Hands down the best sushi place in Carlsbad. Great service, nice décor. Don’t miss the caramelized eggplant

Great ambience. Kid friendly, even with our kid, not so friendly. I had the duck tacos, the first bite was delicious, but the wrappers were soggy and started falling apart. The pineapple fried rice was yum. Husband got the bento and enjoyed that. I’d like to come back another time when I can enjoy it a little more.

I picked this location based solely on the Unilocal reviews, and was not disappointed. The sushi was fresh and delish. I liked the options that were non-fish as well. My husband got rib tips and liked them. The location is a bit away from the rest of town, making parking great but walking afterwards not as interesting. I loved the little decorative touches that the restaurant had, with fish on the mirrors in the bathroom, and glass«bubbles» hanging from the ceiling. Someone took their time, and you could tell the owners cared about the cleanliness. The service was good, though not great. it was also VERY loud, we were there for dinner and though it didn’t seem packed the noise level made it at times hard to hear each other. In the end this is a high-quality high-price sushi restaurant that I’ll probably be back to when I want to impress someone.

The décor is cute, the glass bubbles are my favorites, I want them in my house! Sushi is delicious, summer roll is my favorite and the presentation is perfect! He garlic edamame is usually always delicious my most recent experience was a little salty than normal but still delicious! The service has always been friendly and helpful which is also a pleasure since it’s a little pricey.

When I first turned into the parking lot I was immediately attracted to the sign in blue that seemed to have a japenese type style to the print. The outside had trees with lights very well decorated. I couldn’t wait to go inside. My friend made reservations for 5:30 she said it gets busy. Service was amazing our waitress really took care of us. I wish I could give her a shout out but I forgot her name. They have a sushi bar you can sit at and watch the chief make your sushi or other dish right in front of you which I thought was neat. The bar area is so enticing the way it’s lit, and all the other lights that are focusing in that direction. Love the light bulbs and other décor throughout the restuarant. Food: I ordered off the robata grill– chicken breast, and asparagus both delicious but small portions for what your paying but all apart of the experience right?! I had their California rolls which included 8 rolls, delicious. Food was good. But I have to admit I was still hungry but there was nothing else I wanted to try. Experience: From the beginning we were helped and given great service. We weren’t waiting a long time or have to ask for refills on drinks.

This place looks amazing. Service is great and the appetizers and cocktails are wonderful! Most sushi bars do not have that so there is a hype. For the food the menu is refined compared to their sister chain love boat. Being a love boat fanatic I wish the emphasis was still on the sushi. Sadly that was not a substitute for the ambiance and cocktails in my book. It did serve well as a fancier dinner for a friends birthday. Keep note that the party life feels a little bit more a live here, but I would say the staff does not handle large groups as well. We were treated a little rude at the end of our visit regardless of our huge bill and tip. Money isn’t everything but for whatever reason they wanted us out of their only one cocktail in. Bummer, but I will happily support this company by going to loveboat and here on nights of celebrations.

I have been here a couple of times now in the past 2 years. I went again last night and the food was great! In the past, I remember I’ve tried to come here a few times but left because the wait was ridiculously long. I was going to try to put in a reservation last night but it was too late to make reservations for the day of. When we got there I was dreading there was going to be a wait, but there was none! We got sat right away. It’s nice you can make reservations via Unilocal though! Last night we ordered: Robata — bacon wrapped scallops — bacon wrapped asparagus — pork belly Sushi Rolls — Hotty Hotty — Wasabi — Caterpillar Everything from the Robata grill was amazing! I think the pork belly was my favorite! For the rolls, I wasn’t too impressed with the Caterpillar, it’s such a standard roll you usually know what to expect, eel, eel sauce, avo, this one was just not great. But the Hotty Hotty and the Wasabi made up for it! The Wasabi definitely has a good«nostril clearing» kick to it! And the presentation of the Hotty Hotty makes it 100x more appealing, and it’s delicious. A bit pricey here, and I would say it’s a Japanese/American fusion vibe here. Service was good!

