YES I’M A FAN! This restaurant is my Caribbean«Cheers» you know the slogan to the tv show«Everyone knows your name»… LOL! I quite frequently go here because the staff is very friendly. The drinks are really good that a $ 20 tab can and will get you buzzed… And the food is as good as my Mother’s home cooking… I honestly don’t go there to sit down and dine. I’m more of a bar wench so I chill by the bar and I drink and chat with other locals. Its a hangout spot so please do not go there on a romantic date or family dinner. Its not at all that type of place. However it is my type of place… that is why I go there to relax and chill and get way from my husband and child. LOL! Check it out if that’s the kind of spot your looking for…

I had the sugar cane shrimp with macaroni pie. Others had barbecue jerk salmon with yellow rice with a garnish of fried plantain or spinach soufflé. The gourmet style portions bring you back to your childhood in the Caribbean. And, the sorrel martinis are so good. A must have for your Caribbean palate. yum!!!

NOW I’ve been here several times so why the 2 stars? Well its for service. I am a stickler for great service. It carries any establishment a long way. The guy with the dreads from Trinidad is a mess, nasty attitude and he actually sucks his teeth when you ask him a question. He forgot to bring the drink to my table and 30 minutes went by. The second time my best friend and I went someone left $ 100.00 at the Bar for our food and we were told not to worry about our orders. The same guy happened to be our sever and our meal and drinks came up to $ 60.00 and he asked us to close the tab and start a new one. He wanted us to believe our food charges ate up all the money. All he had to say was he wanted a $ 40.00 tip and BRUH you could’ve had that. Last week we went back and got stuck in his section and he disappeared looking at women who DONT pay him any mind. But anyway when you get there you can’t really pick your seats so when you do finally get a seat your stuck looking at this fool. The food gets 5 stars… The cook… yeah he is a real Trini or he stole someones cook book. The portions are large, the curry is slamming, the potato salad is always good. The drinks are on point, not strong but ok. I had oxtails recently to try something new and to my surprise it was very good. Minimal fat and the gravy was well seasoned. I sampled the rasta pasta and it tasted good. but no one beats Foot Prints when it comes to rasta pasta. The crowd, well its a good crowd. Nice looking men and women… The noise level is off the chain. Don’t try to talk.

This place was definitely not for me. You don’t know if this place is a restaurant or lounge. The music is so loud you have to literally yell at the person your having dinner with. Me and my friend ordered 2 entrees and 2 drinks. I ordered the dhalpourie Roti chicken with a strawberry daiquiri the food wasn’t to my liking at all. This is not the first time I have had this, but I always had it home made by a friends mom so I can see why I didn’t like it. I really was excited about this place and looking forward to coming back but I don’t see that happening ever. My friend had the jambalasi shrimp with macaroni pie and fried plantains with a mojito. I tried both her shrimps and macaroni pie both was good. Overall this place wasn’t fitting for me at all it was very small and tight. It was so tight it felt like I was having dinner with the table next to me and so loud that our waiter couldn’t hear our order. Location 5 stars Establishment 1 stars Food 2 stars Drinks 4 stars Cleanness 3 stars

So last night I had plans to go to the Bad Boy reunion concert at the Barclay center. My friends and I decided to get dinner and drinks before the show. Sugarcane is conveniently located a few blocks away from Barclay and the LIRR Atlantic terminal Brooklyn station. We had reservations for 6pm but was running a little late. The restaurant was packed(mostly because many of the people there also has plans to attend the concert). With that said I was a little worried because we were running a little late and was afraid they would bump our reservations. Luckily the woman was really nice about it and told us that they give a 15 min window. Once we arrived(exactly 15 mins late lol) she sat us down right away! The vibe in there is so chill. The have music playing which is loud but not too loud where you need to shout across the table. They played mostly Caribbean/African music– loved it! The restaurant is pretty small and the décor is really trendy. Our waiter was great but the drinks and food was even better! For my drink I ordered the sorrel margarita… Sweet drink but really good. As for my main course I ordered the jerk salmon, rice and peas and macaroni pie– I also had some of my sisters cabbage and everything was delicious. We all agreed that we would be back next time we’re in the area.

