This place is great. Like being invited to someone’s house. Friendly service. Solid food. I would recommend taking the extra few minutes drive from downtown to make it here to enjoy the food and environment.

Eating here was definitely an experience. I work right down the street from this place and was really craving fried chicken for lunch one day. I read the two reviews for Walt’s and got curious. I’m really glad I went. The restaurant itself is very bare bones, just a few tables and a television. To call this place casual would be an understatement. When I walked in, I definitely got the feeling I was the first non-regular they’d seen in there in a while. The owner was very friendly, and managed to put me at ease even though I’m a bit shy and awkward in unfamiliar places. The food itself is EXCELLENT. I ordered the fried chicken with rice and black-eyed peas, and my companion ordered the fried fish. Both were divine. If you’re someone who’s into real, down-home Southern comfort food and not picky about atmosphere, Walt’s is really worth checking out.

Unbelievable that this has one review. 100 yards from Franklin Street but worlds away. A historic meat and three type of spot. We got the fried chicken, a side of culture, friendliness unmatched, ice tea, Carolina blue surroundings and unbelievable hush puppies. All for 7 bucks, incl tax! Id say 95% of Chapel Hill doesn’t know this place exists. But they should. Go here instead of Mama Dips if you really want the southern experience. Go go go. Cash only, decent parking, friendly service and awesome food!

Walt’s broke my heart. Exactly the type of place I like to try: a small local establishment serving food with a local flavor; Walt’s promised a lot. Small and off the beaten path: check. Floor tiles worn, torn in parts, and uneven: check. Scuffed walls with a hodgepodge of local memorabilia and announcements: check. Television in the corner with an over the air network focusing on local sports: check. A whiteboard with a hand written menu of the day’s offerings: check. Locals discussing their various interests, news of the day, who cheated at cards the day before, and general joking around: check. Food served on unadorned plates and with plastic utensils: check. The occasional chipped coffee mug: check. Simple, basic, no-frills food at a price that’s a steal: check. Employees that make you feel like a member of the family: double check. Five stars for those delivered promises. Walt’s nearly has it all, and teases you with it, the cad. But alas, my heart is broken owing to Walt’s recent sanitation scores. Despite my disappointment, I’m still giving two stars because of the promises which Walt’s does deliver well. And also because of my hope Walt’s will unceremoniously dump those rude, heartless, selfish scores into the fires of perdition for daring to interfere with my affection for everything that Walt’s promises but hasn’t quite achieved.
