COLDSIDESANDTERRIBLESERVICE! My bill was 69.09 for 3 people and 2 of us shared! The chicken was so small we were still hungry, the fried okra was so small it wouldn’t even be enough for 1. I didn’t want to make a ruckis so I called and spoke to a manager who yelled at me and told me it was my fault! The waitress refused to serve use and told us everytime we needed something that she was busy. We had to get up and go get her to order a desert! When I talked to the manager I asked her to make it right and she said no and wouldn’t even apologize for the service and food! I will never eat here again and recommend you save your money! Go to Cracker Barrel for better food, it’s cheaper and they know how to treat people! This is sad cause Mama Dips used to be great food and had great service! Not worth the trip, the money, or the time! Cracker Barrel all the way for me and should be for you!

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Sadly, the menu doesn’t have as much on it as it used to. Prices have increased and food quality has decreased. The hostess was«chilly». There was a full staff and only a few occupied tables. I ordered Fried Green Tomatoes as my appetizer and it arrived AFTER I got my meal. The biscuits were hard, my husband’s tea ran dry and as for dessert, there was very little t choose from. My love affair with Mama Dip has come to an end.

Sorry but service fell flat for us. With 6 at the table one of our party received NOFOOD, even after informing our waitress! The manager quickly took care of the mistake himself, but by then the rest of us had finished our food. Also, biscuits were hard but molasses was good. Décor cute and nice outdoor seating for good weather. Will try another place next time.

Took my in-laws when they visited because they wanted to have some traditional southern cooking. The restaurant is decorated in adorable antiques and feels like you are sitting in your grandmother’s kitchen. The food is nothing flashy or presented in any extraordinary way, but it is delicious! If you are looking for great homemade fried chicken with all the fixings this is the place to go! The staff are always very polite and helpful and the food is always delicious! We will definitely be back again!

Good southern food… just not seasoned… I generally cook my collards with ham hocks or seasoning meat like thick bacon slabs… these were just plain olé collards. I had to add salt and hot sauce… my trout was also not seasoned. This was an underwhelming eating experience. The pancakes were excellent which is more than I can say for the big dry rubber tire we had at Big Eds Country Kitchen. I might try Mama Dips again… perhaps this was a 1 time miss…

This was great! We had hush puppies, fried chicken, and the chicken and dumplings. The service was very good — friendly and prompt. Easy parking. Very clean.

I got a delivery order. I ordered chicken fried steak with 2 sides: mac and cheese and potato salad. Price was a little up there. Potato salad and mac and cheese portions were a little little for the $ 9.50 price tag. Steak was large enough and covered in gravy. It all tasted very good. The mac and cheese was like melt in your mouth good and definitely southern style potato salad had a sweet tinge to it that was unexpected but welcome. Steak was great, very tasty and good gravy. I ordered at 6:27 and the Web site said it would be delivered at 7:17. It arrived at 7:14. Not bad at all. I’ll be ordering again, for sure.

Overrated. Overpriced. I went here thinking it was a Chapel Hill institution. It’s one of Michael Jordan’s favorite spots. I figured that if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me. However, as many other Unilocalers have noticed, the quality has gone way downhill over the years. I can’t speak to how it used to be, just to how it is now. I got the fried chicken dinner with sides. Their fried chicken is worse than kroger’s fried chicken. Has less flavor and is soggier. I don’t even like Kroger fried chicken. Sides were just ok. Average Mac and cheese. Average biscuits. Everything was plain avg or below avg, except the price. The price was way above avg. One of the few places in America I actually regret going and spending money at.

I’ve been in CH for about 4 years now and I finally got to try this place out. I was really excited because I was craving Southern food like crazy so I had pretty high expectations. I was a little disappointed with their portions for how much we were paying for. I got their chicken fried steak combo that came with my choice of corn, coleslaw, and 2 pieces of cornbread. It was decent, although the cornbread was a little dry. My boyfriend got the chicken + dumplings combo w/okra and mac+cheese, with 2 pieces of biscuits. The biscuits were dry, as well, but overall, pretty satisfying. Again, the portion for this combo was pretty small, as well. I enjoyed this place because it did satisfy my cravings; however, I’m not sure if our meals were worth the price. Service was okay; waiter was nice, but could have been a little more attentive.

