Love the cozy atmosphere, friendly staff & large selection of local drinks. Our go to spot for a mid week bite with their half price burger Wednesday’s. Let’s say I haven’t had a burger I didn’t like. I highly recommend the Burlington burner. Recently we decided to grab dinner on a Friday night and ventured off the burger menu. Delicious! Brussels sprouts are a must. Can’t really go wrong. I started with the French onion soup and a hard cider, followed by their meatloaf special. Make sure you give them a try.

Good enough making me feel like to come back. Really love the smashed potato side! Fish is okay. Like the foods here being not too salty, as many restaurants’ are. But the flavor and cooking way are usual and simple

We came here for the first time and the food was ok, but the service was great. We ordered Calamari as an appetizer and it was ok, it came out really fast which was kind of questionable? My wife ordered a hamburger which was good and I ordered the NY stake which was good and the prices are reasonable.

Stumbled upon the Scuffer while snooping around for a quick bite in Burlington before a movie. Turned out that this spot is a pretty solid place for pub-esque food at a decent price. I got the chili, some wings, and the Shed Mountain Ale(which, after tasting here, is quickly becoming a favorite beer of mine). The food came out quickly, which was good, but the wings were underwhelming. Bland, dry, but hot. If there’s one thing I hate at a bar, it’s wings that don’t taste good. The chili was pretty solid and spicy — NICE. I like a hot chili, and Scuffer did a good job. 3⁄5 because the staff was really friendly and accommodating, but the food was just«okay.»

It was a delightfully warm August day when my husband and I came hee, so we sat outside. I ordered the black bean burger and was surprised how good it was — not the best I’ve ever had, but still good enough to mention. The overall menu was good-sized with the wide drink selection you’d expect from an ale house. The only reason I didn’t give them a higher rating is because our server was very blah. She was nice enough, but definitely didn’t seem to ant to be there.

This is one of the more reasonably priced restaurants on Church Street. Solid beer selection and a very good burger. I got mine bunless, but hubby had his with bread and enjoyed the roll. They offer typical pub food– mac and cheese, burgers, steaks, salads, sandwiches. The poutine was tasty with black pepper gravy making it somewhat unique– not the best in the area, but certainly worth trying. I can’t speak to any of the other menu items, but I’d definitely go back to try a steak and some French Onion soup. This is a great stop for a burger and a beer or two.

Decent place to eat. Came here when I was in town for a day. The sign outside said«half off appetizers from 4−6pm» so that drew me in. I ordered the maple-habanero wings and the French onion soup. The soup was GREAT. The wings were ok. They weren’t hot at all. Being habanero I figured they would be a little spicy. The ambiance was a little dingy. Not a bad place but I probably would only go back for the ½ off apps.

Excellent place to eat. I travel to Vermont once or twice a year and now I am adding this restaurant to my list of places to eat every time I visit Vermont. Excellent service! Excellent food!

Was in vacation in vermont and decided to come down and try some putine here, boy am I glad I did. As a Florida boy I am used to down home southern gravy on everything, but when I tell you turkey gravy on french fries were perfect. For my meal I had a guacamole cheeseburger that was out of thus world and what tasted like an authentic new england clam chowder. There were big chunks of seafood and it was all amazing

Ate here for dinner with a party of twelve. Food was good, service was good, great beer selection, experience was generally very solid, until we got the bills. Prices were borderline infuriating. Made very little sense. One person got Mac n cheese and paid $ 5 to add chicken, only to find they added a single slice of chicken on top. A good sized burger was $ 10, a good price, and a tiny piece of chicken parm atop a tiny pile of linguini was $ 15. Fully $ 7 for a single slice of cake for dessert. Portions were generally undersized for what I expect from a steakhouse. Everything was good, but I expect way more for the prices.

I wish you could .5 on these reviews cuz Scuffer would get a 4.5! This is the second time we have eaten here for dinner and both times the food was satisfying and delicious. We were in Burlington during a 3 day holiday weekend and had to wait 15 minutes on a Sunday night around 7:30pm but we were able to sit at the bar with a brew. Great selection for local beers at reasonable prices. I had the black bean burger with chipotle mayo($ 1) and mixed greens(good amount!). Tasted fresh and delicious! Boyfriend had the steak after reading it came with bleu cheese butter. He was thoroughly impressed. I’d def come here for the burger deal and load up on all their delicious, beefy options. Especially good place after a long hike/bike to replenish calories.

3.5 stars Scuffers was a nice place to eat a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon in Burlington. My four friends and I were seated in 25 minutes, one of the shorter wait-times we encountered. Friend #1 ordered the steak and frites. According to him, the steak was«pretty good» and les frites were«very good.» I managed to steal some of friend #2’s frites and I can attest to the«very good. Friend #2 ordered a chicken sandwich with frites. He said it was very filling but I noticed the envious glances he shot at Friend #1’s steak. Friends 3 – 4 and I decided to order the $ 10VT Cheddar Mac and Cheese: a good, mild cheese with just enough garlic bread crumbs. Friend #4 thought it was flavorless. The portion was rather large, of course; I’m afraid it’s the source of many of our Canadian neighbors’ heart attacks. The lighting was kind of off. Even though Scuffers is a really dim restaurant, the single bulb above us managed to blind friends 2 and 3. Luckily for me, friend 2 has a large head, forming a nice eclipse and shielding my eyes. I don’t regret my experience at Scuffers… I was hungry and I wanted Mac and Cheese. Will I go back any time soon? Probably not. Plenty of other places in Burly.

