plate. My fish was totally not fresh, and I didn’t finish it nor did I take it home(gasp! And I never waste food!). They must be going out of business or something.

June 16, 2014, i am sorry to say that our experience at Campeche was horrible to say the least. We have a party of 11 for a Birthday Lunch, we arrive at 12:25, having reservations for 12:30 and there is noone there, took ½ to get our guacamole, 1 hour for drink because our waitress was not only the waiter, but also the busboy and the bartender, she was not familiar on how to make a specialty margarita and martinis, so only those who order regular margaritas received their, the other three did not receive they drinks. Our lunch took over 1 hour to get to us and three people never got their food. Services sucked. we asked for more chips, never received a thing. food was not that great, very salty to say the least. We do not blame the waitress… we blame the managerial skills… of which there is none. Very disappointed. We will never go back.

The food was just fine, the rice and refried beans were a bit on the salty side. The salsa was good and the margaritas are ok.

Solid Mexican food. Great homemade salsas and mole. I always go with the streak fajita burrito suizo. Its great. My wife always gets the poblano stuffed pepper. Also great. Solid margaritas as well. Lots of street parking.

Exactly what you would expect from a neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Solid margaritas, good fajitas, excellent carne asada and tacos. Very friendly service as well. Guarantee you will enjoy your meal.

The place is the same but dropped the«e» from their name = Campech. I guess they needed to do some financial restructuring. Anyway, credit cards are accepted once again. The food’s still good. My only beef is they changed the lighting to bright white CFL’s. Too bright and garish.

Bad on so many levels — first off no air conditioning, bad choice when it’s 85 degrees outside. Microwaved queso fundito grease pile. Ordered 2 enchiladas ala carte ended up with an entire dinner, and they were microwaved as well. Pastor unremarkable but the corn tortillas were microwaved as well. Couldn’t even taste the onions and cilantro so it was basically a dried out corn tortilla with flavorless yet oddly crunchy filling. There’s a reason the place was totally empty and I should have taken that as a sign of what was ahead. Stale chips and salty salsa on the house also not recommended. Avoid fountain drinks due to total lack of carbonation. Server was nice.

I have always have good experiences here. I’m not sure why this place has crappy reviews. I love their margaritas(they’re yummy and strong). Their seafood is never overcooked, their appetizers are large and delicious, and I’m always leaving the restaurant with my stomach full and happy.

Just retuned after their modest renovation. Delicious food is still the same. Menu is generally the same with breakfast additions. Service is great during slow to moderately busy times. Only one bad service experience during a very busy time but understandable. All chicken items are tasty with very choice tender pieces. Salsas are amazing. We easily go through three servings. Pico de gallo is close to hot. Recommended.

Campeche has a 3.5-star average across 50 reviews right now, and I would say that that is just about right – slightly north of an average experience. The food is fairly standard for Mexi-merican, which is to say enjoyable but kind of boring. You will get the exact same fare at dozens of similar restaurants in any other neighborhood or suburb. What puts Campeche a half a notch above their competition is a cool, handsome dining room and gracious service. You can have a fun and/or relaxing Saturday night dinner here with friends or a date and still feel like you actually went out to eat rather than just«got some Mexican food.» There is plenty of meter parking in front, but you can also park for free right around the corner on Jersey. But watch out for the sinister fence wires lurking in the empty lot!

My review of 5−17−11: «I’ve eaten here dozens of times over the past 10 – 15 years, and I keep returning, either with just the GF or with a whole tableful of people for my birthday, because the place is just that consistently good. I highly recommend the sope with chorizo, a dish I don’t see on the menu at every Mexican restaurant. Service is usually prompt, always friendly. It helps that they don’t seem to have a lot of turnover among the waitstaff.» My(belated) update: When a bunch of friends and I went there in November 2011 for my birthday, most everyone seemed happy with their food, but the carne asada I had was a *seriously* tough piece of meat. My rating has therefore gone down a notch. Haven’t tried them since their recent renaming to Campech(no final«e»).

I am very strict about Mexican cuisine. Chicken flauta: B– I ordered one chicken flauta a la carte. It was tiny, overpriced, and not as tasty. (Skip these and have the flautas at Susupuato in Edgewater instead). Al pastor pork taco: D Steak taco: C– I also ordered a taco with Al pastor pork. The taste was awful. I could barely taste the seasoning; it was just awful stinky pork taste which I can’t even explain. For the first time in my life I had to tell a manager that I did not like a particular dish from the first bite. He first asked me if I had had al pastor before. I imagined he asked because pork has such a strong taste, but after he replaced it with a steak taco, I realized that it is the way they cook their meats, or just the cuts they get. I had to drown the steak taco in lime and salsa verde to be able to eat it. (For the best al pastor: Flaco’s Tacos) Rice: B+ Beans: B The rice was decent but it was a bit mushy. The refried beans were good but a little too liquid. Steak burrito suizo: C+ My friend’s steak burrito suizo looked like a crime scene. Its contents oozed out like stew. (for amazing steak burrito: Nuevo León, also La Pasadita [though they go heavy on the sour cream]) Horchata: B– Too heavy — seems like they use condensed milk. Needs more cinammon taste. (Better horchata at Susupuato, Flaco’s Tacos, La Pasadita, and Nuevo León) Service: A– The service was good overall, except that my friend had to ask for water about 3 times before he finally got a refill. Don’t let the ambiance, price and general food presentation in this place fool you! The taste and quality of the food is mediocre. Best place for upscale Mexican dining experience: Wholly Frijoles in Lincolnwood.(don’t miss their incredible ceviche and leg of lamb)

Been to Campeche a number of times. Fantastic as usual. Was just there this past weekend and found that the place may have been remodeled in the past year or so(we moved out of the area and then back). The restaurant is tastefully decorated(wasn’t bad before — just newer now). The wait staff was fantastic(attentive and joked around a bit). The food as usual was good too. We had a Vegetarian combo and a Steak Taco dinner. Both meals were cooked perfectly. We enjoyed the chips, salsa and pico as an appetizer along with a couple house margaritas. Although the place seems to have changed, the food and service were still excellent. We’ll be back when able(soon if we need to hit up Home Depot again!)