THEABSOULUTEWORSTDININGEXPERIENCEEVER!!! If I could give these guys negative 10 stars I would!!! Let me just start this rant off by saying that I looked this place up on Unilocal and it sasy that their hours were open until 11pm on a Saturday night. I also called to make sure the hours were correct they said serving food until 11pm and bar is open until midnight. Great so last night(Saturday) I get off work at 930 my boy friend and I got to the sushi place at 950pm. The hostess was kind of hesitant to seat us and she asked the manager if they were still open. The manager said yes for Sushi but the kitchen had just barley closed… Weird. So we get seated and after 5 minutes of being seated a waitress comes up and says she will take our drink order since our server was on break. Mind you it’s 10pm now. So we order cocktails off the menu, the one I ordered was out because they were out of pineapple juice(2 drinks on the cocktail list called for pineapple juice). We also asked for miso soup which the waitress said she’d see what she could do since the kitchen was closed. 1010pm our waitress shows up she doesn’t even introduce herself she tells me to pick a different drink. We are hungry and ready to order at this point so we get things started. We get some hand rolls and some other things off the menu. The sushi rolls are very Americanized and odd, but fairly decent. So now it’s 1030 and we want to order some more things the waitress tells us to put in everything at this point as its last call. LASTCALL??? We were so confused. So we order more food. It’s now 1039 the waitress comes back and asks if we want more drinks as the bar is closing. We say we are confused as to how late they are open and she says«don’t worry we’ll let you know when it’s time to leave» so we order another drink. The drink comes out as well as our last bit of food all of a sudden in freezing Visibly shaking it’s so cold. All of a sudden the AC Is on, the bar tender is closing, shades go down, and everyone starts putting up chairs. The manager sees we are confused and asks of everything is alright. We confront the closing time and she says they are still open. We also say we are freezing, she stares at us blankly while wearing a winter coat. So my boy friend says just give us the check we are clearly not welcome here. We still had a whole roll to eat and full drinks. The staff was so rude and didn’t even care that we were upset and leaving. If want the worst service of your life this is the place! We were not welcome and we didn’t even stay passed closing. Never never never will I return!

I have had the pleasure of eating here twice, and both times were phenomenal. Our most recent visit in early November was a on a Friday night. Despite being busy, they were still able to seat us quickly, serve us quickly, without making us feel rushed. In addition to incredible sushi and sashimi dishes, they also have amazing cooked meals and oysters on the half shell. Our first visit back in June 2015, the managers and chef helped my now husband/then boyfriend execute a flawless proposal. My husband had no trouble speaking to the manager, explaining how he wanted to propose and the chefs had no issues using our personal«Star Trek Sushi Serving Tray» to pull it all off. It’s no surprise that this place is fantastic. The owners are also responsible for Love Boat Sushi, which we frequent more often but when we want a treat or feel like being fancy, Blue Ocean is absolutely the place to come. (The parking is also very good. A bad parking situation can sometimes make or break a restaurant.)

This place is amazingly good. One of the top sushi spots in North County! I have been here twice now, and both times have been stellar. Glad my friends invited me to this gem of a restaurant. Last time out, the itemized list we had: **Pork Belly Robata: I know it is just fatty pork on a stick, but it is perfectly marinated and cooked, and while it is a little fatty, it is on the super tasty side. The roasted garlic chips and onions is a perfect garnish. If you like pork, you must order this! **Chef Specialty: Delicious roll, had spicy tuna on top with spicy mayo. **Albacore Delight: Tasty, a must try for albacore fans. It was a sweet/spicy chlil sauce on top. **Heart Attack Roll: This is a fried jalapeño with cream cheese and tuna I believe. More like an appetizer, but still tasty. The service has been top notch both times we have been here as well. Very friendly waiters who are cognizant about coming back to make sure that you are taken care of. My friend says you have to make a reservation, otherwise you are relegated to eating at the bar if you are just walking in. Every roll tasted fresh, and is a step above most other places. A little on the«spendy» side, but well worth it for what you are getting. One of my top spots for sushi in North County!

One of the best spots in San Diego/Carlsbad! The freshest sushi with enough variety to satisfy true sushi fanatics. Perfect spot for two or a few people and the drinks are strong and to the point. Try the ginger old fashioned! Five stars for being one of the best sushi joints we’ve tried. We left full and satisfied.

The other day, my husband and I went out for a date — a sashimi date at Robata. Below I share my experience. Robata is a dissapointment in sashimi and sushi — with the exception of their sweet sweet uni(I love their uni). Their amberjack and toro sashimi was awful — one was too chewy(think overcooked octopus) and the other was so fishy(it made me gag). I appreciate that when I shared my bad experience with their sashimi, the restaurant took it away and took it off the bill. That’s good customer service. The uni sashimi was phenomenal. Although, the color was slightly off, the uni was super delicious, creamy, and sweet. Yum. Accepting that Robata is not a sashimi restaurant, we ordered their Hotty Hotty roll. The tempura onions were okay(albeit a bit to oily for my taste). The actual rolls were«meh.» Their ginger is okay and their wasabi is subpar — so subpar that I ordered freshed wasabi. Unfortunately, they brought me chopped wasabi drenched in soy sauce. I’m pretty sure it was slimmy too. To end on a positive note, I must say that it’s possible Robata was simply having a bad night with their food. To their credit, their hot tea and plate composition was good. It looked pretty. Good thing is that I had a good time because my husband is amazing and I love spending time with him!

