Steak ‘n Shake

This location is poorly staffed. It is the closest location to my house so we go there often. I always have a great experience with the food quality but sometimes the time you have to wait is not worth the product. All of that being said… the salted carmel pretzel shake is my all time favorite shake!

I love Steak and Shake. That being said, I will never visit this location again. They were grossly understaffed, and the staff on hand were more interested In chatting with each other than their customers.
When we entered, there were only two occupied tables and a customer at the bar. It took over five minutes to be seated (normally not a bad wait, but the place was almost empty.) After five minutes of being there, we still hadn’t seen our waitress for drink orders. We look over, and she is just chatting with another employee. Don’t read this for a food review. We didn’t stay long enough to order. We walked across the lot to Jimmy John’s instead.

Great place overall. The food is served quickly, the service is excellent, and the interior is nicer than most other locations of this chain.

I don’t typically write reviews for «fast food» type establishments like this, but I felt the need to write one after getting less than sub-​par service. I at first thought it would be a one time thing, but no it has turned into a three time thing and it has led me a conclusion that this Steak N Shake has 1) No quality control 2) Doesn’t train anyone or 3) The workers just don’t care.
On three separate occasions I’ve come here after getting off work, which is around 4:15 — 4:30 and each time the the staff/​workers have jut completely messed up my order. I know it wasn’t a coincidence because I order the exact same thing every time and ALL three times the order was messed up the exact same way.
Apparently this Steak N Shake just lets their cooks make the burgers how they want to make them. I ordered a pepper jack melt, and every time they have given me just the two patties and pepper jack cheese. I guess the cook didn’t get the memo that there was suppose to be grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, etc on the burger.
The first time I thought maybe a new kid, but it happened twice more. And I will never come to this Steak N Shake again.

Waited to be seated, waited a long time for my food which arrived lukewarm to cold. When I told the server, I heard someone at the next, who was listening in to my telling the server, remark to their table mate that their chili had also been cold. Besides bad service and cold food, the place was filled with uncleaned tables. I saw a kitchen manager in back and wondered why he was allowing cold food to be sent out to customers. Rather than lose another half hour of time for nothing, I went to a different place where I had hot food in less than 5 minutes. I don’t plan to return and I advise that you don’t either. If I could give 0 stars here I would.

This used to be one of my favorite places to get a milkshake, but this last time I was disappointed. My chocolate shake tasted «freezer-​burned» and was pretty icy instead of frozenly, thick and smooth.

Honestly, Steak and Shake is one of the more pleasant fast food restaurants I’ve been too.
The food is cheap. The food is (for the most part) really good. I suggest staying with the burgers and shakes, although their chili is probably the best I’ve had in Bloomington. Use their coupons! They distribute them in the mail every two weeks or so.
The sit down service is awesome. The staff at this particular S&S are really nice, even though they’re young and probably inexperienced. They aren’t overly pushy – they usually are good for small chit-​chat (I usually go later in the evening, so it may be different during peak hours).
At this location, I have yet to have a bad meal. The management seems to really have control of the restaurant and it is running all-​cylinders! If you ask me, go for the Steak and Shake meal, burger with everything, chili deluxe (with onions and cheese), fries, and any flavor of Shake – with the coupon, it comes out to ~8 bux. Seriously, McDonalds for that much food would be more expensive and it would taste so much worse.
Oh – and the best part about this location. 24 hours. It’s a really fun place to go from 12−2am!
