This is a great place for sushi! Service is impeccable and the sushi is delicious. Tried the hot wings which were also tasty. Place was not busy, which was a plus. Will definitely be back. The Sushi A platter was more than enough to make a meal of and was outstanding.

This is my second time coming here, the first time was 1.5 years ago. Salad dressing was tangy and crunchy, sushi rolls, depending on who rolled them, would either fall apart or hold together. The rice bowls and fried rice dishes were very well seasoned, miso soup slightly lacking in explosion of flavor, but overall it was not too bad.

I’m an old man and love complaining about things in general. Restaurants tend to be an easy target for my grumpitude. Matane is absolutely amazing though. I literally can’t stop eating. If someone is reading this, please come drag me out. Seriously, I just dove into my third White Roll, which, by the way, is the best I’ve ever had. In any event, I give this fine restaurant 6 out of 5 stars. Not sure how the math works out but I’m sticking with my 6 rating.

Poor customer service. Don’t ever order seafood soup: DISGUSTING… They cut the whole entire fish(organs included) and threw it in the soup with a giant over cooked octopus. Seafood overlooked, other veggies under cooked. They also complain if you want to use your groupon, because they claim to lose money on Groupon. They argued with me about groupon & didn’t even care that $ 30 soup was JUSTHORRIBLE. Will never go again … Won’t even pass by… YUCK, YUCK, YUCKKKKKKYYYY

A friend and I grabbed a quick dinner at MaTaNe after hearing good things about their chirashi and sushi rolls. The MaTaNe roll is fantastic. They light the roll on fire when they serve it to you and the fire slowly dies down. I think the process leaves a smoky taste in the sushi roll, which I enjoyed. Everything else on the menu is pretty standard compared to other sushi restaurants like Wasabi or Kampai. However, I would come back just for the MaTaNe roll and chirashi here.

We visited on a Wednesday night and practically had the place to ourselves. I can’t understand why the restaurant was not packed, as everything was fantastic. I had a bento box and our table also ordered some additional sashimi and sushi rolls. If you are in the mood for good sushi look no further than Matane.

We continue to get the best sushi and Japanese dishes at this little restaurant in our neighborhood. They have added bento boxes to their menu which are great to eat in or take out(you must try the spicy shrimp)!! And the sashimi is so fresh!!! They have the most friendly sushi chef and staff in town! We love this restaurant!

Great food, good service, reasonable prices. Sushi is 9⁄10. Salad is 10⁄10. Service is 9⁄10. Great to have a quality Japanese(Korean too!) restaurant in the Chesterfield area that’s actually worth going to!

I Stepped in for some of what I’d been reading about, and this place has the goods! Fresh fish, they even advised me of what had just arrived and described the quality so that I could make a decision to try something new and I was not disappointed. The nigiri was excellent and the various rolls were also delicious. Trying to remember the names but they escape me at this point. You’ll get a nice clean experience here and you can see they pay attention to the details. Overall great place… service was also impeccable!

Ms T and I used a dining coupon at MaTaNe recently. We have been trying some of the many sushi places that we have around us. I have no expertise so normally stick with a few nigiri and maybe we share a roll. Ms T is not going to eat the raw seafood, so looks for teriyaki or something fried. I sampled four nigiri on this occasion. I always enjoy the yellowtail and the maguro. On this occasion the maguro was excellent although not toro/otoro grade. I also had white tuna and salmon which were fine. Ms T ordered the Tempura A Combination with Shrimp and Vegetables. It was a nice presentation and was very good. Until I develop a sense of how to rate sushi, I can only just go by my instinct. I have not had enough visits to MaTaNe(1) and Ocha(1) and Sushi House(2) to distinguish. My sense is that MaTaNe and Ocha are a little better than Sushi House, but I rate them all the same until I try more. I probably need to be ordering chirashi to really sample the fish quality better. And then I assume it may vary day-to-day.

I’m writing this review after having lunch with a close friend I took to celebrate his birthday. I selected MaTaNe based solely on the Unilocal reviews I read and I’m happy that they were spot on. Miso soup came out first and helped warm us on an extremely frigid day. Next was a salad which I have to say was the best salad I have ever eaten at an Asian restaurant. The waitress recommend Maguro nigiri as it had just come in this morning. It was superb. I also had a piece of Shiro Maguro nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. Hot green tea helped to warm us, too. I’m certainly glad that we went and will definitely comeback as well as recommend MaTaNe to my friends.

This place is great! Sushi and bulgogi are amazing. Even brought our 9mo old and they cut up some avocado for him. Great service and friendly staff. We visit frequently for lunch and dinner.