My boyfriend took me here for my 30th Birthday and I was completely blown away with everything. From the exterior and interior décor to the amazing food. Everything seemed to be on point. We ordered the chilled oysters, salmon nigiri, albacore nigiri, yellowtail nigiri. the albacore delight, the marine boy, and last but certainly not least the blue ocean omakase box. I enjoyed every single thing I ate(so fresh) and had the best experience here. I would definitely come here again, even though it’s a 45MIN. drive from home. Good customer service! The only downside is that the parking lot is a little dark. You can barely see anything when you go outside They might want to look into some light posts just in case.

Tucked away off the main road in Carlsbad you find Robatta. I visited Robatta Sushi for the second time over the weekend for dinner. To be honest I was not very impressed the first time I visited for lunch(mainly bc of my sushi roll order which had avocado that seemed outdated aka brownish), sometimes you have to give place a second change and I’m happy we decided to come back. Needless to say it appears they up their game for dinner as overall we had a great experience. Dining at Robatta on a Saturday night is pretty busy yet we received good service. All of our choices were truly solid– and there were no complaints on any of the food items despite how different the items we ordered were. We started off by ordering the garlic edamame great choice– although warning: it’s pretty spicy as they add some red pepper sauce. We followed with the veggie tempura– it was a good amount of veggies and pretty filling consisting of green beans, carrots, beets and zucchini the two sauces that come with it are delish! Last we had an order of the shrimp skewers which were very tasty an order comes with two skewers which three good size shrimp, the seasoning on the shrimp was very good. The rolls we ordered were all good but I definitely had my favorite. We shared the rainbow spider, spicy tuna and the caterpillar. The caterpillar was definitely the winner with good eel and a great sauce. Although the rolls are not huge, you can taste the quality in the ingredients and every bite is satisfying and enjoyable. Some rolls are reasonably price and others a little higher compared to other sushi restaurants.

Ahh, my favorite so far. Such a great sushi bar. Wish it was closer to me. Love the ambience and the bubble glass hanging from the ceilings. The sushi chefs are awesome. Helpful. The sushi is insane, fresh and magical in the presentation. They go the extra mile to present to you this gift on a plate. The robata menu has lots of small cooked items to choose from. The miso fish was a favorite, so was the live uni. Scallop sashimi sliced ever so thin. They have quite a good selection of sake also. From mid range to expensive and fine. The atmosphere is busy and a little loud. I love the busy feel in there and I’m also a fan at sitting at the sushi bar. We didn’t have to wait for a seat thank God. We did have to park across the street. The lot fills up fast! I can’t wait to go again!

This restaurant definitely deserves 5 stars! I’ve never had better sushi than at this place. I came here around 8pm on a Saturday night. I wasn’t really expecting much from this restaurant other than the typical Japanese sushi dishes, but boy, was my tummy happy! Food: We ordered the Marine Boy, Spicy Tuna, and Tangy Mango sushi. They were so delicious! The presentation was impeccable and they even added this little plant that they topped off in the middle. Each roll had such delicate plating of items on top of the rolls and the sauce was so tasty! I love mangos, so I was very excited to try the tangy mango. It was very soft and juicy. The fish was also very fresh with just perfectly seasoned rice. The only thing was that we had to wait about 20 — 25 minutes for our two rolls to come out, but it was worth the wait. Parking: There is a pretty decently sized parking lot right behind the restaurant. At night, it does get dark since there are no overhead street lamps. Ambiance: It was a little dark, but the ambiance was very intimate and the décor was very inviting. There was interesting furniture and decorations around the restaurant. Also, there was a tv for those who like a little entertainment while waiting for food! I am most definitely coming back again for dinner! :)

Went in here for anniversary dinner, and having heard mixed reviews, I would say we’re fans. We’d return, the prices were typically Sushi-High, not off the charts. We got the BBQ Rib Robata. It was our least favorite item, it was nothing special at all. It was kind of fatty and flavorless. But, everything else was awesome. We got the Hotty Hotty Roll and the Wasabi Roll. Both were fabulous, we also had many beers and a bottle of sake, it was great all around. Service was really great, and the manager treated us to a special cocktail/shot on the house after we chatted him up too. Loved the atmosphere and the vibe, we will be back.