I have driven past Campeche several times and we finally tried it the other night. My husband and I both had a terrible Monday and we wanted some comfort food. We stopped in Campeche and it had a nice vibe. It was fairly busy for a Monday night. When you first sit down, you get chips and 2 salsas. The pico de gallo was amazing and it had lime juice squeezed in. Nice touch. The second salsa was good, it had a smoky flavor. Since we were having a bad Monday, we ordered margaritas and guacamole. My hubs had a giant frozen mango marg and I had the classic over ice. Both drinks were delicious and it enhanced our dining experience! The guacamole was very fresh and it was served in a fried tortilla bowl! The portion was gigantic and it was well worth the money. We even had enough to put on our entrees. I had the 2 steak taco dinner. Everything was fresh with a good looking presentation. There was a lot of steak on the tacos and it was flavored perfectly. My husband just had a quesadilla and he really liked his as well. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Campeche is a hidden gem up on Lincoln not too far from our place. I will definitely be back when I’m craving upscale Mexican!

I have not been to Campeche since they moved from their Wrigleyville Location over 10 years ago. The food is exactly the same as I remembered it. For those of you who have not read my reviews, I love Mexican food. I take very few things seriously in life, but Mexican food is at the top of that short list. Not only do I love dining at all of the wonderful Mexican restaurants Chicago has to offer, I love to cook Mexican food as well. Campeche doesn’t crack my top 10 list of Mexican Restaurants in Chicago, but it was pretty damn good. The Décor at the Lincoln Ave. location is tacky but bearable. The lack of lighting was kind of absurd. I thought I was going to need a flashlight to see the menu. The mural of Toucans sitting in a tree was kind of odd as well, but like I say, it’s all about the food. We started out with a plate of Campeche’s Grande Nachos. It consisted of Baked chips, melted cheese and beans that were covered with Guacamole and lettuce. It was your basic Nacho appetizer, but it was delicious. For my entrée I went with the Steak Burrito Suizo covered in Mole sauce. I have never been a huge fan of the steak at Campeche. I was hoping this location would be different. The steak tasted bland. I guess I’m used to all of the different marinates and glazes that you find in other Mexican restaurants around Chicago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good cut of Steak, it’s just a bit on the bland side. But whatever flavor the Steak lacked was made up for by the delicious and decedent Mole Sauce. The Burrito was drenched with a combination and Cheese and Mole sauce that was mouth watering. This may be some of my favorite mole sauce in town. It turned a average Burrito into a work of delicious work of art. The bottom line on Campeche is this: It’s a bit over priced, but the Mole sauce is worth the trip alone. It turned out to be a beautiful night with my wife and two of our best friends. And isn’t that what dining out is all about? Great food shared with wonderful people.

Short and simple today, folks. We got the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good –Fresh salsa brought up with chips to begin any meal. –Anything al pastor; it was delicious. –Flautas were small, but arguably the best thing I ate on the menu. The bad –I tried a little bit of everything that my family got and I wasn’t impressed. The ugly –Overpriced especially for portion size. –Our waitress was singing. The end.

Campeche is seriously over priced. We stopped in after a movie for a late lunch and were stunned by the prices. I don’t mind paying for memorable meals, but at least knock my socks off with a bit of flavor before you make me dig deep into my pocket book! The chips came with a salsa and a pico de gallo. The pico was fine, but the salsa had a bitter taste, that we just didn’t like, but that was personal preference. I ordered the tampiquena and Christopher had another steak dish that had an enchilada with mole sauce. My steak was rather under seasoned but ok. The refried beans were your typical refried gruel that you get at any taco joint. The rice was bland, but made classy by being molded into an inverted cup shape. I guess that is why they charge so much for their food. I had an ok margarita. I guess the cactus stem glass was worth jacking up the prices too(not). The service was fine, but we will probably not be back. Not nearly enough bang for the buck and not enough atmosphere to make me forget the sticker shock.

Even if it did take me forever to review it, this is easily one of my favorite Mexican restaurants anywhere. It’s ironic to think each time I’ve dined here, I’ve only been for dinner, since I’ve always suspected this place would work well for lunch. Great dinner and lunch specials, and awesome alcoholic drinks(I’ve gotten both margaritas and banana daiquiris here, and loved them). Not to also mention their horchata more than passed my basic test of what I’m looking for in one. Finally, I absolutely love the fact that you can get their food items a la carte, unlike at the majority of Mexican restaurants I’ve eaten at. I won’t disagree with Charlie that their overall prices are above average, but other than for their breakfast items(which are definitely overpriced!!), I don’t think most food items here are that expensive. Especially considering the quality of the food, and the fact they have decent food specials for both lunch and dinner. Finally, I’ll note that for anyone who’s looking for a place that has a decent variety of cheap Mexican breakfast food(this doesn’t have much variety in that aspect), El Norte at Bryn Mawr/Ridge/Broadway would be a better choice to hit up. It should be testament enough that one of my late grandmothers once ate here, and loved this place. *does the tone a la Ferris Bueller at the end of the movie* Now go here, and stop reading the rest of the reviews!
