They had our favorite chowder out of all the seafood restaurants we went to in Southern Rhode Island. It was thick and seasoned perfectly. Like other customers experience we went later in the evening and they were out of some menu items but what we did have was great. Clams, scallops, and fish were all excellent and cooked perfectly. Fries were great too. A real bathroom would be nice but wouldn’t keep us from having another trip when we are in the area to hopefully get to try more items on the menu.

I visited during the early part of the season on a Sunday about an hour before closing and they were out of a lot of stuff like clam bellies, clam strips, and scallops. I ended up getting some clam cakes, grilled chicken sandwiches, and clam chowder. Everything was really good. Chowder was creamy and had a good flavor, grilled chicken sandwiches were fresh and pretty good sized and the clam cakes were really good. They are pretty slow getting your food ready but they only have one guy working the grill and one guy working the window. Either they need to stock up better on food or I need to visit at a better time. They definitely need to get one more person to help make the food because two people working is just not enough.

Great place to grab a bite. Friendly folks and tasty food. Came down from Boston and got some plates(fried strips and scallops) with the wife after a beach day down the road. They were outstanding, came with a mountainous heap of delicious fries, and very reasonably priced. Would recommend and definitely come again.

Two stars total — four stars for location, nice people working there, and one person in our party thought the fried clams were ok. One star for the food. Rest of us had fried scallop plate, fish and chips, fish sandwich and onion rings. The fries were very good. The o rings ok. Skip the rest.

Unilocal says they open at 8:30 am but they were not open until 12. We were the first ones there on a sunny beautiful Sunday and they were out of fish! Not great for our friends who don’t eat clams! The fried clams were pretty good, strips too and kids like the chicken fingers, not dry and overdone like so many others. I would come back but was disappointed about no fish.

Best clamcakes and chowder I have ever had! The prices are reasonable. The deck has a wonderful view and is nicely shaded. It can get very busy at times, but the food is well worth the wait.

I’ve been to Johnny Angel’s a few times and it’s always been good until last night. We went around 6:00 on a Wednesday night and there wasn’t a mad rush for food. We ordered off of the hand written board only to find out that they were out of bellies and scallops. How hard is it to erase the white board when you run out? I put in my order, clam cakes, chowder, fish and chips, clam strips and a fish sandwich. Order comes out in a reasonable amount of time and the view from the deck is great. So far so good, until my name was called for the food. What happened Johnny? The fish and chips looked like fish and cheep, 3 tiny pieces of fish and a small handful of fries swimming in a white styrofoam box, the clam strips were ok but lacking in the french fry department. The clam cakes were greasy and awful. The fish sandwich ok but the size of the fish filet was tiny. All the platters were on the greasy side as if the fryer was not hot enough. Plus they were out of tarter sauce? The chowder was great. The prices are usually reasonable for the size of the portions, maybe Johnny was running out of fish and was stretching his supply, if that was the case he should have dropped the prices or wiped his white board. Love the view, used to love the fish/clam cakes, oh Johnny, not sure if I will be back.

With the word«clam» in its name and having just read about this place in Mike Urban’s book«Clam Shacks», I drove to it with high expectations. I say drove to it because its location isn’t a place many people would come across«by chance». It’s frequented mostly by local residents and beach goers at the Charleston Beach. Johnny Angels is located at the end of Charleston Beach Road, right before the beach parking lot. Unfortunately I don’t know if Johnny was out the day I visited, but those were some of the most greasy fried clams I’ve ever had. I’m talking extra greasy. And I’ve had lots of fried clams from various clam shacks over the years. The clams themselves were probably OK but it was hard to tell behind so much grease. The french fries were also some of the greasiest french fries I’ve ever had too. This place is small and a large outdoor deck is your only option for dining. The deck is situated in the middle of a gravel parking lot overlooking local marshland and waterways. There’s a bees nest of activity going around with boaters putting their boats into the water and children coming from the nearby beach. There’s even a kayak rental place located next door to Johnny Angels. But the parking lot is nice, clean, and enjoyable under an umbrella(if you can grab a table with an umbrella). I don’t know if this place really has a reputation for it’s fried seafood. Maybe it does. But lots of little kids in front of me in line were ordering french fries, soda, ice cream and that sort of stuff. The shack perhaps makes a terrific beachside snack bar, but based on my 1st experience I’d think twice about ordering fried seafood next time. Cash only. Pepsi or Diet Pepsi only. Closed in the winter. Prices were slightly on the high side.