Good location. They had Heady Topper so that was a plus. But how hard is it to cook rare tuna?!? I prefer mine a bit more rare but it was yummy none the less.

Great local beer selection, the service was excellent, and the food was delicious. I had the truffle burger with local cheddar cheese, with the cheese sampler for an appetizer. All delicious, all recommended.

I’m here from California on business and I was looking for a steak house. I ordered the Filet medium rare. It took over 30 minutes for my order to be ready. My filet was overcooked — definitely not medium rare and it was dry and tasteless. Very disappointed in the wait time and the quality of food. Definitely will not be returning to this restaurant in my future visits.

This place has come a long way since the old days of the Rusty Scuffer. Quality of food has improved significantly in the last decade, as this place used to be known for its mediocre seafood, and probably the only fried seafood joint on Church St. Since then the menu has shifted its focus to quality meats. The steak frites are good and their burgers are great. The truffle fries are very addictive as well. Other than that, it’s not a Michelin star restaurant, but definitely a great place to meet friends before heading out for a few drinks. Best night — Wednesday for ½ priced burgers

After walking up and down Church Street searching for a Saturday lunch spot with 3 other friends, we settled on this spot. The result was unremarkable food, sluggish service, and a sleepy ambiance. SETTING: The interior is your run of the mill bar/pub with dark masculine interior, a big screen TV(that happened to be showing some strong man or tough mudder competition of some sort). Perhaps it was telling that most other places on Church Street had a wait, and this one was barely half full. SERVICE: A little on the slow side considering how empty the restaurant was, but otherwise nothing much to note. She didn’t really seem keen on going the extra mile to split the check(although she probably would have done it if we asked her to – both parties were too lazy to make the effort). FOOD: I ordered a black bean burger with sweet potato fries, which was whatever. I’m not sure why the patty came out the color it did, but it was deceptively edible. One of my friends ordered a Heady Topper, which is apparently a rare thing(Aside from the occasional Stella, I’m not much of a beer junkie), so that was kind of cool. Other than that, no real highlights from the food. All in all, an experience invoking little emotions. I probably wouldn’t return on my own volition…

It’s been about a year since my husband and I traveled to Burlington for a wedding. We were enjoying our own self-proclaimed bar crawl on Church St. stopping in for drinks at as many bars and restaurants as we could. The Scuffer Steak and Ale was one of our last stops, and since we’d already eaten dinner a couple hours beforehand, we both decided to get bowls of clam chowder. I still think fondly and dream of this clam chowder. It is the clam chowder against which I judge all other clam chowders. And I am always disappointed. Hands-down, the BEST clam chowder I have ever had the privilege of devouring. It was so clammy, creamy, rich, and well-seasoned. It was somehow more savory than other clam chowders I’ve had, and everything about it makes me sad that I’m not in Burlington right now. It didn’t hurt that our waiter was probably one of the best servers my husband and I can recall in our vast dining-out history. We also enjoyed the restaurant’s effortless charm. It was a comfortable, classy place to have a drink or a meal(or both). Or just the clam chowder. If ever we find ourselves in Vermont in the future, Scuffer Steak and Ale will be our first stop.

The menu is well rounded and perfectly situated in the heart of Church Street. As far as the service, our drink order took far too long to reach our table, and one of the drinks served had sour milk!!! But overall, our server was very attentive and friendly throughout. My veggie burger was heavy on the black bean ingredient, so it was a bit potent. If they added a beet mixture to the patty, it would of been a more flavorful recipe. My sister in law ordered the Mac-n-cheese and was a bit unsure of the cheese flavoring vs the actual noodles. A little heavy on the cream. The other entrees were a hit at the table such as the burgers and the fresh turkey on the sandwiches. A good option for brunch or lunch, especially if you can get a table outside in the sunshine!

A friend and I were in Burlington for the day, and we don’t know the area at all. It was rainy and very cold for July. We ambled up the street, just looking for food and a place to sit. «How about that place we just passed?» «Sure, let’s do it.» We went in and sat in Scuffer’s. The interior is very nice and, I imagine, very Vermonty. Wood everywhere, windows that open on the streets, an easygoing vibe. The menu looked fantastic and we had a hard time choosing our items. The prices were also very affordable– but then, we just came down from Canada, where we paid $ 23 for one meal at an Ihop in Niagara, so food for one for under $ 15 was practically unheard of at that point in our trip. My friend got… I forget, some burger or other, and I got the clam chowder with an onion rings appetizer. When the food came, both our eyes went wide and we whipped out our phones to take photos. It looked amazing. We tasted and began moaning. It was everything we didn’t know we wanted. The clam chowder was delicious, if a bit heavy with the bacon. I greedily got every drop out of that bowl. The onion rings were likewise the good stuff, and my friend loved his burger. I even ate the pickle off his plate, and wound up saying«wow, this is a good pickle.» While we were sitting there, utterly stuffed and groaning about how our random restaurant choice was a great one, someone nearby got a fish dish and it smelled unbelievably good. I wanted to scoop my guts out into a bowl just so I could eat again. So, yeah, Scuffer made two fans that day. Sadly I’m not local(I live four hours away) or I’d be back soon with more people.