This is a ok Caribbean Restaurant close to downtown Brooklyn, its very small. It wasn’t my first night coming here. We came here at 9pm but had to wait for a table for 30 mins so sat at the bar ordering drinks… paid. then got the table order… the food came really quick N tasted good. Even tho i ordered a sorrel n didnt get it. We got a bottle moet, cuz it was a Birthday celebration. When we was done paying the waiter said it’s a 2 hours seating N that other people was waiting for the seat. He did that after they got they payment but we was still drinking which we ordered drinks 5 mins ago N wasn’t half way done as yet. Beside even if we got up the bar was over crowded so no where to drink our drinks! where u want us stand outside. Smh ridiculous. Also don’t sit directly In front of bar, when the place gets crowded people tends to bump into ya chair alottt. Sit in the back if u have to choose. Heads up Try to get there early on weekends it gets crowded, eat ya food fast like u ordering take out apparently it’s a 2 hours maximum seating time on Saturday N whatever else days. Smh. 0 point. You have to rush eat N leave 1point. place to small 4 point. Good music 3 point. Service not so bad

My friends and I had just finished roaming the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens near by. We were in the mood for real good Caribbean food and Sugarcane was recommended by its great reviews so we decided to give it a try. When we walked in they were very accommodating considering there was a wait. The music was really good and the place had a fun vibe to it. We ordered the appetizer sampler. My main dish was the jerk chicken. It was delish! Not to mention the portion sizes are very generous. When we ordered desert to share, we chose the carrot cake. It came with rum raisin ice cream. No joke… Best ice cream I ever had!!! I’m still thinking about it! The staff was very nice and friendly. I’ll definitely be back.

Literally My Favorite Spot In Brooklyn. People tend to complain about the small space but the vibes in here is unlimited and the food is AMAZING. They also have delicious drinks and drink specials from Tuesday to Thursday. I make it my business to go here at least once a week lol. Oh and the staff is amazing as well I love them all :)

Once again I’m very dissapointed with this place. They have turned me off for good. Went there last night with my bf 4÷23÷16 Sat. We arrived @ a li“l before 7 and was told 1hrhalf wait. Some ppl left so we sat ourselves in the corner near the bar; space was tight but we were happy to be sitting. After 10 min of waiting no waiter came to us, we had to get the attention of the guy helping the hostess. He couldn’t find a waiter so he took our order. Shortly after the hostess called us but we stayed in our spot. 30 min, which seemed like forever we waited for our food which, during that time no waiter cane to check on us or to even acknowledge that we’re there waiting so long. No one came to give us an update on our food wait time. NOTHING! Finally we got up and left, I don’t even think they noticed because, as always the hostess was not at her station. These employees need more training on Customer service and more orgnaization. But I guess the owner/manager doesn’t care because he’s still getting business. My second bad experience here, nothing can make me go back there ever again. I like the food and the ambiance, I usually go for the Rasta Pasta but, mangoseed’s is just as good with better service. They need to follow Suede’s and Mangoseed’s example of caring for their customers.

Sugarcane has a great selection of food prepared with delicious seasonings! I eat the curried salmon with mashed potatoes and Macaroni and cheese. I am smacking my lips just thinking about it now… Sugarcane is in a great area(downtown Brooklyn) and is in a cute quaint space. They play really good music and I enjoy the happy hour as they have cocktails such as mango margaritas!

Hands down some of the best Caribbean food I’ve experienced in NYC. They do not take any reservations which may result in a little wait time. But the food and drinks were definitely worth it. I ordered a Creole Whole Snapper(pan fried with sautéed onions, garlic, tomatoes, white wine and Carole butter). Each entrée comes with two sides and they also have a great variety to select from. I decided to get the macaroni pie and the mashed potatoes.

If you like jerk chicken, strong drinks, and loud music this place is for you. I’ve been to Sugarcane several times and have enjoyed myself every time. I find it incredibly interesting how people will line up outside for happy hour before the place even opens. But when it opens at 5 or 5:30 people rush the bar to take advantage of the happy hour specials. As already mentioned the drinks are strong. I recommend the rum punch it will literally transport you to a Caribbean island. I’ve also seen a lot of people here ordering the daiquiris and mojitos. The food is decent. I feel like it definitely depends on who is in the kitchen because once I had some pretty good jerk chicken wings but on another day the jerk sauce was so spicy it almost lit my mouth on fire. My boyfriend really likes the ox tails from here. Once again the place gets crowded especially on the weekends it’s like a sardine can. But worth it if you’re looking for an island experience.

