Two stars may be a little harsh but I can’t say this was A-OK bbq, either. I had a brisket and rib plate with pinto beans and cole slaw as my sides. The pinto beans were pretty basic but there was something about them that I liked, no additional seasonings or spices, just a robust pinto bean flavor. Nice. And the cole slaw appeared to be homemade, crunchy with a creamy dressing that had just a hint of sweetness. The meat, however, was a mixed bag. The brisket was tender and not dry, and you could fold it without breaking. And the ribs were also tender and juicy. However, and this is a problem I have with just about all East Texas BBQ, there was a lack of smoke and rub flavor, and very little bark or smoke ring. Backwoods says their meat is hickory smoked, which is supposed to give a strong, smoky flavor to meat. But I just did not get that here. The only flavor added to the meat was that from the thick, sweet sauce(which is a bit much for me). Overall, nice and friendly staff, good sides(at least what I had), but as far as smoked meat goes, somewhat lacking.

A lil hole in the wall. I had a pulled pork sandwich and hubs had a sausage sandwich. Both were good, but we both would have preferred they have a lil more smokehouse flavor. On the other hand, the okra was perfect! Cooked crisp and yummy w/perfect seasoning. A good lil stop after some shopping at Trade Days.

Love this place. It’s a little hole in the wall with great barbecue and good size portions. I highly recommend it! They have great loaded baked potatoes, beef barbecue, ribs, and cole slaw and lots of other stuff. They have the best sweet tea!

Beef was moist, but not flavorful. Sides were also bland. The apple cobbler was the best part of the lunch special.

It sure doesn’t look like much, but I don’t care. The BBQ is awesome. Come to think of it, almost all my favorite BBQ joints are hole in the wall!

We came in expecting some great BBQ and service after reading some rave reviews on Unilocal. They have a sign outside that says they close at 7:30 which is thirty minutes sooner than what they have online. We get there at seven. The lady walks outside and immediately flips the open sign grumbling about people coming in late. They are rude when we order and rude to the old folks who walk in behind us. The food was great, but I will not spend my money in a place that doesn’t want my business. UPDATE: I just wanted to point out that we were traveling up to Sulphur Springs and were unfamiliar to the area, so we were depending on Unilocal’s posted hours of operation. I also added an extra star for the manager’s(?) polite reply and apology.

My boyfriend and I found this place using Unilocal. It was highly rated and I can see why! This was good home cookin’! The place was full of regulars on their lunch break. The food was hot and delicious. We both got the lunch special which came with 1 meat, 2 sides, bread, dessert and a drink. Great value for around $ 8. It was a ton of food! You know it’s a home cookin’ type of place when you are asked if you want dessert, not WHAT you want for dessert. Cobbler for all! :) While they are not far from the main road, they are a little bit of a detour… it is well worth the little extra effort to go and check them out!

The family and I stopped in Backwoods and we were sure glad that we did! We actually found it using the Unilocal App. I don’t think there’s anything on the menu that wasn’t great. The staff was really patient and friendly. I think we will make eating at Backwoods BBQ a new family tradition everytime we go to first Monday.

Great food. Too bad it has such a hard to find location. It is worth the trip if you can find it!

The hot links and brisket were flavorful but hot links were not spicy. Brisket was tender. Fried okra was bland. Although it’s old place, it was clean. Baked potato was good. Asked for butter on the side, and was given enough for 8 potatoes. Friendly staff!