I’ve been meaning to try Mama Dip’s for years and finally got around to it. I went in with high expectations and hopes, based on some word-of-mouth I’d heard for a long time. Sadly, I left disappointed. Service was very friendly, and the restaurant has a warm, family vibe to it that I liked. It’s the kind of mom & pop restaurant you want to support in a town increasingly dominated by corporate/chain dining options. I had lunch there — ¼ BBQ chicken place with yams, lima beans, and cornbread. All of it was good, but nothing really stood out as exceptional. And considering the combo cost nearly $ 12, I left feeling underwhelmed. And hungry. I’ve paid about half that at other BBQ places for the same amount of food — or more. Given the price, I expected slightly bigger portions or at least food that stood out as something amazing. I’m glad I finally tried the place, but don’t think I’ll be back.

Always good food. Chicken fried steak today was very good. Pinto beans and mashed potatoes are always winners. Another had the meatloaf and was equally as good. Then we tried the chocolate pecan pie with ice cream. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

This is a delayed response. Had heard about this place for quite awhile and we finally decided to drive down on a Sunday afternoon. We got there after the church rush and were seated quickly. I need to do these reviews right after being at the location because being chronologically gifted I now have forgotten what we had to eat. But I do know I ate everything that was put in front of me including dessert. The only specific thing I do remember was that the service was a little spotty and they were slow keeping my iced tea replenished. I know I drink a lot of it, but that equals out to Mary who only drinks about half of hers so never gets refills. This kept my rating from being a 5-star. To sum it up, we know we will be returning and are just looking for a day that we can take a trip in that direction again. I do remember that there many more items on the menu I wanted to try. But since I don’t remember what I had though, anything I chose will be a surprise!

If you want old-fashioned, no-frills Southern cooking, this is the place to go. Everything tastes homemade and prices are reasonable. And the friendly staff makes it that much better. Love Mama Dip’s!

Good comfort food but nothing special. Too overpriced for what it is. It’s the kind of place you only go once; just to try it. That’s it.

I think that the 3 star rating mama dips currently has on Unilocal is a bit unfair. i’ve been here several times. the food is always delicious with fast, friendly service. the only reason i can’t give mama five stars is because the prices seem really high for the type of food they are serving in the atmosphere in which they are serving it. the menu and restaurant itself has a very casual laid back vibe, but their prices don’t quite reflect that. nonetheless, everything i’ve had on their menu is absolutely delicious, and embodies southern food at it’s finest! i would especially recommend the sweet potato biscuits, the fried green tomatoes, and bbq chicken! this is a fun place to bring out-of-towners to give them a truly southern dining experience.

55 picked this place for Breakfast, which was nice because I wanted to eat here and I’m Glad to have checked this place out! Nice Looking, Inside and Out, they have a Private Parking lot which is rare for this part of Chapel Hill! Staff were Very Polite and our Server was Very Friendly and helpful! Link Sausage(side) 2 links! Flavor was Good as in 3 Unilocal stars Good! Country Ham Biscuit — - — the Country Ham was Good though NOT any better than just Good the Biscuit(Bread part) was just ok, NOT A-OK just ok! Hash Browns were POOR! Tiny Portion, though they were so Poor I was glad not to have more!

Service was good, our waiter was friendly and funny. The fried chicken was awesome, the Brunswick stew kinda so-so, the chopped pork BBQ sandwich was delicious and served on a slightly-crunchy buttery roll. Definitely would recommend!

Southern cooking at its best. Seriously, can’t get a while lot closer to thinking you’re grandma is in the kitchen. A little overpriced though, but that’s probably Chapel Hill relevant.

No matter what I’ve tried on the menu I always leave happy and often with some leftovers. Mama Dip’s knows how to bring out the comfort food any day of the week! This time I had the smothered pork chops and should have paid attention when reading the menu(the plural in pork chops)! I was surprised when the plate arrived with two very large chops on it. I couldn’t possibly eat it all and leave room for dessert too. I had the butter beans and squash casserole with it and I don’t think one item on my plate was better than the other, it was all delicious! I topped it off with peach cobbler and ice cream. I ended up bringing half of it home too along with some of my sides and one chop, so had a nice lunch the next day. I forgot to mention the bread basket, cornbread, biscuit and yeast rolls all went quickly too. How is it that I don’t get here more often?! The service was friendly and quick. You just can’t go wrong with a visit to Mama Dips!