Sooo I finally made it to Sugarcane. I don’t know why I’ve never stopped by this place when I live so close. The food here is soooo good! The ambiance is great! I love the lighting, it sets the perfect mood. My group was seated right away when we arrived(I’m guessing because it isn’t as busy on a weekday as it is on a weekend). & the service was great. Our server Jamila was really nice & acknowledged the fact that it’s my mother’s birthday even tho we didn’t order dessert. I thought that was a very nice gesture because she didn’t have to do that. Anyway, I had the West Indian Fried Chicken w| Macaroni Pie & Garlic Mashed Potatoes & it was delishhhh ! The chicken was cooked to perfection and it was glazed with honey & lime(Sooo good). My portion was also very filling. I couldn’t even finish it but it was so good that I had to pack my leftovers and bring it home. I also order some Jerk Wings to go & that is also delish ! Now the drinks. Let’s just say I’m a lil tipsy writing this review. They are strong hunnyy ! I had the«Jumbie»(Sorrel & Hennessy) & I also had the Sorrel Mojito. Both drinks were just Yummy ! I’ll definitely return to Sugarcane. Being that I’m Trinidadian this has easily become one of my new favorite restaurants !

Went here for a friend’s birthday dinner. Sugarcane has a very nice quaint scene and a bar filled with people, even on weeknights. The bar has seating for dinner if you prefer, along with televisions, nice tropical drinks, and really good Caribbean food. The background music alternates between hip-hop and calypso, so it really sets the tone for this island-spirited restaurant with an urban flair. There are stalks of tropical red flowers and black-and-white photography from regions that inspired the cooking which add sophisticated style to the place. The staff may come off as soft-spoken, but they’re always happy to answer any questions. The vibrant menu begs diners to try something new. Sure, they’ve got great jerk chicken, but be adventurous and order a filet of shark sandwich, oxtail, West Indian curry, or Trinidadian stewed chicken with rum and Spanish thyme. Each artistically presented entrée comes with two sides, so branch out with a delicious bowl of Callaloo(a spicy green vegetable purée). This spot is lovable because it’s what not what you would expect, and it makes for a great dining experience.

I hadn’t been to Sugarcane in years and when a girlfriend suggested it, I was too excited. I arrived at 5 and there was a line outside. The patrons alerted me that there was a training going on so we’d have to wait a couple minutes to be let in. That was fine because my friend hadn’t arrived. When the doors opened I grabbed seats at the bar. Within 10 minutes the place was packed. We ordered our drink. They had Ciroc Apple specials but I asked the bar tender to give mine an extra mix because I am a not a huge apple fan. The 1st drink was nice but way too sweet. I ordered the fish tacos and even though I am not a fan of fish taco they were fairly decent but nothing I would order again. We had another round and this time I asked him to give me a mix but with more of a kick. Boy did he. This one came with instructions from the bar tender with locs not to drive home. Luckily it was an lirr night for me so I was safe. We had a great time. The crowd was cool and so was the vibe. As always I warn partons, if elbow to elbow is a pet peeve for you then this place won’t work. Go for the vibe, food and good prices. The menu has changed so check it out before you go. They used to have a sampler with wings, mac and cheese and cod fish fritters etc and I didn’t see that anymore. Bummer becUae it was a good appetizer sampler while you had your drinks.