My dad is a well known sushi chef in St. Louis so I know my Japanese food. The miso soup was perfect, along with the hot tea. Miso soup and tea are surprisingly ruined at a lot of other places. I ordered a spicy tuna and spicy scallop roll. The sushi was great. The rice to filling ratio was perfect. The server I had was a young gentleman and he was very courteous. I received my food fast also. Prices were reasonable, although I came in for lunch so I don’t know about dinner prices. (I came back for dinner and prices were your typical prices) I’ll be coming back to try the udon, because no place in St. Louis has figured out how to make real Japanese udon yet. (I came back and the udon was on point! I love it love it!) Another note, this is one of the only places that serves in-house made tamago. If you haven’t had in-house made tamago(sweet egg omelet), you’re missing out. Just make sure it’s your last piece of sushi – it is traditionally a «dessert» sushi. Enjoy!

Lately, Husband and I have been on the chirashi tour of STL. Chirashi is an artful presentation of sashimi and vegetables over a bed of rice. The rice often has some chopped radish in it to give it some extra flavor. Most places around here put multiple pieces of their top sellers(tuna, salmon, yellowtail) and maybe one piece that is a little out of the ordinary(octopus is most frequently seen here.) Matane gave us everything they had in their case! I had a great time trying all of the different fish… some I loved, some I didn’t care for. But the point was that the chef gave us the opportunity to try them all. The cuts were perfect such that the fish melted in my mouth practically. Only two minor things that I would change: the rice was plain sushi rice, and there is another place that I like to go that puts avocado in their chirashi. Neither of those things would keep me from returning though. I don’t eat that much of the rice anyway, and the chef was so friendly that I“m sure he would put some avocado on there next time if I ask for it.

Chirashi is my current kick when it comes to sushi restaurants. I really like giving the sushi chefs something of an open invitation to impress me with their creativity and the quality of their food. I’ve only been disappointed once but I’ve been amazed a lot of times. This was one of those times! I asked the sushi chef about what he would put in chirashi when I first walked in. He pointed out everything in the cold case at the sushi bar and I knew I was«in» for the experience. We also started with a vegetable tempura and steamed gyoza. The appetizers are where they lost the fifth star. The gyoza were pedestrian and the tempura was a bit greasy — not to my liking. The chirashi arrived and I was instantly impressed. There were 2 – 3 pieces of everything in the case — quite a bit more fish than I expected. All very fresh and sliced against the grain such that it virtually fell apart when it hit my mouth. The only down-side is that the rice was just plain sushi rice. Lots of places add oshinko(pickled radish) and kampyo(reconstituted dried gourd) to kick it up a few notches. I will most certainly be back and I will most certainly have the chirashi again!

I recently went back for dinner and I had an equally great experience. We ordered a different roll that came to our table in flames – and yes I get it for the cool effect but also because it gives it that wonderful tender taste to the fish. We got the udon entrée again – I just can’t get enough of this dish! Their broth is so light but savory – how do they do it? They also bring it to you with that ladle looking spoon and the red pepper flakes which just makes it that much better and more authentic. We also ordered an appetizer – spicy fish salad I think it’s called? It’s basically fish(sashimi style) with some greens mixed with that korean style sweet red spicy sauce – its the amazing sauce that makes this dish. It’s obvious this place pays attention to detail with everything they do.

Yes, great service, BUT very average food. Tempura shrimp’d items OK, some hot food items like yakisoba had an OK flavor as well, but be aware that the gyoza is from a frozen bag and the sushi bar fish is just not top quality. If you decide to eat here, do not have high expectations. The hamachi and salmon had a slightly tough, less than sushi-grade texture. Scallop was slightly fishy and not firm. Maybe it’s good for St. Louis, but none of this would not pass on either coast. Drats — way too much mayonnaise-action in the 2 hand rolls I ordered. Scraped a bunch of it away. The noodles in the yakisoba were overcooked, almost mushy, and sitting on way too much eel sauce. Wait… eel sauce?! Whatever, we were hungry so we ate it all anyway. Glad the waiter didn’t pull the always-cheesy, «I see you didn’t like it at all :)» bit, because we actually didn’t love it, we were just hungry! Dragon roll(shrimp tempura w/eel, etc) was OK, nothing special. Looked a little unappetizing drowned in eel sauce and red Sriracha. Again we ate it up ’cause we were hungry, not ’cause it was awesome or anything. We did get fair warning that our sushi was going to take 25 – 30 minutes because of two large parties on either side of us, so we received comp’d house salads, miso soups and edamame. Nice, and probably reason I’m giving Matane 3 stars instead of 2. The large Asahi beer we ordered was served up nice and cold. The best part of the meal. The profit margins here must be pretty strong, considering it’s not a cheap menu and the food costs are clearly pretty low for a sushi establishment. Craving Japanese? This place *might* barely hit the spot. Just barely.

Great service. Our first time and very impressed given we were nervous about it being new. Totally recommend the MaTaNe or the fire roll… absolutely wonderful… I may never order anything else. The surprise of soup or salad before the meal and ice cream after was a great touch. Definitely coming back soon!