Ah Sugarcane, a very small Caribbean restaurant in Prospect Heights. I’ve heard one too many raves about this place, so a friend and I decided to conjure up plans for Halloween but due to having so many things to do on Halloween, I decided why not go out on Friday. As we walked into Sugarcane, I noticed how small the place was and how LOUD(I understand I’m speaking in Hyperbole) this restaurant was. I’m not a big fan of loud restaurants like that. I was quite perturbed by how loud it was, it was almost unnecessary for the music to be playing at that level in such a tiny establishment. My friend and I were told by the hostess that we have to wait thirty minutes for a table. We were handed a card with the number to the restaurant. During this time, we walked to Burrito Bar and had a drink. When I called the hostess back, a man picked up and didn’t have a clue what I was speaking about. When the hostess was given the phone, she told us our table was ready and this was around 9:45 pm. As we arrived back to Sugarcane, the table wasn’t ready yet and we had to wait another five minutes to sit down. I forgot to mention, prior to leaving the establishment during our wait time, my friend purchased the sorrel Margarita and it was very good I might add. I had to share a drink with her because it was very difficult for me to order my own drink since the bar area was very crowded. Initially, I wanted to order the Sugarcane Rum Punch, but they were all out! I will say again, think twice before coming here on a weekend night. The bar area is very crowded and you have nowhere to order, sit or stand. You have to beg for a menu for drinks because the bartenders and waiters/waitresses are attending to everyone else besides you. As we sat down at our table, finally, we were not given a menu to order from. My friend and I were talking to each other. I could barely hear her because as I stated previously, the music is veru, very loud and we were seated next to the DJ. I had to ask her questions over and over again. It was frustrating. We look down at the table and we had no menu. We asked a random waiter walking by for our menu and when our suggested waiter came to us, he was confused and decided to bring two of them to us. He asked us what we wanted to drink and eat. I ordered the Heritage Stew Chicken with macaroni pie and fried plantains. I also ordered the Passion fruit Colada drink. My friend ordered the Sugarcane shrimp and ordered a Coconut daiquiri. Another waiter brought us two glasses of water. I did eat prior to arriving at Sugarcane, so although I did not want to eat, I decided to try the food and I regret wasting my money! My friend’s dish cane with fried plantains. I’m pretty good on reading food. I’m able to tell if the meat is fresh, if the chicken was properly cleaned, if the seasonings were perfectly executed and if the food is overall old. The shrimp was clearly over sautéed. The rum sauce that it came with was pretty good, but I don’t think it was worth $ 16. I did not try the plantains until I had my own dish. My dish, the Heritage Stew Chicken was very salty. There was no gravy to accompany the chicken. The fried plantains were over ripe. I can tell when fried plantains are under ripe, just ripe enough and when they’re over ripe. They were clearly black before cooked because it wasn’t very yellow anymore, it was almost brownish gray. I also know that the heat used to fry the plantain was very high because the inside was not fully cooked. My other side was the Macaroni pie. It tasted like it was cooked with Kraft’s American cheese slices and some cheddar cheese. It wasn’t cheesy, it was kind of… blah. The chicken was tender but it was too salty and it wasn’t cleaned properly. The thigh had that small, black bulbish part inside of it, which I hate. I love Caribbean good but this restaurant’s food was not that great and my dish cost $ 18. I asked for a doggy bag because I could not finish the food nor did I want to waste it. The waiter brings me a container and a brown paper bag. I had to put my food inside of my own doggy bag myself. I’ve never had to do that before and I tipped this man 20%. I’m partial to black waiters, because I know they have to grovel for tips many times but I honestly believed even though I tipped him, he did not deserve it. To our drinks, this is probably why I’m giving this establishment three stars. The drinks are better than the food. My Passion fruit Colada was amazing. It was very delicious. This was the best part of dinner last night. My friend had a sip of mine and loved it. Her Coconut daiquiri was very, very good as well. This is what saved them because if this restaurant don’t serve alcohol, I wouldn’t come back but the drinks were honestly very good. That’s all I would recommend to someone else. I would only come back here for the drinks. That’s the best part of Sugarcane.

I really wanted to love this place so bad. I came here on a Friday night and damn this place was bumping. I’m talking about loud dancehall music, attractive waitstaff and a 30 minute wait to be seated. My date and I obliged since we were so intrigued by the nightclub/lounge vibe this restaurant gave off. We went straight to the bar to make the wait less painful. There was a live DJ in the actual restaurant and he was so dope and talented. The bartender who made our drinks messed up how much change she gave me(she gave me 9 $ instead of 16 $) but everything was fine. She apologized and made me the most delicious mango daiquiri. My date had a red stripe beer. We were seated almost immediately after getting our drinks and that was when the night went sour. We saw the menu and looked around and the portions looked huge and delicious. We asked the waiter for suggestions and was SO disappointed. We waited about an hour for our entrees and our food was cold and not that tasty. My steak was cold and had too much fat, and my date’s coconut rice was the only highlight of the meal. Honestly it was reminiscent of hospital food. There is SO much potential with this place. They need to work on the issues they have in the kitchen and re-work the menu a bit. They need to simplify the menu to less items and just get it executed right. I can see the potential with the great flavors they had in the rice and how delicious my drink is. I probably will not return.

Wow food was great. I ordered from the specials menu, had the salmon, macaroni pie, callaloo. Oh and the sorrel martini very tasty. Upscale West Indian food that is very much worth it. We were early and only waited a few minutes, it did get crowded very fast and the line was long shorty after we were seated. I’m an all American guy and my Girlfriend is from Trinidad, her family living in NY took her and I to Sugarcane. They really like this place as it has the flavors of Home for them.
